The Roland AE-10 Aerophone's design features a combination of traditional saxophone fingering and flexible onboard tones, enabling the instrument to perform in a variety of musical styles. This versatile instrument is suitable for professional and travelling musicians because of its ability to record in the studio and on stage. Players may recognise the familiar saxophone fingering system, responsive SuperNATURAL sounds, and breath sensor that performs just like their favoured acoustic horn. The AE-10 comes with built in speakers, battery power capability, and DAW connectivity. The large sound selection enables players to recreate saxophone models from soprano to baritone, as well as wind instruments like clarinet and trumpet, string instruments, and even synths.

it'd be rad if this had a midi out so that it was compatible with the roland boutique synth modules. that'd be next level.

I agree, apart from the "next level" bit - it should have had one built in, like every other half decent MIDI wind controller, even the Casio DH-100. I hope someone at Roland finally sees sense, and adds one to the next model - if there ever is a next model.

First: I come from Germany and I hope, my english ist understandable...-:) Since one week I own a AE-10 and after my first tests, I have 2 questions: 1. When I play fast staccato themes, in example "Yakety Sax", some tones get lost - any tipp(s), how I can optimize this? 2. I also own a Roland JV-80 and it would be great, if I could use the sounds WITHOUT a DAW. For this I would need an adapter from usb-midi to "normal" midi - are there experiences, what could be used? Tx for your reply, greets, Uwe

I'm confused. Do you still need a tone generator for the instrument to work? Like the Yamaha wx5 or EWI 5000?

Does the instrument have a computer application to configure the instrument and then back it up if you prefer to do it on a large screen instead of the little built in LCD screen ? If there is not, there should be.

I read there were 40 presets and 100 user memory patches. Can you actually edit the synth sounds themselves or can you only edit e.g. the effects mix, transposition, instrument layers etc? Is there an option to edit the sounds with a computer?

Hello there, We can confirm that you are unable to edit the actual the sounds themselves. However you are able to save Transpose, Octave, Reverb, Chorus, MFX1&2, Bite, Bend, controller settings and hold. All other settings are global. Hi Tony, The instrument is very responsive to the players articulation but it wouldn't be completely necessary to learn embouchure in its entirety to generate noises.

The wind sounds were good, the violin and strings sounded weird. But no midi, only USB? So you can't use modules like rolands own integra or sound canvas that may have better sounds?

Farty Pants There are devices that convert usb midi to DIN midi without a pc (check out Mode Machines). Maybe this is a solution.

Apparently, yes, but it appears to be settable per voice / patch, not set globally - and it's not clear what the limits of transposition are from the Quick Start video on the subject - i.e. how far each way, and whether it's every possible key, or just certain ones. As far as I can tell, there isn't a proper manual yet.

jameskings I understand your question because a sax is a "transposed" instrument ( c on the sheet music for sax is not really c) this is weird for musicians who are used to play other instruments. According to the roland website there is a transpos. function.vbut is indeed not very clear how far this function goes.

Hello Mark, Alistair uses Mainstage on a Mac as the front end for his external sounds. In this video he uses the ES2 synth from Mainstage and the sample trumpet is from the Sample Modelling company. We hope this helps. Kind regards, Gear4music

Okay, so it turns out that "more information" comes down to this one line: " USB COMPUTER Port: Supports USB MIDI " That's not necessarily the same as having MIDI Out. That's MIDI to a computer, over USB, but not normally to an external sound module. Can you demonstrate this connected to a hardware MIDI sound module, with a 5 pin DIN connector as the input?

There's a big difference between USB MIDI and an actual MIIDI output. USB MIDI allows you to connect a MIDI controller to a PC or Mac, with all the unreliability, extra latency and lack of future proofing that comes with that - i.e. you'll get it working with your current operating system, but when you want to upgrade that, it will most likely stop working. There are, apparently, dedicated devices that can convert USB MIDI to actual MIDI. They are not cheap, and there is literally no way that can work without extra latency. The parts needed to have put an actual 5 pin DIN output on this thing cost less than a cup of coffee. If they'd done that, it could be connected to any MIDI synth module ever made, without adding latency, without relying on buggy software that will only work for a while before OS upgrades make it useless, and more people would have bought one. Me included.

I can't see your comment on the list, "The Pixel Polygon", but possibly not the sort of adapter you're thinking of. A normal, and inexpensive USB MIDI adapter allows you to connect something with actual 5 pin DIN MIDI (which the Roland AE-10 lacks) to a PC, via USB. There is, apparently, a Kenton product that could do this job but a) it is not cheap and b) it can't possibly work without adding latency since it has to receive MIDI messages over USB, then send out new ones over serial MIDI Out. I can't stress this enough; whoever it was at Roland who decided an expensive MIDI wind controller doesn't need a MIDI out, you are an idiot. I've given this some serious thought. I haven't rushed into that conclusion. Perhaps if I sent Roland a hapeth of tar, a 5 pin DIN socket, and maybe a resistor or two, they could figure out how to attach one for me?

Looks very 'plastic' to me... I assume your head almost explodes when you try to blow on it, just like an EWI... Again, for the 'better' sounds, it seems you need a laptop, which means that at if using it for a gig, a wireless MIDI interface is needed.

"Just like an EWI..." This is an EWI. EWI is shorthand for Electronic Wind Controller. Don't let the omission of EWI in its description fool you. It's probably a very decent one, but it's still an EWI whatever they call it. And, I play a Yamaha WX-5, and no, my head doesn't almost explode when I blow on it. After playing the WX-5 for a few years I picked up a clarinet for the first time in 20 years and it was much, much harder to play loud without feeling the pressure than the EWI was. I would imaging this new one is comparable.

I'm actually frightened by this. It'll eliminate the need for analog instrumentalists, furthermore, those analog instrumentalists, who aren't as fortunate as me to be a sax player, will not be able to simply take up this new instrument and play unconsciously.

I wouldn't be. Nothing beats the real thing. I mean come on, just listen to it! It sounds super corny. I have yet to hear a proper sounding synthetic sax. The muted trumpet on this thing sounds better than the sax. Still going to pick one up though for practicing at night. I like the fact that it has the same fingering as an actual horn and it can be played with headphones.
