Roland E-X10 Costco Keyboard - Unboxing & Sound Test

The Roland E-X10 retails for just under $200 at Costco. I recently had a chance to unbox and do a quick sound test of this model. The keyboard teacher at my Dad’s music school required an additional keyboard and this was the model we purchased.
It has “touch key” function for volume dynamics, several built-in sounds and beats too. It’s an excellent option for gigging, due to it’s light weight, and it conveniently takes AA batteries, as opposed to the heavy D batteries in portable keyboards of years past. It can be plugged into a PA system or external amp, and one can use headphones for silent listening when playing. The lack of an included “gig bag” is one downside-especially considering the marketing of it as a gig instrument-so I’ve linked the corresponding bag below.

Thanks, Tate! Yes indeed, this has a decent sound and fairly good touch sensitivity for the price. I initially went through and tested out a lot more of the sound effects, but cut out that portion because it was a bit boring and I should have filmed that part from behind so the viewer could see the options. Hoping to relearn a piano piece soon and potentially post a video.

Thanks, Wolf! I agree, at this price point, it's a good buy. A lot of cheap keyboards sound like tin, but this one doesn't. Hoping to get a piano piece up before the end of the year too.

Man Id love to see a reboot of y2k by sarcastic future! For all Josh's new fans out there, sarcastic future was a band Josh formed when we were probably 15 or 16! He performed in front of around 500 people and the track was called y2k. He did vocals and keys. Good memories seeing you with a keyboard again 😊. I hope you and your mom are enjoying the new spot 🤘

Thanks, Conrad! I still have the audio recording. Somewhere. on an 8mm tape, I have "Black Mage" from 2003 too, but that might have been lost to time. It's possible it's still up in Maine hidden away somewhere.

In fact my friend Vinny and I used to talk about how we felt like Josh was some kind of genius. Great question, JK! The piano sounds were good quality and quite bright. The organ sounds were OK, but Yamaha has better organ sounds. I'll have to try out some of the alternative sounds the next time I go into the office (where it is now) so I'll get back to you on those later this week. Was there a specific sound which you were interested in knowing about?

Thanks for watching Arif! Well, first it depends if you have a Costco membership to get the Roland. Both seem to be the same price and have similar features. I thought the piano effect on the Roland sounded good. I've not tried the Casio, so I can't speak to whether it's a good purchase or not. Next time I swing by Guitar Center I'll try one out, but in the meantime I can say I like the sound and feel of the Roland and feel it's a good value for the price.

Hi Augustin, I know there is a "Dual" function for two or more sounds, but beyond that I'm not sure if anything else can be layered. Perhaps you can consult the manual to find the answer you're looking for, if that's not it. Good luck!

The lcd is very dim. Any where to darken it up?

Great question! It's also one that I had; I didn't see a setting for it, and there was nothing in the manual. I'm assuming Roland skimped on a backlit LCD so it could run on AA batteries. Back in college, I had a Yamaha with a backlit screen, but it took heavy D batteries. I suppose it's a trade off of sorts. Nevertheless, a backlit LCD would facilitate playing in low light conditions, which is so often how musicians find themselves onstage.

Hello i am trying to decide between the roland ex10 and yamaha psr 373, wich one do you think is the best choice?

Thanks for watching! I haven't tried the Yamaha PSR 373, but I am familiar with Yamaha keyboards, as I own two. It would entirely depend on your intended use. If you're looking for a solid keyboard to learn on, both are good options; but the Yamaha is on sale right now, and I myself find the piano tone on a Yamaha quite close to an acoustic piano. If you need to travel with your keyboard, the Roland is a better option because it's lighter. The Yamaha has a backlit LCD screen, which the Roland doesn't, which would make playing in low light easier. Hope this helps.

You're right, I had originally planned on filming the LCD settings as a close up, but I have no other excuse than I was in a rush and plain forgot until I reviewed the footage. Right after this, I had to take the keyboard to the office, so I didn't have ready access to film that part over. I cut out a minute of content I had filmed in the middle where I was going through the settings to compensate for the lack of close up on the screen, because it was admittedly boring without it. The LCD was indeed fairly dim and I'm not sure how to adjust it either. My guess is that it isn't backlit to save battery power. There are a few other demo videos out there that do indeed show the screen I'd encourage you to check out, but no one had unboxed it, so that's the angle I went with for this one.

Unfortunately, I've not seen a way to adjust the LCD display. I'd assume they did not backlight it to save power so that it could run on AA batteries. If you're using this in a well-lit area, you'll be fine; but if you're playing a gig in a darker room, then it could create complications. Hope this helps.

roland should bring out a serious Arrager with 5 gigabytes of sample memory the boat should be metal with a 7 inch screen wear the whole machine from the FA6 as far as processing rhythms is concerned it should be as easy as cork
