Do you need a DAW?
In this video we are going to show you a workaround to play multiple arpeggios on your Fantom. It uses the STEP-LFO to create step changes on Pitch using Curve = 1. In this way as you have 4 partials per tone you can create 4 arpeggios running at the same time per tone. You know that the Fantom can layer up to 16 tones, therefore you can have 4 X 16 = 64 arps at the same time.
It is a trick and it doesn’t have the same functionalities of a normal arpeggio, but it is decent enough to allow you to create movement in your scene and therefore giving the Fantom some of the functionalities that are not there yet using the arpeggio.
The video show you how to enable STEP-LFO, how to set destinations, and how to change the pitch for each step. In this particular example we create a bass that is changing octave up and down with a supersaw arpeggiating over a chord in UP mode.

Thank you! Finally a Fantom tutorial which is in depth and covers more than the usual basic stuff. Most Fantom content is either made for beginners or shows people covering the same old songs over and over again. This is much appreciated, keep it up. Please don't hesitate to name the shortcomings of the Fantom as this makes Roland aware there are people actually using the machine for professional work.

Brillian and Intersting tutorial, many thanks. I can say, by the way, that for the price point it's unacceptable that the Fantom is not supporting multiple arpeggios on its own. Korg Kross has two simultaneous arpeggios on the same combination (performance) and it's half the price of Roland Fantom.

I agree, in a way the Kross is more powerful than the Fantom 0, I think for me Roland lost the plot with the Fantom since the Fantom G… although I do not remember 8 arps in any Roland Keyboard…

Fantastic video. Without a smooth connected sine wave for 16 steps I had no use for this LFO. I also had no use for the Roland arpeggios since I could not compose myself. Now we have an arpeggio we can compose and work with the 4partial tone, overlay another tone for 8 tone arps or just use one partial for an arp and sequence as many zones we wish. One of the most powerful options would be to set up a 3partial tone, two with 16 steps and one with 15 steps, now we have a polyrhythm that will go through 15 measures of different sequences before returning to the first.

Hi a question here does the Step LFO also work with the Supernatural Tones?

Unfortunately Supernatural tones have very limited parameters in the Fantom… it is quite interesting as Roland pushed for Zen Core but some of the best tones are still Supernatural tones… my view is that Zen Core Tones are not that great as modern tones, some of them are worse than older Supernatural tones… I suggested to Roland that the sounds from Zen Core could be made better with multiple layers but the Fantom runs out of Polyphony so quickly…

@@soundformore Du you use FXM and ring mod as a non-harmonic/ noise portion of the sound that doesn't require keytracking? Like in attack or in nontrackable articulations?

Given that with StepLFO1 and 2 it is possible to largely compensate for the lack of a fully programmable and transposable arpeggiator: is there a way to reproduce the note ON at each step of the LFO? I'll explain. With a continuous sound with constant amplitude (volume), setting (for example) 8 consecutive and equal steps, they will sound like 8 equal notes played consecutively. But if I use a sound with falling amplitude, only the first step will seem played, while the others will resemble the repeats of a “Delay”… Is it possible that this doesn't happen? Can I play a piano tone in octaves that all look the same to the StepLFO? (I know there's already an arpeggiator that does it, but it's to simplify the question, because if it can be done, it opens up a sea of possibilities...)

Yes you can but with some limitations; you can set the amp envelope to retrigger by LFO 1… you need to have the right settings on the amp envelope and also on the step LFO. The draw back is on the positioning of the PCM waveform when LFO1 retrigger the amp envelope. I tried it with a piano sample on two partials, it works but loose a bit of velocity when the retrigger starts, but it is “ok”. If you have also step LFO 1 in synch with tempo and key retrigger for LFO 1 it will do what you asked…

Of course you can record patterns in the pattern sequence that are more complex they dont follow the key you push i sssume there's no way around that Its one area the Yamahas kick butt 8 separate arps. User editable and modify existing ones and 10,000 it comes with! Be great if they could do a firmware update to get similar results

1)Pitch Depth: 51, Step: multiples of 6 … up to one octave of change 2)Pitch Depth: 74, Step: multiples of 3 … up to two octaves of change 3)Pitch Depth: 89, Step: multiples of 2 … up to three octaves of change * If OSC Type is not VA, the Pitch Depth setting range is limited to -63-+63, so only “1” above is possible.
