Roland announces the n/zyme Model Expansion for the FANTOM synthesizer series.
n/zyme is a thoroughly modern instrument with an innovative new synth engine. Featuring wavetable oscillators, wave drawing tools, phase and shape modulation, resonant filters, and two powerful step LFOs, n/zyme is a sound designer's dream, an incredible tool for sound exploration, making FANTOM the most powerful hardware synthesizer on earth.
I had the incredible honour to be involved in its development programming some of the factory patches.
This video that I created will give you some hints about the huge possibilities that FANTOM can offer, using multiple instances of the n/zyme engine simultaneously.
Everything you hear in this video was played in real time, no overdubs!
n/zyme is available via a Lifetime Key purchase through Roland Cloud.

It needs 10.000 arpeggios for different instruments like Montage has, so you can play it even as an arranger keyboard or use arpeggio patterns for different instruments in your music production.

And Roland has abandoned ACB, so it is rather unique and higher quality over the emulations they are sticking in the Fantom and Jupiter-X and future Boutiques. ACB is higher quality, but too CPU-needy, and people won't stop bitching about the lack of polyphony on ACB hardware, so a compromise is made.

In my opinion Roland really aced this one. I remember that interview with the President of Roland when the Fantom came out - him postulating that perhaps in the future the Fantom would expand to hold new synthesizer engines. Lately I was wondering if it would ever come to be, and to their credit they did it - and other manufactures have dangled similar hopes that haven't materialized. I am glad they are charging for it - they should be paid for their work and it means if they make money with it they are liable to make more. A hardware synth that you can really install new engines into - this is a now the future synth they held it up to be. Awesome job Roland! And Happy 50th Birthday!

@Ian B1984 I didn't see that at first because they said or meant 3.0 enables the potential for that. The organ expansion was free last time so I didn't read it carefully enough. I literally just ordered the Hydrasynth Deluxe 73-key with Polytouch. These seem similar in nature. Obviously the Fantom touch interface is something the Hydra doesn't have but Hydra has the Poly aftertouch which is almost impossible to acquire. Should be interesting.

Is there an easy way to make the sounds on the computer and then send them to the Phantom? Also if you have Roland Cloud ultimate does that include the model expansion for Phantom are they extra for the hardware?

Sound great. I have a kronos. I think I can replicate these processes with the 9 engines but the fantom seems o be more flexible in implementing the sounds. kudos o Oland. I used o have an xp60 so I am not biased.. Roland makes great workstations.

Pretty impressive update :) the wave drawing looks quite fun. The raw sound doesn't really seem amazing like the Waldorf M or a PPG but I don't think anyone should expect that, seems like it will sound great in the context of a song.

@@Jason75913 Yeah that is true, I personally love the tone of them, even basic unmodulated raw waveforms can sound great from them.. but I get that isn't for everyone and most wavetable synths are designed for heavy modulation which a more transparent base sound can be useful for.

Wavetable synthesis on Roland. Hell yeah, now we're talkin! But I'm hoping they'll be able to still allow us to crossover patches from other model expansions, over to other Zencore hardware. Like, I can't get a patch I created on a JX-8P expansion over to my AX-Edge. Kind of a bummer as a live performer who would need specific sounds to take on a gig. I can imagine what crazy sounds I can achieve with n/zyme, that i'd love to shred on the AX. I hope they make this happen even though I sort of think why they wouldn't.

@@XxChrisxXBedofRazors the closest is to dupe the patch parameters and then fine tune, the parameter ranges and behavior will differ, but will have sufficient overlap, then it is a matter of finding the right waveforms for the oscillators to give you the closest approximation of your JX-8P patch doable, perfection is possible but improbable, but close enough is good enough, especially when venues tend to have mediocre speakers and/or acoustics

That's the expansion I've been waiting for ....the V-Synth. Problem is I have an Jupiter-XM and ccx an only hope they offer the zyme expansion on that. Not holding my breath. Problem with the XM is that it has limited memory, so I may not be able to load my 800, waveform expansions, together with this one if it were to become available on the xm.

@@Synthshop V-synth is a whole separate engine so it will never be an expansion. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope Roland brings out another V-synth type keyboard. Something to allow us to truly make unique sounds with samples.

Just dupe the JD800 presets, the Zen-Core engine has the parameters for that already, as do all the romplers (MC-707, Juno-DS, FA-08, Juno-Di, Juno-G, etc.)

This is great and I would definitely purchase and feed this into my Fantom 8. But Roland Cloud Manager does not work at all for me (giving up on getting it running after two days of Intenet search, uninstall... reinstall... trying every hint I could find on Roland Support, Roland Clan, KVR and so on and so forth). The Roland Cloud Expansion (non-)solution sucks, sorry for the harsh word. No n zyme for me :-((( I would have spent the money without hesitation.

It is a model expansion like the JP-8, Juno-106 and the others. But this is paid since it is a completely brand new synth development process from Roland. Only available for FANTOM atm.

Per avere la nuova Model Exp. si deve per forza pagare ? qual è il modo più conveniente per chi ha il Fantom HW ? COnviene prendere una lifetime key oppure abbonarsi al Roland CLoud ? o ci sono altri modi ? (p.s. io ero iscritto al RolanCLoud ma ora sembra che il mio abbonamento sia statao cancellato.. forse aveva una scadenza) Grazie per l'aiuto che mi potrai dare ! Daniele

Las subscripción de Roland Cloud tiene límite, hay que pagar para renovarlo cada año. No lo necesitas para esto. Ésta expansión si cuesta dinero, es llevar el Fantom más allá de lo que fue diseñado.

I see something inspired by Arturia Pigments, which is very resource-intensive at times. This could allow someone to get similar granular morphing textures from a hardware device, freeing up their computer. I'll give it a go soon.

Korg Modwave and the ASM Hydrasynth can also give you morphing wavetable textures without having to use up CPU on Pigments, and for less money than a Fantom, and with better sound. Unless, of course, you already have a Fantom.

Roland should make a cheaper version that uses the same system, but cuts down the cost of the hardware. They should use the same screen and many of the controls. I personally would cut costs by ditching most the rear I / O. Remove the parameter knobs and have the sliders able to replicate their uses. Remove the keybed and make it a desktop. Possibly remove the analog filter if the cost needs reducing further. On the top left put the slider section, with the screen at the top right. Below these, put two rows of pads like the 707 and below them have the row of drum buttons and one velocity sensitive pad like on the TR model. Have exactly the same sound systems as the keyboard model, but for as close to £1500 as they can. This would then make this a Fantom / higher spec 707 and would hopefully broaden the user base.

Yes. Any compound time signature is available. Beats can have any value between 1-32. Measures can have values of 2,4,8,16.

It is almost like buying a new synth, and it goes in standalone hardware. Show me a comparable wavetable synth for $150-200. Korg's Modwave costs a lot more than that yet a fractuon of this 2019 Fantom, but the Modwave is mono-timbral and isn't part of a bigger instrument.

@@peterkarczewski8200 Roland will continue to support FANTOM in many ways. This specific model is going outside of Roland's traditional synthesis heritage. They also may want to implement it in other Zen-Core products in the future. The $3300+ dollars that people invested will come in other ways. This model is not being covered in that investment. Plus the model currently being just only for FANTOM, Roland has to find a way to continue supporting development of future model banks and synthesis technologies. That way is to charge for the model banks that they make.

They also added in the 3.0 update: 3 new MFX (Phonograph, Exciter, JD-Multi) XY pad for the zoom editor for the mfx Sorted the mfx out into categories Increased the pattern length from 32 to 64 Compound time signatures option. Instead of just 3/4 and 4/4 we can now do 6/8, 32/16, 5/4, 7/8 and even more time signature options that are fully customizable. Extended loop sizes for the sequencer up to 64 TR-REC improvements

You mean Zen-Core? It can't do wavetable scans, n/zyme is a little bit more capable in evolving textures. Not a lot, but just enough to be noticeably different from Zen-Core. Most folks probably won't push either sound engine to its limits, though.

Why? It's a fairly easy to use synth. The touch-screen and physical controls make it very intuitive and easy to manipulate parameters and even dive deep.

@@MrGreekBlade Maybe, but Fantom is too deep to create an app for. Especially with these model expansions, various engines and other updates. Better to duplicate the screen on FANTOM with an external display (iPad, mobile, monitor) rather than making an editor since FANTOM UI is the best on any digital live performance synth right now. Hoping they can do that with the USB ports on the back. Currently they only transmit midi, but hoping they can do more.

I sold mine 6 months ago. I got it when it first came out.... it was a 3 wheeled ferrari. If they add a functional sequencer, an arranger and an audio recorder I'll buy it again. *Oh, and add class compliant USB audio going in and out of those 3 completely unused USB ports round the back. 😶

@@davidknight754 i know that's not how those 3 USB A ports work. I'm saying its how they SHOULD work. As a so called "musical hub" class compliant audio is a huge omission from rolando. It would require the fantom to act as a USB controller, which should be possible as it is a software solution. AKAI did it with my Akai Force, and transformed the force into a truly magnificent DAW in a box. Come on Rolando!

Doubt it. FANTOM has all the JD waveforms in its basic synth engine. No point in making one for FANTOM. The JD expansion in the JP-X takes advantage of all the physical knobs and sliders but on FANTOM you only have the Envelope ADSR, Oscillator, Cutoff and resonance. Still, would be cool to have. Also, they need to make a distinction from their FANTOM and Jupiter line-up, so the Vocal designer and JD expansion are two of them.

@@xp50player True, since they share the same engine as FANTOM. JD-Multi also has come to FANTOM OS but no word about any model expansion. If I'm being honest, after what happened with FANTOM's gaining model expansions and the outrage of JP-X owners, Roland is being careful as to which product gets what expansion. I am still waiting for the JD model for FANTOM despite what I've said.

Looks awesome, especially the price... let's not do this yet. I've never payed for keyboard updates and will never do. This makes the keyboard even more expensive. Looks not that interesting in combination with drums running a different tempo. Use is minimum, although it sounds impressive. Without this, the Roland is good enough. 64 measures for the recorder is already doubling the size...

Updates are always free, expansions that add to a product beyond what it was originally meant to do are rarely free from Roland. They've always done this.

not everyone can be included in "possible consumer" for brief demos (no one ever does this), but the synth engine's parameters and ranges can do that, so you'll have to try it out yourself or wait for a demo catered to you

Korg Modwave is great at this and costs far less paired with wavestate kills fantom...yay

@@beegeorge1727 Wavestate and Modwave are dedicated wavetable synthesis boards. FANTOM runs multiple synthesis engines in comparison to those two. Neither of them 'kill' each other.

It's cool that Roland is following Korg's trendsetting, sort of the opposite from how it used to be. Early in this video, I laughed: Fantom finally sounds a little corgi! That's a good thing, not an insult. This Enzyme (En Zima?) reminds me more of Modwave than Wavestate, tho. With a little Vectorsynth in the motion graphics. In this video, I wish the parts that were effected during the p-mod and s-mod screens, and during the filter and fx motion demo, and during the draw your own oscillator demo, were more prominently mixed. It was easy for me to see what he was doing, but hard to hear the layer that was being effected. Sometimes it seemed like nothing about the sound was being changed while the parameter onscreen was changed dramatically. Maybe I just had a hard time focusing on that layer, for some reason, during those sections of the video. It's okay though - it got the point across to me, and there will be deep dives.

Wavestate isn't wavetables, but Modwave is, Wavestate is a ROMpler, comparable to Zen-Core or the JV-1080(-ish) engine in FA, Juno-DS, Fantom G, Fantom X, etc. It has a sequencing gimmick comparable to the Wavestation, but expanded upon. Modwave is a lot cheaper, though. More Modwave users out there than Fantom users.
