With its massive sound, hands-on ease, and affordable price, the Roland GAIA SH-01 synthesizer delivers high-performance value with old-school charm. This instrument has kicks out huge sound with three virtual analog engines onboard, each with a dedicated oscillator, filter, amplifier, envelope, and LFO. At less than 10 pounds, the GAIA SH-01 is lightweight, compact, and great for musicians on the go. However, the 37-note keyboard is full-size, so performers can play naturally and comfortably.

This would be one of the greatest synths if it were released in a 5 octave version. It is the most fun synth that I have used so far and I have a few. Real playability usability requires 5 octaves. This is my major gripe with Roland always releasing boards with 3 or 4 octaves. Roland, keyboard musicians need 5 octaves minimum. Let’s face it most of us trained on piano and we’re used to 88 keys. This is a big reason why I bought a Yamaha MX88, good sounds and 88 keys, nice GHA keyboard too. Having said all this the Gaia is my go to synth for synthing around, I love it.

Brian, most people using those synths are electronic musicians who, for the most part, are not trained on 88 keys; or keyboard players who have 88 keys and the synth on top, like 80% plus of pro keyboard players live. There is really no need for 5 octaves of sound effects like this IMHO.

I LOVE the Gaia, but I have one serious complaint. Why make such a great board, something so iconic, and give it 3 octaves? I mean, Roland at least go 4 like Yamaha MX49, Behringer's Deepmind 6 or Roland's other great boards like the JD-XA or System 8?
