The #Roland #JD-08 is one of the "Boutique" synths inspired by 1991s JD-800, which brought back an analog style user interface to a digital #synthesizer. In this video, I'm browsing all the patches of bank A. Table of contents:

Some bands / artists I've been following for a long time are (among others) Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, Pet Shop Boys, Archive, A-Ha, Yes, Porcupine Tree, John Mellencamp, Jean-Michel Jarre, Metallica, Peter Gabriel and Perturbator. So my music will kind of sound like those (without ever reaching the greatness of those artists, of course). :-)

Thanks for putting up this helpful index! I still waver sometimes on flipping my JD-08 (especially with the recent uptick in prices for used ones!) but then I hear someone actually playing one and I'm back to keeping it again. 😀

The JD-08 is so cool! But as I'm trying to not hoard gear, it was too similar to my EX5 conceptually ;-) So I sold it.

The JD-08 is a wonderful recreation of the JD-800. Just so weird they didn't include the waveforms from the add-on cards like the strings card. Those things go for stupid money now, and so this could have helped a lot of people out :P

I have a JD-800 I restored, complete with a new keybed. I love it, but it takes up a LOT of space here. If Roland could add a few more of the features to the JD-08, I'd probably be all over it.

Thanks for this video. My JD-08 also had some Sound Patches in Bank B11 thru B35 a few are ok but overall although they are nothing special.

I know some people probably would consider the sounds total cheese but I love them! They remind me of old tv shows’ and ps1 era video games’ soundtracks, very nostalgic and comforting

These sounds are in a lot of video games and "demos" indeed! The synth itself can create a lot more than the presets, so you're not stuck with that 90s flair ;-)

128 Voices (!) Each patch can consist of up to 4 colors. You can use up to 2 patches for each sequencer track. One of them can have delay/reverb/chorus FX. USB carries Midi AND audioinformation. Its small and weighs only 1,3 kg. Together with the roland keys for under 500 buckos. Thats awesome! I just ordered.

Thanks for watching and congrats on your new synth! It's a 90s time machine :-) 128 voices means it can play 128 "oscillators" at once. Depending on the patch, you get a minimum of 32 voice polyphony (and a maximum of 128)

Thanks for a decent video! Just found another overview of the JD-08 factory patches, over 10X the view count of your video and unwatchable as you're listening to the camera mic's pick up the sound from their speakers, rather than a directly captured line level output. Silly question, Does the JD-08 factory patches include some piano sounds, grand piano or so? I know it's a synth.

Yes, it does, but they're 90s dance sounds. You could get a bit more realistic sounding grand pianos with a bit of effort on the filter envelopes and velocity sensitivity, though.

Nice demo. Do those physical sliders revert to saved values when you recall a saved patch? As in, their physical location would be deceptive if it's, say, physically right at the top, but I recall a patch where I saved it at the bottom of it?

Thanks! No, they're not electromechanical. Some synths solve this by changing the sound only once the slider is sitting at the "expected" location as stored in the patch, but the JD-08 doesn't.

Can you create the "Hoover" sound with this at all?.. I cant actually workout how many Oscillators this has. The "Hoover" sound requires 3 all at different octaves - Cheers in advance.

Sure, you should be able to create that. The JD-08 has 4 "oscillators" per voice.

Thanks for watching! when you compare with other synths in that price range - I think this is not the worst price you could come up with. There's a sequencer, a lot of hands-on-controls, a speaker, a battery compartment plus you can use the sequencer buttons as a keyboard. The sequencer is polyphonic, up to 64 steps per pattern... I think the next best thing might be the jd-xi or the op-z, but then again, they're not really comparable.

@@aardiie yes, that doesn’t seem to be their direction currently. They are too busy with Zenology and the Roland Cloud. Roland making a fully analogue hardware polysynth would be something. Never happen.
