Roland Jupiter-Xm Has An Artificial Intelligence Arpeggiator 

Neo Zeed MXD is a great piece of technology and I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of it, but this being digital allows it to do quite a bit more. And besides, the MXD is partially digital too (if you choose to use the third oscillator).

This thing is almost like a groovebox with a synth keyboard, plus the added modeling of old school Roland synths and sound libraries. Plus the design seems slick.

​@@xnflg3074 Oh I don't think there's any doubt that being digital / multitimbral with those sequencing features is anything to sneeze at. But, this isn't using the ACB engine so we aren't even getting their best analog emulation. It has mini keys. No aftertouch. It just seems like a very strange feature blend for the price point. For this price? I'll take a Hydrasynth and have money left over for a groove box. Or, I'd look at any number of real analog synths at that price instead if I was looking for that.

I think people would give it a chance if the price was right. Korg and Behringer are giving Roland a run for their money right now. I'm starting to feel like Roland is coasting on legacy a bit like Moog was just a few years ago.

@@imDezrt the price I hear is high, and coasting on a legacy is silly these days, but dave smith doesn't go much lower either and Moog is still expensive( they have their reasons) I suppose it depends on the quality and amount one is getting, like someone mentioned earlier I saw, should be $500 not $1500, and what could we compare it to of newer big name companies compact style synths of style and price? Too expensive doesn't do much good, reasonable makes more sense, although, setting high prices targets specific audiences too

lance culbreath tell me please is the orchestra patches sound good on it? There are 4,5 k patches as I saw on sound list, but all videos in RU-vid are only about synth sounds on xm. So it’s very interesting for me to hear orchestra on xm.

@@alex_masiuk the Xm has many sampled remakes from the Integra & FA synths, and the orchestral & brass sounds seem decent enough...but the analog models & new zen core sounds are what makes this so amazing. It's almost like the orchestral, brass, solo string, flute & other samples were an afterthought or a gratuitous inclusion.

This is not simply a synth, it is a kind of portable arranger/workstation with an attitude towards improvisation and creativity on the go. You did not answer any question.

I disagree, I think that this is an excellent little synth but this guy playing shouldn't be playing this, instead he would be more suited to a playing a desktop synth because he's more interested in turning and tweeking knobs than playing any keys, put him in front of a real keyboard like the RD Piano 700GX or a JX 8P and he'd be lost :-o

It has a ton of features and sounds - 4 synths and one drum all at once. Like anything it's the guy driving that makes something good or bad assuming the sound of the device is what you like. I've owned a dozen analogue synths, they didn't make me a better musician. What I do like is it is an inspiration tool for song writing.

Temporal Mix Productions Roland manufactures in China too, same for your iphone.

fiftynerds Behringer would have done this 100 times better.

@Divinital Hydrasynth is being praised for being a new and fresh thing in hardware. The Argon 8 I feel deserves just as much praise as does the Minilogue XD and several other new synths. I think this Xm sounds wonderful (when is the last time Roland made a bad sounding synth really? Not one I can think of off the top of my head) but is yet another repackaging of vintage emulations. Which is ironic given the Roland montra of 'we design the future' slogan. Is a great slogan, but the Xm is not innovative enough IMO. More like an Integra 7 or something in a System 1 chassis. It has its place for sure but I personally am not as interested in a jampacked 'does every classic Roland synth in a box' type thing. Or another emulation of a vintage "Ghost" that Roland says they won't chase, yet constantly offer repackaged digital versions of those "Ghosts" every 3 years.

@Divinital lol is all good man, but to be sure I'm no shill. Am a regular person who is a big synth enthusiast. I buy what I like. I don't have sponsorships or deep seeded brand loyalty (except maybe some loyalty for Moog lol) but is not hard to see the ironic nature of what a company like Roland says vs what then actually do. That was the point of my initial comment.

@@fjfrancois yeah, is a bummer. Last really interesting and cool synth they made IMO was the Vsynth.

KARMA complexity is dictated by changing parameters (either individually or by recalling “scenes”). Some parameters can include varying degrees of improvisation or randomization, but it generally does not respond to the complexity of what you’re playing in real-time. It’s very powerful, but I think this is a different beast.

Iain Bryden it’s not expensive.

$1500 is not expensive for what you get here, but still pricy for me.

@@SPAZZOID100 maybe you need to take up a cheaper hobby. There are plenty of bargains on older very powerful kit nowadays and behringer are your best friend.

the point is that this little monster is not only a synth: it is more a portable arranger/workstation which has a lot of possibilities and is really autonomous from any other devices since it can be battery powered and has built in speakers. There is nothing comparable at this time.

@@ShakaCthulu you are right, I will try to make myself clear. I meant: there is nothing comparable as a standalone hardware portable device. Obviously you can do lots of things with an ipad and a keyboard controller but they are two separate devices and not everybody want to mess with ipad software. Besides, ipad, as every Apple products, is strictly subject to planned obscolescence: in 5 years, more or less, your ipad is going to be obsolete and start decreasing performances with every update or simply fall apart in the worst (but not uncommon) case.

@@GreenHoleSun too true, planned obsolescence is ruining the planet. It takes them longer to gimp the iPad Pros but it will happen nonetheless. If I get 5-6 years out of what I paid for my B-stock one I’ll be satisfied.

Brandon, I assume you are from Roland. Thanks for joining the discussion. What is considered AI has changed a lot during the last several decades. Sure HMM is a tool also used by some AI algorithms, but is it actually used here to learn/predict and follow the player’s style like a human would do ? Based on the few demos I have seen of the Xm, it just seems to me that the recently played notes and tempo are used to trigger one of the few pre-cooked patterns. Not unlikely other “intelligent” arrangers we have seen in the past. So, in my opinion this is just a nice algorithm but hardly something anyone would define approaching human intelligence.

a more powerful sound engine and hardware, real portability (decent built in speakers and battery powered), great filters choice, better built quality overall and a decent (not exceptional) display. The hardware is very good but the software is not very friendly and lacks some features. I hope that Roland will release software upgrades in order to implement this little beast...

@@GreenHoleSun Well, no sequencer and no 4 indipendent parts but costs almost 4 times more.

@@omron9498 actually there is a 64 step sequencer while it lacks a real time sequencer like the one of the jdxi. Each scene is composed by 5 parts which can be independent and used to compose a full song. I will repeat myself: the jupiter xm has a software part that is immature and lacks some basic features, but if Roland want to improve it, it can become a real gamechanger...a little portable fantom!

A lot more polyphony and presets which are cross compatible .

I would not recommend it for . those oscillators are stagnant as hell. and its noisy and the filter issues and lack of a data wheel and and and.... but its strange as can be which is why I bought it lol
