Roland Jupiter Xm's hidden Prophet 5 😱

To get that sweet Prophet 5 sounds, you'll want to use the "S" filter to switch to the Sequential filter... but it's not quite there. What's missing is the Prophet 5 oscillators. This video shows you how to get just that 🤘

I was a developer working at Iconic Labs, & we created most of the sound forms used on the Jupitor 8, Juno’s & many other models from the early 80’s. This ‘Prophet 5’ patch u are talking about, is actually a Roland patch called ‘Tight Mars’, & it was actually developed by us, & ‘stolen’ by Electronica Noise, who produced patches for other lessor synth manufacturers! 😉
@alfiedotwtf
@alfiedotwtf 3 года назад
That's pretty cool you were part of synth history... but as for your stealing comment - are you saying @j3po stole your patch, or I (by my random settings after hearing *his* patch) stole from Tight Mars? Because the Prophet 5 preceded the Jupiter 8 by 4 years and has always had a "brassy" flavour, because now I'm starting to wonder who stole from who :)

Very good. The Roland FA keyboards can do this too. PS: I also own the boutique JP-08. I’ve never thought it actually sounds like a Jupiter 8. It’s too dark and slightly gritty. But strangely enough… It can sound a lot like a prophet 5. 😊
@alfiedotwtf

Yeah, and the Integra-7... but there's something about having it (almost) knob-per-function... I've never had a Jupiter so can't comment, but the comparisons done by Ujiie Katsunori sound pretty spot on. Funny though... it's 2020 and you can now buy brand new, a Jupiter, Prophet 5, an Oberheim, a 2600, and a MiniMoog :)

JupX engine really hurt my brain. Looks that the four partials are not oscs, but whole synths. They have diff env and lfos (but for weird reasons sometimes they have same) and i usually am not sure what i just edited when i simply turn lfo rate knob for example. It is driving me crazy...
@curtc6563
@curtc6563 3 года назад
Not to mention in scene settings there are "offset" settings... which is even more confusing. It makes no sense because there is no way a user is that rational to think ahead and decide at the beginning whether he wants to fiddle only a bit on scene level, or heavily on parts. As the example above, sometimes lfo rate is what is called "vib", sometimes rate of the the part, sometimes rate of the partial lfo. Sometimes "not available"... Have you figured this stuff out?
@alfiedotwtf
@alfiedotwtf 3 года назад
@@curtc6563 hehe yeah :( it takes time... once the anger builds up after you've got things sweet and then you press the wrong button and it says "Berlin Night", you want to throw it across the room. But over time you realise exactly what you want to do, quickly plan in your head how to get there, and then it becomes muscle memory! As for "4 partials are not oscillators but whole synths", yeah that's a really good way of describing how it works 1/n
@alfiedotwtf
@alfiedotwtf 3 года назад
At first it just does not make any sense - why the hell would you want 4 whole settings just to get 3 saws for a phat bass, but after a while when you start diving deep, it suddenly clicks and you think wow you can stack this so damn high! Once it clicks, imaging all the possibilities - 1 J8 saw with filter half open, 1 SH-101 saw detuned filter even more closed. You can't get that in *any other synth*, even on the System 8!
@alfiedotwtf
@alfiedotwtf 3 года назад
That was a silly example, but imaging the first partial is an RD piano, but second part is a Juno pad. And this is only on a single part, and you have 3 left for other sounds! Sounds silly, but why would you want that? You can control all these different parts via different MIDI channels! The Jupiter Xm is really 4 synths in one unit, and each "synth" can be itself 4 oscillators playing the same "part". Mind, blown!!
@curtc6563
@curtc6563 3 года назад
@@alfiedotwtf anyone should agree function-wise this is by far the strongest synth ever. It is just that lack of interface design drives people mad. No idea why they choose long list design instead of commonly implemented screen plus knob-accordingly in diff context paradigm. But yeah what you said is true. I am gonna dive deeper and see if i can get over this negative impulse...
@fredmanteghian5913

The user interface on the Jupiter Xm seems to be quit tedious. I don’t know if the full version Jupiter X is much better. Great capabilities but so much menu diving.
@alfiedotwtf
@alfiedotwtf 4 года назад
That video is using the JP-X model's PCM engine, which yeah is tedious, but also deep. The JP-X model also has a VA engine, allowing access to essentially all of it's possible engines in one part. But that's only when you want to deep dive. Otherwise, if you just stick to the Jupiter 8, Juno 106, SH-101, JX8P, and RD, it's straight forward and almost knob-per-function. You'll need to use the function key to access the other oscillators compared to the Jupiter X (I believe there are seperate buttons per oscillator), but it's the same sound engines underneath. I would have gotten the X if I had the money at the time, but I'm pretty happy with the Xm and have zero GAS for the X (you may be in a different position)
@gmannewsom
@gmannewsom 4 года назад
I've had the full Jupiter X for a month or so, what I did to get around this issue was to set the first four scenes in bank 1 to blank init patches for each of the pre-loaded engines (excluding the XV and RD engines which I never really use). I started filling up the rest of the buttons on that side of the synth with my most commonly used patches/scenes so all I have to do to start a new patch or recall an existing one is hit one button that's accessible right from the moment I turn on the keyboard, no menu diving or combination keystrokes required. After setting it up like this pretty much the only time I ever use the menu is to adjust system settings or to save a new patch. I'm sure there's better ways of doing it but this way has worked well for me.

Alfie - I can’t seem to get any proper answer in any forum - so many mixed opinions... Which of the following other Roland synths would you consider being obsolete if one owns a Jx or Jxm? 1) System8 2) JDXA 3) Fantom, or does each of them play a valuable role in a studio? Most seem to hate the JDXA, but I love it... Cheers from Thailand 🇹🇭
@alfiedotwtf

Ha. Without starting a flame war, I'd say the Xm pretty much is an upgrade to the System 8 (yes people will say that the System 8 is more accurate, but I'm fine with close enough). I'm not familiar with the Fantom, but it looks like the Fantom hase SUPERNatural like the Integra-7 which is amazing. As for JDXA, yeah it's nice... but I think the System 8, Xm, and Fantom are beyond it's league. As for System 8 vs JDXA vs Fantom vs Xm vs X? I'd go for the X or the Xm, but that's my needs... if you're a stage performer, maybe a System 8 or Fantom is more suited?

Hi Nicola, sorry I no longer have a Jupiter so can't help you out there (try Reddit or GearSpace). But from memory, each part is one of the numbered buttons, and then you have to hit a button combo together to get to the individual partials 1-4 (or there's also a menu dive where you press Right a lot of times to get to them). The cool thing though with the Jupiter/Juno X is that you can also select partials together so that settings are changed at the same time.

Intro brass sounds extremely clinical. Notice when you hold down the keys - there is no subtle harmonic intermingling and harmonic movement that a Prophet would have. If you play a prophet 5 it stirs the soul and brings forth emotion because of those harmonics. for example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Or8L8vBFVHo.html
