I am a teacher in an urban school district. I was a public school teacher, now I teach at a public charter. It's not the schools its the neighborhood. Depressed neighborhood produce depressed results no matter the choice. Even with school choice there is barely any parent participation and many parents don't value education as they don't have a quality education. Just an hamster wheel in the hood. Help the neighborhood and the results will spill in the schools.

Malika Brown right mentors are needed because not enough parents get involved...not because they don't love their children many are single parent households with no support from the church which and should provide economic empowerment to black neighborhoods
6 лет назад
The act of having a child one clearly cannot take care of, is evidence of the lack of love. Love is hard. Love means one waits. Love means one lives responsibly first, before having a child. Love means responsibility. Waiting around for churches or govt to provide economic support is just pathetic.

To the argument that charter schools, only help the “good students, but leave problem students behind” please understand, It’s not the job of the charter school, nor the public school, to raise, or correct “troubled students” that’s something that has to be addressed at the HOME; black people need to stop depending on the government in all aspects including education systems, to raise our children for us. School choice also, allows students to go the public school of their choice (it’s not just an issue of public vs. charter), and there are some EXCELLENT public schools, that are just as competitive as a private or charter school, the problem is not giving the option to people, to have options.

My problem is this. Let's say I'm a poor broke african american kid with little or no resources living in the projects. After all the speechifying, all the for or against arguments, etc, all of those guys at the end of the meeting will go back to their cars, nice houses, husbands, wives, etc -and I will be still stuck in the same situation as before the meeting. So do not penalize me when I decide to look out for my best interest. If my neighborhood public school is crappy, has been crappy for a long LONG time -and there is an alternative, do not withhold that alternative option from me due to some altruistic concept of making the public schools better.

As a parent who drives 4 kids to different schools every morning, I agree and disagree with both sides. I have experienced awesome results for my black children that are high achievers. But heart breaking experiences for my child with special needs when it comes to choice. She has even been turned away. Their reason was we can't provide speech therapy and they recommended I take her to our assigned district. They had me bring her records in only to turn me away. I eventually found a charter school to take her, only to have them modifying her grades to make it appear asthough she was at a learning level she wasn't. Just to get her off the rip. If it wasn't for the fact I look over her work, constantly complete teacher conference at, and look over completed assignments just so I can assist her , I would have never know she was being pushed through. Everything needs over site. I agree with one person on the panel, the children is forgotten on the focus. ALL children should be the focus.
@pragmaticeagle4832
@pragmaticeagle4832 6 лет назад
That's simply an excuse that supports the problem. ALL children can be supported. I do not believe the comment was saying all children are expected to excel, just that they all should be given fair and equal opportunity. We don't need a "minimum" standard, we just need a standard. & educators with the will, resources, and support to get the children to that standard. I've been in classes where the only reason I couldn't perform was because my family couldn't afford a $300 calculator. So, removing dumb barriers like that, and providing alternate means, or resources so that those in similar situations can attain the same results due to equal opportunity is the answer, not more excuses.

Apologies for the late comment. Just saw the video. As I listened to the panelists I noticed a very strong incentive to push the basic classroom education. Especially when it came to the cherry picking of students. Firstly not enough parents are truly serious about their child's education. Secondly not every child is going to be the next Einstein. With that said the vocational program must be reinstated. Those trades are what build a community. I myself was voc and have been self employed in the automotive industry for twenty years now. And I will agree that basic reading and math skills are a must, but higher learning is not a cure all. Trust me when I say today's trade industry is a proud one. Most people do not have a clue on how a car really works. If you do not possess a degree then you'd looked down upon. That needs to stop. I make six figures annually I don't work that hard. Mostly computer diagnostic, program and coding. The big bucks come whenever I have to do interior engine repairs. Also if we are going to build our communities we need skilled, knowledgeable, and qualified people that look like us. Without that looked to be overcharged and under serviced.

The parents should have a choice where their children attend school. Public, Charter, Magnet, Catholic, or Private. Lest not leave out Home Schooling. The parents should fight the government and these organizations on this forum. That is why the "Home Schooling is Rising" in this USA. Now here is one question has not been address: "Where does the Muslim Children attending school?????"

Black people have done nothing praiseworthy on their own initiative in the last five hundred years to recommend them to the serious consideration of progressive races. They have made no political, educational, independent contribution to civilization for which they can be respected by other races, thus making them unfit subjects for free companionship and association with other races who have achieved greatness on their own initiative.

@31:30 The difference between a low-performing charter and a low-performing traditional public school is that the charter gets shut down while the public school just continues to rot. At least there's some action and accountability. I notice teachers' unions always fail to mention that.
@MarciaArleneDebra

I am not a teacher, but I tutor students in math, and they always say "why can't my teacher teach me like you do." I remind them that I am not a teacher, but I know to do math because of the training from my profession which was not available to teachers. If I could not perform up to standard in my math courses I failed them-I did fail, and as I reflected on why, I learned more. In addition I had 3 hours to demonstrate my months of preparation; there were no interim marks-the final exam was the only exam. So when people talk about unqualified teachers, they do not know what they are saying. Teachers College does not make a good teacher.

Roland, you are so right about the wrap-around services. When I was growing up, we had a center on my block. It made a big difference. We had a place to go after schools where we would do our homework, talk to other adults besides our parents if we had problems or questions and get outside help. It would keep the kids off the streets and gave a better sense of community.

I agree,I'm for both traditional public schools and charter schools I think it depens on the leadership of those entities and their ability to help bring about positive outcomes for both schools,in terms of funding of inner city traditional public schools, laws should be put in place to accurately fund those districts and provide those schools ,faculties, and students with every resource available to help then survive and succeed ,there should be bonsuch thing as a school closing down in the United States of America, school closings to me is criminal

The problem with charter schools is that charter schools will only take the best of students and sends the trouble students back to the public school. So that student in public schools are students that charter students do not want. These trouble students return to public school come with many problem that must be addressed before they are able to learn. Charter school do not take special education students.

Not one approach is going to work for everyone. We need to have a combination of approaches to teaching our children. The biggest problem is that there is not enough money in the school system to do the things that need to be done. Teachers are not being allowed to actually teach. They are showing the children how to take tests.

This is exactly what the states want for us to argue the points, charter vs public. The parents should make the decisions for their children because we have to live with our families not the administrators. This panel could go on and on forever....how long? We need quality education in public schools and we need to address this with our state's governments, local government and federal. We need to focus on addressing the changes at the government levels. It's important for us to get involved. .

I think talking about New York and Washington DC Charters and Public Schools distort the conversation. Most black people are in the South and the manifestation of the problems in the North may not even be true in the South. As a result the fixes in the North won't work in the South. Most of the Southern States are right to work States so the portions of the conversation that references Unions is mostly invalid in the South.

The selection process for charter schools should be first come first serve. I’m just saying. But we have to discuss finances because the many purpose for integrating schools was to have the same books, facilities etc. My issue with charters schools is that they take funds from traditional schools who already have tight budgets. Charter schools creates lesser enrollment in traditional schools which takes away elective courses and funding for those facilities . We need to fight for more funds not more physical schools. We need more funds to higher high quality teachers instead of substitutes teachers. I believe higher salaries will make the teaching profession more competitive. We need more funds for quality facilities, materials, extra curricular activities, trade classes etc.

Countywide consolidated school districts, so that urban children have access to suburban schools, is a better solution than creating entirely new schools. There also needs to be neighborhood desegregation based on income in metropolitan areas, so that more people from low income families can live in good school districts. Exclusionary zoning laws in the suburbs, accompanied by multiple school districts being allowed to operate in one county or one metropolitan area, is how we got here. There was a court ruling in 1974 called Milliken v. Bradley that if it had gone the other way, would have required metropolitan areas to desegregate their public schools.
@kofi7777
@kofi7777 5 лет назад
Another point Charter Schools are public schools but as far as Cherry Picking goes, all children are not teachable in what you are trying to teach them at. Case in point HBCUs and their grad rates. Children showing up are not prepared. Also, African-Americans over-represented among low-paying college majors. More African-Americans are going to college than ever before. But according to new research from the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University, African-American college students are more likely to pursue majors that lead to low-paying jobs, setting up many for future debt and underemployment. And over time these occupational choices contribute to the wealth and opportunity gap between whites and blacks that spans generations.

Public school should provide students that fill needs in the community. This includes engineers, doctors, lawyers, general educators, politicians, criminal justice, agriculture. That is what drives communities, therefore focus on those fields in public education. As community needs change, then the education change. To get those educators, states need to require professionals in the field to field gaps in teaching. Second, we need to move from a farming educational time schedule. There is absolutely no need to have that. That is valuable time lost. Also, there will be no need to have police inside any school if students see a future in their education and community. Public education should also continue until the child has an associate level education.
@teetime3421
@teetime3421 3 года назад
In our community, most charter schools available to Black children offer a substandard education, and are a drain on the public school system. Also, many people cannot afford the quality private and charter schools that cost upwards of $10,000.00 plus a year which far exceeds what the vouchers provide. The schools can also discriminate against students they don’t want. Eventually, we will have no choice at all because public schools will be completely defunded and quality charter and private schools will be unavailable which I believe is the long term goal of this White supremacy dominated society that we live in. This reminds me of the “the tough on crime” conversations that happened in the 90’s when many of our community leaders were in favor of the “three strikes law” which resulted in the mass incarceration of Black people. The promotion of charter and private schools is short sighted and will be detrimental to our communities in the long run. In my opinion, we should put out energy into to fighting for quality well funded public schools in our own neighborhoods. Schools staffed by well qualified caring people who look like the children they serve.

As much as I love the discussion about legislative movement, I wonder about a collective effort by these same leaders -- wjho reach down to look for people (even if they do not have a degree, but has a clear gift for working with or teaching students) -- and creating a running prog from a local level ... and guiding that input with experts at the helm. There are many people standing on the outside who feel or do not see a clear path to higher achievement. Even a college graduate may not find the in-road to operating within these higher eschalon arenas ... b/c everyone needs to earn an income. We must spread our wings in both directions --- up & down.... to take control of this schooling issue. We have all the power we need ON THAT STAGE. It's time to stop talking .... and create our own action-answers!!

Most private schools are religious based so vouchers (based on tax money) cannot be used for them anyway.... Sure, a few black kids will be able to go to richer schools, but the majority will have to go to the same schools they were before - which will have even less money now. This is a solution ? Read the title and description of the video. Black people talking about what's best for black students. If you want to see a white panel, search " is school choice the white choice?"

Listen to them, they want school choice to exist within the present traditional system. Like a school within a school. Let present teachers run a charter school within the present traditional school. I say hell no. Let charter formation groups get their own buildings separate from the traditional buildings. Reforming Charters 1. West Michigan Aviation Academy Betsy Devos husband's creation 2. St Louis Construction training Charter School 3. Aero Space Charter School Lakeland Regional in Florida 4. William Penn Charter School Drone camp 5. Maritime Academy Charter School in Philadelphia 6. Baseball Delta Charter School 7. Meridian Medical Arts Charter High school in Idaho 8. Arizona Golf Association Tourney Charter School 9. Sankofa African Center School Houston Texas 10 Timbuktu Charter School in Detroit Michigan 11. Charter school for Applied basketball in New York.

@16:30 That's incredibly wrong and condescending. The black political elite has got to go, in my opinion.

TALKING HEADS INDEED, as a 20 year Journalism, Fine Art, and Mass Media PUBLIC school TEACHER, where is/ are the teachers? Do their "real" world daily classroom experiences count, or matter? Who composed this false representative panel? Having taught in all scio-economic LEVELS your panel is sorely ill conceived. HINT, politics, economics, and communities, along with culture factor into a school and district's success. Terry Thomas, M A in African American Studies, Doctoral Candidate, Dissertation Focus: Implemeniing Black History and Diversity curricula in all Ga. public schools, k thru 12 and advocate for the proposed bill to teach Black Hiistory from an African Origin of Civilization paradigm, Native American, Latino, Women, and Jewish Holocaust histories or America's Oppressed.
