@@teabreakbeats would love to hear you do an in depth explanation/breakdown of the chord designer. Information on the details and how to use it / maximize its potential are hard to find .
@@averyl6372 Thanks for watching - good idea for a video, I'll keep it on the todo list! I used the chord designer in my previous beat-breakdown (although I didn't go in depth with it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8iFZ0EkTzH4.html )
Thanks for the support! It took a few days for me to make the video around my day job...if only Roland put me on the Beta testing team I'd be able to get these vids out sooner!
@@teabreakbeats you have an approachable voice and your presentation is methodical. I still think the lack of midi tracks is an issue. Clip record is a godsend for time stretching. But alas no sample truncate, it would save on load time and there is a 5min limit of sample time
@@teabreakbeats Absolutely, it's having easy access personal templates. Every time I change a sound it changes the colour. Also, I make all the tracks green and all the scatter pads green. I saw a video with the notes as purple, I have no idea how he did that... Insert track deactivates the track you are inserting to with no way of uniting the sound, I find that weird, I have yet to see any use of it as there is already a PC in. The way to user kits is make them part of a project, but kit only projects...
Agree - I think insert makes more sense on the 707 - it feels like a total waste of track on the 101 just to stack another MFX on top. I'll have a look into the purple notes to see if I can figure it out.
I am really stoked by this release! The new chord designer function is really awesome and the count-in for the metronome was about due. The Looper export is awesome but I don't know yet if or how I'll use it personally. About the scene chaining though, while I can imagine the possibilities, I am simply just soooo confused with everything clips chaining, scenes, and now scenes chaining. Maybe it's because it is my first groove box and my background is more "traditional". Like if I wanted to do a standard into-verse-chorus-verse-bridge-chorus song, what would be the way to go about it?
This unit is a lot to take in. I wasn't a fan of it 2 years back, but now... Whole new ballgame. It's almost fully fleshed out and between this and my Dreadbox Typhon my GAS is quenched. Be patient and enjoy mastering just ONE skill a day or week. You are not alone in this journey and probably already know how to use it better than Roland groovebox staff. #MC101 #EndUserKnowsBest #Dawless
@Daniel Roussel I still need to work with it to see how useful scene chain will be, but it seems super easy to lose track of what is what! almost like you need a note pad to keep track! At the moment, I use clips like sketch pads and I only use clip chain to tie together shorter melodies or drum fills. I then mix and match the clips into scenes that I like (hold clip and Long Press a pad to assign the currently playing clips to that scene). My current workflow would be to export out to a DAW at this stage for arranging (see my beat breakdown videos). I think in your case once you have 4 scenes for intro / verse / chorus / bridge you can copy them into slots: INTRO Saved in Scene Pad 1 VERSE Saved in Scene Pad 2, 4 CHORUS scene Pad 3, 6 Bridge Scene Pad 5 - and then chain them.
After the new update 1.71, The Drum + compressor tracks no longer work as before and delay and reverb sends for individual drum pads doesn't seem to work. Anyone else experience this or know why?
Hi - that is a known bug. I think they just released 1.72, I haven't tried the new update yet, but I think it fixes the bug. No other features were added, just a bug fix. Thanks for watching!
It's great! - It does have it's downsides (like loads of menu-diving, the pads are not velocity sensitive, it takes a while to load a project) - but overall, the portability and battery operation really won me over, and they have released quite a few updates which have made it even better over time! Good luck with choosing!
8:40 "This is great if you want to apply a filter sweep to a metronome" LOL, it's so funny, but someone somewhere will find utility in this new added functionality #MC101 #Dawless #MetronomeEffects
There is sooo much to love about the MC101. Do you think there is a risk of it getting too deep and then there will be too much stuff in the menus etc?
Hi - good question. I already think it is approaching a bit too much on the shift menus (like for example - the shortcut to enter chord designer is not very intuitive). I think for the most part it is well thought out, and as existing users, we can learn the incremental features as they are added. It is a trade-off between functionality and portability... and I'd rather get the functionality even if it is hidden in menus...for example the full synth engine on the mini-nova is editable on the hardware even if it is knees deep in menus...I hardly touch it but glad it is there if I need to tweak something. I'd love if the unlocked the full synth engine in the 101
Nice video. Def answered a couple questions I had. One I can’t find the answer to is if I create a new clip with a midi file loaded, why can’t I use a different instrument using the same midi file on a different clip? Is there a way or am I doing something wrong. I wanna use that same midi file but at different times and with a different instrument. Please help. Is this possible?
Great comprehensive tutorial, very well delivered. Thank you for spending your time on this video! I love the export Wav and chord designer feature especially. Is there a way to pan instrument, but per step? Like in trap songs, when Hi-hat comes sometimes from left or right speaker only at certain steps?.. I can't find any info on this. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! You can load the same hi hat sample in two pads and then pan one left and one right? Alternatively you can set one of the knobs to control pan (and then step sequence the knob value) however, it will pan the full drumkit! If I find any other workarounds I will let you know, or if you need more help on this one I can make a video. Cheers
Thanks for watching. Sorry, not sure if I 100% understand your question. When you say "live record", do you mean (a) overdub midi notes into clips on a tone track or (b) record audio into a clip on a looper track? In both cases, I've not tried recording in conjunction with the chaining functions in the background...but I'll give it a go and let you know what happens.
@@teabreakbeats thanks & sorry. but yes, i mean a) overdubbing midi in a tone track when in the new "song mode" (i.e. having layouted some tied scenes and record additional noted or drum hits into it). i don't have a 101 yet, but it really would be great if you check that out!
Thanks for watching. I think the looper tracks are stereo. I don't think there is a way to convert to mono to save memory at the moment, but that is a good idea! Hopefully in new versions.
Hi, thanks for the video. I have a question. Can I insert a 3 minute wav audio track that plays below the clips? With the function of Audio Insertion. It would be great for those of us who use it to play live, and there is some backing track throughout the song.
Hi - there are two ways of doing this 1) load the sample into a pad on a drum track and trigger it 2) load the sample into a looper track. Note that there is a sample length limitation of the MC-101 so you have to be careful of how long your samples are (see here: rolandus.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041899512-MC-101-How-long-can-a-sample-be-loaded-into-a-tone-track-or-a-drum-track- and here rolandus.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360041899672-MC-101-What-format-and-length-of-sample-can-be-loaded-into-a-looper-clip-
Hi - I'll have a play around and make a video about it, off the top of my head, I think you can load the same sample into two different pads on a drum track and set the start time to be different? Thanks for watching.
I'm having trouble chaining scenes when using more than one bank. Scenes 1-8 chain perfectly, but despite engaging "chain on" and setting the length, scene 8 stops at the end rather than moving to scene 9 in the next bank. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
This is strange, I can't replicate that, it seems to work, On scene 8, I set up Chain ON and Length = 4 and it seems to jump to the next scene (i.e. sene 1 on bank 2). Sorry I couldn't help more.
@@teabreakbeats Thanks for your response, it encouraged me to have another look & It's just dawned on me that I've been mistakenly pressing pad #9 thinking it was the next bank, instead of moving on to #10 🙄. Thanks for these video guides. They're an invaluable help!
Hi, thks for yr video. In reference to metronome output it possible to send the clk to the phones output or to find a different use of this pre/post fx for sending metronome to another out?
Any reply, suggestions? I don’t understand what kind of utility has metronome position if is not possible to exclude it from the mixout and listen on another out
Hi - not that I can think of. The only thing I can think of is if you use the USB to hook up to a computer and play the track without metronome out of speakers from the computer, then listen with headphones connected on the MC-101 with the metronome using the original setting per 8:44 in the video. sorry for the late reply, I didn't see your comments as I was really busy with work the last couple of months. Thanks for watching.
Hello - make sure you have the latest firmware version, the chord designer is quite new. Then, you need to be on a "Tone Track". Once you have a tone track, press "NOTE" once and the Pads will turn Red like a keyboard (this is "NOTE" mode). Press "NOTE" again and your pads will turn light green and the "NOTE" button will flash (this is CHORD MODE). When the pads are light green, HOLD "SHIFT" + press "FILTER" at the same time. This will open the chord designer. Hope this is making sense. Thanks for watching! Good luck.
We want more 101 videos and please show how you integrate the 101 with other hardware and if you have used a controller to make it easier to play on the 101, like the novation launchpad pro or others
This is all cool and I definitely did the last firmware update however as of today I can't find any firmware on Roland's page for some reason and I'm getting super agitated
This is where I found it (note the latest version is 1.72 which is pretty much the same as 1.71 with some bugs fixed): www.roland.com/uk/products/mc-101/downloads/
Hi - Im still using it, maybe not as much as I did originally as we are not travelling as much these days (I got it to keep me busy on a long train commute) and I got extremely busy at work over the last few months, but I still enjoy using it! I've been using it more as an idea starter and then finish the tracks off in my DAW. Check out a couple of my beat breakdown videos on my channel to see how I use it. It has it's quirks due to menu diving however, they have been adding features over the last year or so. I'll be making some more videos soon, so let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll try and address it in my long term review. Thanks for watching!
@@teabreakbeats Thank you for your reply. I've found your videos extremely useful. Do you use other synths or drumachines to pair it with ? It would be cool to see it implemented. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. Just a Quick question. I have just bought a used Mc101 in v1.5. Can I jump up to the latest version or should I do every version upgrade ?
Yes, absolutely. You can jump straight to version 1.72 from 1.5. There is no need to go to 1.6 first. They don't mention it anywhere in the manual, but I saw a post from Brian Lamb (Roland Employee) on facebook. Enjoy the MC-101 and check out my other videos for more tricks.
Is anybody else having this problem? Every time I do a new project, import a wave file on pad one (track one drum program) the sample fades to zero volume after triggered? I’ve tried changing the one shot settings , and etc. it just keeps happening I’m almost done with this piece of gear! Every time I play a sample it just slowly fades out like I’m turning the volume knob slowly down but I’m not
Hi thanks for watching - do you have a compressor on the track? There was a bug where no sound would play, but they fixed this with v1.72 firmware: [ Ver.1.72 ] MAY 2021 Bug Fixes The following bug was fixed. No sound when pads are routed to COMP1-6 on DRUM + COMP track.
@@RadiumZ1 Ah...it might be the decay and release settings? ... check the settings in this video where i get a sine wave to keep playing instead of fading out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zzDpwpP4Zbs.html
Howdy!! thanks for all these tutorial videos. im curious if a feature exists....is there a way to start playback from the current measure ? e.g. im making fine adjustments to some steps in the middle of a 128 step seq and would like to avoid hearing it from the top everytime i want to hear my work back. lol if you or anyone here has the solution, ill name a track after you!! :-]
Hi Caleb! Thanks for watching. As always with this thing, you need to do a bit of a hack. You can use "First / Last Step" and loop the range you want to work on in the sequence (you need to repeat for every track) : In Track 1: Press Shift and SEQ to enter "First / Last Step". Then use the Measure buttons to scroll to the page you want your sequence to start and Press "SHIFT+Pad" to set the first Step (e.g. Step 65). Then scroll to say Step 128 and press "Pad" to set the last step. Your sequence should now just loop between step 65 and 128 when you press play (do this for all tracks and it will be like looping that section temporarily). Turn "First / Last Step" OFF by toggling your selection again. Can't wait to hear the track you name after me!
Is it possible for me to combine my current mish mosh of sdz’s using this to consolidate the sdz’s with 1 or 4 or 27 etc tones in it into far fewer banks without having to cut and paste each one 1 at a time like I’d have to do with Zenology Pro? Thank you
Hi mate - not sure if this is possible, my free-trial subscription to Roland Could ran out (and I hate subscriptions!) so I don't know the answer. Maybe set up blank "favourites" project loaded up with your fav sounds in clips, and then import sounds from project as a workaround?
@@teabreakbeats I’m able to do it with my Jupiter Xm, load in the SDZ’s pick and choose the ones I want to put in my own Bank and Export them as an SDZ with upto 128 of them in it. You can actually do it EASIER on the Jupiter X/Xm, I assume Fantoms and Juno X than in Zenology Pro I find.
Hi Teabreak.. thanks for liking my track on Sound cloud "Summerz Here" I'm on route for my next, I'd like to know if I can sample a clip in track 4 & apply it to a pad in the drum track 1. Hope you know what I mean.. cheers Stu
Yes you can! First you need to sample your clip into a looper track. For more information on how to do that, watch my video on "Unlimited Tracks": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9MN22px8OnA.html After you have sampled your clip into a looper track you can then export it as a wav file and load it back into a drum track.. See 6:56 in this video! Hope that helps!!!
You can use Zenology Pro to make custom patches and send them to the 101. But you need to pay for it (it's not free). I don't use it as it's $229 lifetime key or $9.99 endless subscription. I think that is a bit too expensive for my hobbies so I didn't buy it. Thanks for watching! www.roland.com/us/products/rc_zenology_pro/
hey Teabreaks, sorry to bother, I just cannot link scenes properly, the drums don't play in the second scene etc and I don't know how to set a scene to a template (clip settings)
Hi thanks for watching. Make sure you have set the correct clips (i.e. including drums) for the second scene. To do this, play the clips you want for the second scene, then press clip + seq to enter scene mode (pads turn blue) then hold down the second pad to set Scene 2 to be the currently playing clips. Hope that helps. Gabe Miller's video also has some tips on scenes for beginners: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q_Pw9140mSE.html
@@teabreakbeats cheers, I watched Gabe's video's, nice presentation, I think I'm just overworked. Thankyou muchly for the effort, I am sure it will sink in though:) (BTW I've been experimenting with a 7" windows tablet and so far it links well with the 101)
I just want more than 128 steps , I want at least 64 bars , plus the ability to save my own kits , I hate the built in drum sounds ,I’m more of chopped up samples drums guy and it’s a pain in the arse having to create a kit every time , I use mine like a mini MPC so these would be on my wish list
I still can't believe you can't rename your own kit. However, you can import a kit from another project (so you can use projects like presets...but it is annoying that all custom kits within the project are called INIT KIT or something stupid!) Anyway - the thing has it's limitations, but I still enjoy using it as a little idea generator and then finish in Ableton. Thanks for watching.
