We noticed a volume imbalance on the previous edit of this video. Thanks for all the comments and feeding that back to us, we have since adjusted both output signals from the drum machines, and hopefully, should make the comparison a little fairer!

So why don't you dial in the tone (ie. tuning the kick) on the RD-8 when you compare the sounds in stead of having the knobs 12 O'Clock? I believe the tone should be the single most important thing when you run them side by side. You (or we who are watching) can't judge a sound when they have a different tuning.

I could really care less how close to Roland's sound the Behringer is.... The reasonably priced Behringer is very capable, and can be utilized completely... It is a tool, and only as capable for a task as the person using said tool.... The statements and arguments about clones, sounding identical, etc, are rubbish to me... The fact that the Behringer is as affordable as it is is a no brainer for me... So, ultimately, I do not care whether it sounds exactly like the Roland....

Not an owner of either (yet) but I've seen tons of videos showing these and the original 808, and the quirky programming. I'm a bit surprised there isn't a software editor for either of them where you can at least program a beat/sequence in a computer world and transfer it to a memory slot in the unit. Maybe they'll make a computer editor down the road that would make beat creation a bit less cumbersome? I get that part of the joy is working in the real world environment of these types of machines. I don't want to lose that, but to help us out it would sure be nice. I really like the programming, both step and live action, of the Korg Monologue. Very easy to program step or real time, and you can sequence parameter movements as well. As dead simple as that is, with modern computer horsepower, make an option to simplify the work flow on these machines, please.

If you want to program on the pc, why not just use a daw?
@drsamurai009
@drsamurai009 3 года назад
@@hongdekong It's a lot easier to program a pattern/sequence in a DAW than using a limited hardware interface that is modeled after 40 or so year old limited programming interfaces of the original hardware. For example, it is much easier to program the new Behringer TD-3 on the computer than using it's interface. Plus after it's been programmed, then you can modulate the physical controls by hand while it's playing back for real time performance. It's also way more cost effective to program these hardware units and take them out live to perform a show than drag your (way more expensive) computer along for the road trip.
@emiloguechoons9030
@emiloguechoons9030 2 года назад
eh? have you downloaded behrigners software on pc, it does exactly that, allows you to program and save it to a slot in the drum machine
@emiloguechoons9030
@emiloguechoons9030 2 года назад
@@drsamurai009 also, comparing the programing of the td3 and the rd8 is slightly silly, the td3 is a pain to program yeah, just like the original, but the rd8 is a dream to program, using the physical control is one of the biggest reasons to buy a drum machine, and the rd8 is incredibly fun and I intuitive

It is obvious to anyone with a brain, two hands really using an interface surface, and a halfway skillful pair of ears used to dry neutral mixing, that the Behringer is the better choice hands down. Artificial digital boominess like from the digital Roland version may sound pleasing to clueless listeners, who perhaps regard their extra-bass boomboxes or unreal headphones as reference for monitoring. Anyone else will understand, why the Behringer analog version, with it's proper size and single outs, is the way to go. If I want digital and processed 808 boom, I use software instead of the digital Roland clone! Clueless remarks down in the thread don't change much...

@defrigge
@defrigge 3 года назад
I have to admit, that besides great analog sound, the Behringer had too many little flaws and a bad clap in it's first revision. They fixed some issues, but their (just announced) reworked 2nd edition might be the first all in all satisfying offer - we'll hear and see. The TR-8s is a really fine drum machine with a lot of flexible use options. But it does not offer the original 808 analog sound nearly as convincing in practical use, as the analog Behringer does.
@alexwestconsulting
@alexwestconsulting 3 года назад
@@defrigge RD-8 is a one trick pony. A very large one trick pony. Obviously the TR-08 is a one trick pony as well (albeit with a 1/4 footprint) and so I'd rather have RD-8, but unless you are just a pure 808-head it makes no sense to have a machine that large that can only do one thing. And I'll take multi outs over usb over multi audio outs any day (audio inputs are expensive and I only have so many). Straight up, if it weren't for the fact that's it's still effectively a clone of an instrument that now costs thousands, people would laugh at it. I've got like 10 of the new Behringer clones so I'm not hating on Behringer (here anyway) but I can't see anyone getting much real-world use out of an RD-8 before getting tired of it's limited capabilities (and, again, it's size). More like they have it for bragging rights, like it has some inherent worth because the real thing costs so much. I wouldn't say that the TR-08 isn't "nearly as convincing", I'd say it's not quite as good when directly A/B'ed against the Behringer (not denying this). After processing it's almost indistinguishable. For 808 I use sample libraries or make my own sounds on my analog synths (Jomox,Vermona,etc.) that give way more sound scaping capabilities to play in a more modern sample-capable "drum machine" (like the TR-08s, or Deluge, or even the Circuit) . True analog matters far more on a much more nuanced machine like a synth. For drum machines, people actually prefer a consistent tone than a nuanced one so quality drum samples are gold. Only Behringer drum machine I'd actually spring for is the RD-6. Nice and small. If the Rd-8 was a quarter to third of its size I'd consider it. Behringer's new ecosystem has young enthusiasts buying up a few pieces of limited gear that gets them not much to work with, relatively. It's like the Volcas before (that were even cheaper) that people (including me) loaded up on only to find that in the end there wasn't much they could do with them ultimately beyond a limited workflow and sound. Bottom line, unless you are a purist with cash to burn, better to sink your money elsewhere than an RD-8 (and certainly not the TR-08, like you said, not disagreeing on this).

No Reverb Comparison: 1:03 TR-08 vs 1:26 RD-8 .... RD-8 wins hands down. All analog circuitry with analog mixer. I haven't heard a better drum machine than this RD-8 lol, other than the Roland TR-808 which sounds about the same to my ears. Would be a better comparison if each piece in the kit was tuned the same as the other and volume levels of each piece are set the same. e.g. the clap volume is lower in this example on the RD-8. What's nice is you can run all RD-8 instruments into a mixer and eq each piece there alogn with any aux sends etc.
@cubdukat
@cubdukat 2 года назад
They're both very close to the real thing, and that speaks well of both of them, but I would have to give the nod to the Behringer for no other reason than it's true analog. I really don't understand why both Roland and Yamaha seem to have this almost complete aversion to doing true analog instruments.

The RD8 comes through sonically as very flat in this recording. The Tr-08 has much more depth of frequency. Brighter hats and deeper toms and bass... I think the Tr-08 sounds way better.
