I hear both sides. The reason people choose straight edge over AA and NA is because those organizations approach you as if not tolerating drugs and alcohol is some kind of dysfunction and that you're too sick or weak to operate like a "normal" person. The straight edge empowers the person, sobriety is a strength, which is the truth. Take a look at the normal person in society now, usually they are trapped into a cubicle, physically deconditioned, unhealthy, insecure and many have no courage without alcohol. They depend on alcohol. People we consider normal actually struggle with going a month sober.
@ohjayism
@ohjayism 6 лет назад
I also think that what a lot of people don't get is that when we are in a place where there are drunk people getting confrontational, we are completely sober. Put yourself in that position. More people start fights because they're drunk than because they're sober. I've talked with a lot of people and the violence is either against dealers, rival crews or obnoxious drunks.

right, from straight edge one is taking a position of strength. from AA it is a position of a beaten victim, and always a victim.

@@ohjayism But if there are no dealers, rival crews or obnoxious drunks around, people who just happen to be there are often beaten up. In many hardcore crews, violence has long since become an end in itself. It's no longer about self-protection or any ideals, but about exercising power. The right of the strongest. FSU, for example. Some of the crew have at some point sold the stuff they took from the dealers themselves.

How many of you really were there because I remember fighting Skins more than fighting someone who did drugs. Yes Drugs were not tolerated but Skins were accepted nor are they today. I fought along with my brothers in 24 and FSU for preserving something bigger than just drugs. I spilled my blood to make sure no one would ever be told because of your race and simple minded views could you ever not go to a show. Look at shows today to shows in the 90s. Sadly it seems that the reason Skins don't wear there laces out anymore isn't because they were sued it's because they know we won and they know there are serious consequences for ignorance

@Broimsatan

I've been into the Hardcore scene for almost 30 years. Bottom line is it used to be violent. The first show I ever went to I was jumped because simply no one knew who I was. Ironically I went back the next week later and everyone knew who I was. I was Straight Edge but it felt more like a hazing. I then felt a brotherhood I'll never feel again. The biggest fight really wasn't over drugs it was over Skins. Drugs and drinking were not tolerated but if you were and still are a rascit then run. Run far away. The foundation of Straight Edge was based on a sentence by Minor Threat I GOT EDGE but Edge wasn't just about drugs or alcohol it was about doing the right thing and the right thing was taking out Skins. I believe anyone in the mid 90s can say we did not tolerate substance abuse but we absolutely had zero tolerance for were Skins. I hope my words made sense because I'm finding it difficult to explain everything in a simple comment. Hardcore is a lifestyle and young bloods today need to know that this isn't just a genre of music that it's a lifestyle

The true meaning of straight edge is a person who personally chooses to refrain from drugs, alcohol, and casual sex. It's a lifestyle choice. Also, the person that chooses that lifestyle refrains from violence as well. The guests aren't straight edge at all. I have friends that drink, and drink responsibly, It doesn't give me the right to go ahead to attack them. We hangout and they know that I don't drink and doesn't push me to it. We respect each other's choices and it works out great. I love them to death, no matter what.

Straight Edge bands promote friendship, unity, community and most of all are against any violence whatsoever. I don't know which straight edge bands those ignorant and violent fools are or were listening to. They got it all wrong. @chedderz66

Don't kid yourself, these guys LOVE the violence and thrive on it. Swarm beatings are mere sport and happily accepted as a part of the lifestyle. It's an absolute shame. It's a little ironic to beat and hurt someone who is hurting their body by smoking.
@essentialviews390
@essentialviews390 5 лет назад
well what most people outside of hardcore don't understand is that is our sport. we were not there to hurt anyone. we are dancing. we expect anyone there knows what goes on. if it is approached like a sport a person would be in great physical condition and would never have a problem with an individual surprising them. no one would ever get a shot in on that person. ever. its like martial arts for the "learning by doing" kind of person. if i got hit i would blame my self for not being aware of what was going on. unless, of course i knew for a fact someone was targeting me... now, if someone went there, didn't know it was an aggressive environment, and got offended that one of my friends ran into them. that might end in a bad way. there are a lot of things unknown. if someone is confronting my friend i don't know how many people are with that person, or how many people my friend is actually up against. yes i, and a lot of others will be watching that closely.

Lol. That’s complete nonsense. 99.9% straight edgers have never even seen that happen, let alone done it. That sort of thing has nothing to do with straight edge and everything to do with one random guy, who happens to be “straight edge” who’s just looking for a reason to beat someone up. Not because he sees them smoking. But because he’s a psychopath.

these people do not represent the straight edge movement as a whole. Ian Mckaye of the punk/hardcore rock group coined the term Straightedge back in the early 80s. Ian left the hardcore scene because the violence. Henry Rollins, Ray Cappo, John Porcelli, John Joseph, Anthony Civorelli and their music spearheaded the early straightedge movement... Its rooted in music and friends. A lot of Straightedgers went into Hare Krishna and other peaceful practices. These people are using sXe as a means of acceptance and self righteousness. I am straightedge and trust me these people do not represent the larger demographic of us

another thing, you know, straight edge might save one's life from addiction or overdosing, but more violence than society is interested in can result in one losing their life to prison... and when one has been in that life for more than a decade it is easy to react w violence when it is the last thing that should be done. and i mean the last thing in terms of how fucked up life will be afterwards.
@joemiller7082
@joemiller7082 3 года назад
There isn’t more violence in straight edge than there is in the rest of the hardcore scene or in society at large. Straight Edge gangs Roaming around just beating people up is EXTREMELY rare. There are many 50-100 guys who have ever done that in like 40 years, of tens of thousands of people who are straight edge. Straight edge having a violence problem is an urban myth. Aside from the FSU crew in the 80s where a handful of guys ran around beating people up(a lot of whom weren’t even straight edge, just guys looking to fight). It isn’t a problem. The percentage of straight edge guys who start fights is not higher than the percentage of people who start fights. I’d even bet it’s much, MUCH lower. There is no link to violence from straight edge that is exclusive to straight edge and not identical to the problem in teenage culture overall.
