Gary Oldman as 'Drexl Spivey' is one of his top favorite characters! He accepted to part on hearing " "you play a white guy who thinks he's a black pimp. " I'll do it!" I keep replying that part over and over.
I think Smiley WAS hands down his best performance. He carried the whole movie by just being quietly menacing with the slightest eye movements and subtlest nuances in his voice. it was mind-blowing. Far more difficult than other crazy psycho villain / famous historical figure roles which are, at the end of the day, not that hard to pull off for an actor of his chameleon skills.
The upshot is he finally won an Oscar, for his incredible performance as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. The downside is this should be like his 5th or 6th Oscar win and should have had multiple Oscar nominations going back to the 1980s. Oldman should’ve won for Tinker Tailer, but The Artist seemed to be the favorite that year. That is if we thought the Academy Awards were truly honoring the best in film every year.
You have to campaign in order to be nominated for an Oscar, like running for office. It's self driven. I don't think Oldman really cared too much about it back in the day. Now that actors are like 'brands' and surrounded by yes men, their people campaign for them and so everyone is nominated for anything these days it seems.
Oldman is one of those rare actors that's never full of himself and realizes movies are what they are for the most part, just a job. One that he happens to be very very good at but he knows at the end of the film he's still just Gary Oldman, playing someone else. One of the truly great character actors of his generation.
I agree. When he thanked America for giving him "livelihood" at the Oscars, I was kinda taken aback because you seldom see that kind of humbleness in Hollywood stars. He loves his job, excels at it, enjoys it and is grateful for it. Down-to-earth and awesome guy.
His ability to work just sink his soul into literally any role, no matter how dumb or how much he hates it, he is gives it his all and brings us absolutely legendary performances.
I find it fascinating how so many great actors have completely different approaches to playing a character on the one hand you have someone like Daniel Day Lewis who never breaks character even when he’s not shooting and on the other you’ve got Gary Oldman whose just Gary playing a character but they’re both amazing.
When I went through his Filmography, I realized that there were several movies I've seen where he's in it, but I didn't even recognize him. That's how good he is.
Some of the most memorable performances in cinema history but if he stopped you on the street and asked for the time I doubt you'd recognise him. Extraordinary acting talent.
I've watched it a few days ago and I didn't even realize it was him until I saw the credits. Weird to think about, since he didn't even wear any make-up or nothing.
When people ask me, "What's an example of someone fabricating a bullshit comment in a desperate hope for likes in the RU-vid comments section?" I just direct them to you.
The second time I saw True Romance I saw Gary Oldman in the credits and was like "huh, he played Drexl ... are you kidding me". I just didn't recognise him cause I just saw the role. That's how good of an actor he is.
lovely it's a hard time for the world now,we are all going through a dark phase but we can only win this war over this pandemic if we stand together, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.keep practicing self hygiene and wash your hands and keep supporting my career we will bounce back strong#staysafe#stayhome
I was shocked when I heard that. There have always been actors who don't like rehearsal and prefer to act in the moment, but I thought they were the exceptions. Watch old Inside the Actor's Studios interviews. A lot of the featured actors love to rehearse.
@@josephcarl4167 :) exactly. If you need Tom Hardy to tell you how great the greatest actor in film is than you may need to catch up on your film education lol.
@@josephcarl4167 I think Hardy can disappear into roles and characters too. I don't know if he'll ultimately prove to be quite as good as Oldman, but Hardy is super talented.

It's so sad reading the comments. There are so few people that appreciate "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy". Gary Oldman's George Smiley is a perfect performance. I really can't understand how everyone can forget about this movie.
It's so nice to see how much he loves that role because he did it in an understated way. He even did an audio commentary for the BluRay and you could hear him beeming.
I adore this man so darn much, he's such an inspiration to me. But the moment Sirius Black appeared on the screen with 'Enough talk Remus, c'mon lets kill him!' my heart skipped a beat! I love Sirius Black so much and if it wasn't for that role I wouldn't have known the genius of Gary Oldman so I'll always have a mega soft spot for Sirius.
After your sharing that very personal memory I have to tell you that I had directly opposite experience. If it wasn`t Gary Oldman I wouldnt have gone to the movie theatre for the Prisoner of Azkaban and I wouldnt have discovered a whole world of Harry Potter. Cause I lived so far away from England or english speaking counries that I missed all the hype about those books. But Gary Oldman on the other hand was always a big deal to me. God bless him
THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING SIRIUS BLACK! THATS THE ONLY REASON WHY I CAME TO WATCH THIS VID! MOST OF THE PEOPLE ARE ASKING WHERES LEON?!?! I LOVE SIRIUS SOOOOOOO MUCH
Many of you mention his overlooked role in 'Leon:the Proffesional' which was one of his great performances, but another one most people forget about or haven't really seen is a 1990 movie called "State of Grace" with Sean Penn. Oldman gives a fantastic performance in that movie as well. he makes for a great 'bad guy'
State of Grace. Amazing performance by Gary Oldman. Love that film. Came out the same year as Goodfellas and got overshadowed but it's still a great film.
By far the best actor of this generation. When he plays a role, he truly becomes the character. You forget that you are watching Gary Oldman and just see the character. How he doesn't have an Oscar is beyond me. Far too many actors with Oscars that are just playing caricatures of themselves.
It's kinda ironic that someone who has built his incredible career by making people forget he's British finally won the heart of Academy members by playing the quintessential British icon
I LOVE this man's work. I just have to disagree with him on SID AND NANCY. Yes, Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungeon were a mess, but Gary's performance as Sid is brilliant.
My opinion of the movie as a whole is mixed, but he was great in it. I totally understand his disinterest in looking back at work he did decades ago, though. To him he probably just sees a much less experienced and inferior version of himself now.
Gary Oldman is one of the best actors and is completely underrated. I couldn't tell you half the movie he's been in because he is so often unrecognizable.
In my opinion, Gary Oldman is one of the all-time greats. This piece should have been much longer, and included a number of other roles in addition to the ones he touched on.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, is one of those slow burns. I think I loved that movie the most out of all the others, although I'm a sucker for slow burns, namely Solaris, and No Country for Oldmen. A film that moves along so slowly, almost like molasses. i cry inside every time i'm reminded that I never got to see Star Trek The Motion Picture in Theaters.
"Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" is one of my favorite movies. I'm most impressed by Gary Oldman's George Smiley performance. I have read John le Carre's books, and Oldman is George Smiley.
One of the most humble, honest and down to earth actors in the world....I'm surprised he got to this age with the his own issues through life. Others would have left us by now. Watch the making of Dracula and see how much he puts into his roles. And how he gets to an emotional state in scenes. Simply amazing
The movie was very inaccurate as a story which ruined it, but he was INCREDIBLE as Beethoven, I loved him! No one could have portrayed the composer better.
@@klavdiya9821 Yeah it was innacurate because no one really can make a good biography from a life of a composer that born in 1770 so yeah but i agree the fact that his acting is beyond the cloud on the sky
Exactly my thought!! The scene where he describes the carriage being broken down... Oh man, that scene to this day is still the best visualization of the power of music
Cant believe they did not mention Jackie Flannery , from State of Grace... One of the best and most accurate Character performances of all time ... and what made me a HUGE FAN of Gary Oldman, when no one had hardly heard of him yet .. This man is one of the BEST Actors of our Time .. and since DDL retired, possibly THE Best Living Actor ..Each character so completely different .. I am such a Huge Fan I cant even put it in words ..
I wish he would've talked about Drexl as much as he talked about Oswald. I'd say Gary's performance of Drexl is easily top 5 all time in the history of cinema.
Gary Oldman is definitely one of the best actors of our time, he can cover an endless array of different roles and be intense enough, but not too much, weird enough, but not too much, and always, absolutely always, believable.
This man is too good for the Oscar. A true natural. A supremely gifted actor who becomes his roles. And, he has that "just a workin' bloke" thing that makes his achievements all the more impressive.
Hands down, my favorite actor... Sad they didn't talk about STATE OF GRACE he killed it in that movie.... To kill a movie not using your accent is next level
This is such a cool to see. I've actually been a fan of his since before I even saw him in a movie, lol. That's because I started bingeing movie review books when I was a preteen, and I noticed an actor named Gary Oldman who always got amazing reviews. In my late teens I finally got to start watching his films, starting with True Romance. And it was like a dream come true when he played my favorite Harry Potter character, Sirius Black.

He is a versatile actor. I consider him one of the best actors. There are movie actors who play themselves every time and then you have actors like Oldman who can play batshit crazy but also deliver a more subdued role like him portraying Jim Gordon
That suck because I really liked Sid And Nacy!!!! I watched it when I was real young and it changed my life fore ever!!! I even went as far to become Sid iN my life
