I literally walked in to my local small-town AD 8 months ago, 100% female owned and operated and got a Sub date 41mm just before the yr concluded. I assure you that the advice given in this video is 100% golden advice. I did not have a history with the AD by any means and did not spend any money before or during my wait, but when I got the call, the co-owner remembered my obvious passion for the watch I was seeking and how I interacted with the staff. All of the points presented in this video have serious merit, and at least one of them resulted in my successful acquisition of my grail watch which brings me untold amounts of joy every time I glance at my wrist.

Great video as usual. How I got on the “preferred list”. I took two of my prior long ago purchases (Bluesy Sub and a Wimbledon Date Just) for servicing. Made sure the new manager knew I had purchased these from his long ago predecessor. Got to chatting about various topics. He knew I keep and appreciate Rolex watches and that I would always be in the market for more. 3 months later I got a call and picked up a Panda Daytona. I expressed my appreciation and not long later got a call for a Sky Dweller. Lesson, Relationships, relationships, relationships...

Great content. I walked into an AD I had no purchase history with asking for a steel Submariner and they took my name a number. I didn’t expect a call back after hearing various experiences on RU-vid. Low and behold I received a call 5 months later and now I’m the proud owner for the past 4 months. It was a smaller dealer east of Los Angeles. By the way, your intro is fantastic. 👍🏼

I got myself down on the "waiting list" for a Sub at AD in Toronto suburbs. 3 weeks later I got the call and bought the watch. I guess I got all the bases covered with them LOL.. Before that I was on a waiting list for BB58 at the same AD and the wait was around 6 month. I did get the watch as well. All you said is 100% true. You were practically telling my story. ‘Register of interest’ is a term they use to pacify people, that’s what my AD told me last week. He told me if somebody is on the Register of Interest they probably haven’t even taken their details. I walked straight in and bought an Air King he had in the safe but he admitted he’d told many people he didn’t have one.

You have a few fine points here my friend here in Toronto got a no date sub from one of our ADs the manger of the AD had asked him if he intended to flip the watch he assured the manager that wasn't going to happen. I believe they have stock in the back but sell to people that they can trust not to flip the watches.

It’s great advice. The best point is about buying watches from the same AD over time. I’’ve bought a Hulk and Batgirl over two years from the same AD and she has told me she’s on the look out for my next watch. She knows this guy is gonna be down with payment same day wearing the same watch I sold him last year. That money/commission/honesty (I don’t flip) in AD relationships beats hell out of any “waiting list”. It’s like every time you buy a watch it sets you up for getting your next watch (and there s ALWAYS another watch to buy, lol). Good luck.

Fascinating content from a true ‘insider’ watch collector. I used to be in international sales and it was very interesting talking to watch sales guys at their level all around the world and in airports killing time. Being knowledgeable about watches and putting that passion across can open doors. I was very complimentary to an AD in Seattle who had a great attitude to letting me try on pieces. I complimented them about their great city and all the places I’d visited like the original Starbucks. Also my love for travelling in America and meeting real American characters and how welcoming and hospitable they were. Basically I was just being my charming complimentary self (haha!) and the store manager registered my interest in a Daytona by getting one out of the safe there and then to purchase. Can you fucking believe that? Guys, these days the salesmen hear your waiting list sob story 1,000 times per day and twice that at weekends. Put the hard yards in. One little tip. If the guy likes you and offers you a cup of tea or something stronger *never* turn their hospitality down. Basically it’s an invitation to stay a while and shoot the shit and they are enjoying your company. If you say no and walk away they’ll mutter “asshole” under their breath. I used to...

Man you are spot on. I already had a relationship with the sales person at the AD from a previous watch establishment he used to work at. He told me very honestly that I would have to buy something from them before he could start offering me Rolex pieces. I bought the Longines that I dented and asked him for an Explorer. A month later he let me know he had one and I bought it. Now just waiting on a call for a couple more I am interested in but I am also buying other pieces here and there from him. Just picked up a Bronze Oris a couple weeks ago just to keep it going. Keep up the good work!
@marktime61

I would also add that whilst making a relationship with an AD try to also make it with more than one person and/or their boss. Go to their events to meet their team. Like selling, if your single contact leaves so does a good part of that relationship.. IMO

Yes whilst you will be on their database and if you spend a lot its easy enough to get re aquainted but if you are an occasional buyer you will not be remembered unless you take the effort to get known. Yes, they can be friended and once a charisma is born between you and the manager your watch will be around the corner. I’m saying that from my own experience. I’m not a VIP, nor I’m parking a Porsche or a Ferrari in front of the Rolex boutique, I don’t even had a Rolex when I first entered the store for one a year ago. In one year, I was offered the following: GMT Pepsi, GMT BLNR. Sub date and no date. A Datejust and a Sea Dweller 50th anniversary. The myth of Rolex sport steal is unobtainable is not accurate. Good relationship, friendly approach and charisma can do wonders.

I have a different opinion. Many people say that there's snobbery at Rolex and won't want to have to make an effort to court the sales executives. Everyone always talks about being or acting fake. However you don't have to be fake to establish relationships. Whatever happened to just being friendly. It goes a long way and that's not being "fake"

Good advice here....I’m slowly getting there with my AD, which is lucky as I almost initially messed the whole thing up by pretty much ‘demanding’ they source me a Hulk & Pepsi as ‘I bought my wifes DJ here 2 years ago and if need be ill buy her some jewellery here today!” Omfg what was I thinking!! 🤪 Anyway I realised the error of my ways and ordered the YM 40 (deposit taken 6month wait - its actually come into the AD yesterday after only 6 weeks!) and Im also on a 12 month wait for a Batgirl. So yeah, befriending your AD is highly advised as well as a fair bit of patience. Im also thinking the eventual Sub purchase might go in the bin as just picked up an Omega SMP 300 25% off rrp...What a watch for £3k Love the Channel All the Best Raymond Ray

I agree with your comments and can attest that this has been my experience too. I have been lucky in that I am in a smaller city and my local AD is close to my wife's work and other watch shops that I like to visit. I stop in there often to talk watches and to look at the empty display cases. I developed a relationship with a Sales Associate that has worked there for 20 years and is extremely knowledgeable. I would wear a different watch each time, a lot of pre-owned Rolex and Omega. Now they know me by name, know I am a collector, trust that I am not a flipper, and they want to sell to me. Last year I asked for an Explorer and had to wait 8 weeks, but got it. Then I walked in and asked about a Tudor BB58 blue.... one mysteriously appeared from the back and I walked out with it. Then I asked for a 41mm Sub and had just a 13 day wait. This is all that I've bought, no jewelry, no undesirable watches, just these. At my AD it's all about that relationship that you build with the SA.

Tried on a Pepsi recently used and bought March 2019. Most of the plastic intact and the warranty card present. Seems Rolex are giving the AD the final say on who to ‘trust’ with the piece at the point of sale. Passed on the Pepsi - after all they were asking a sky scraping £17K ono on a £7K list. Kermits (yes plural) and a Hulk now appearing on the used market in High Street windows which is an indicator that some are finally offloading hot steel sports pieces. Some market adjustment but Rolex will endure in the medium to long haul. But interesting times we live in, as ever...

I had a great AD for Cartier and Rolex. That's probably why they lost the contracts with Cartier and Rolex. They gave discounts (15-30%), actually sold watches to anyone, and would call if an interesting piece came in. They did wait lists for rare catalog watches. But you could walk in, say do you have any Rolex Daytonas, and magically from the back room would appear all they had. They were also honest with customers about making realistic expectations about watch collecting.

Developing a relationship with your Rolex Ad is like being in Real Estate. It's sales and in order to get that Listing, or work with a Buyer exclusively, you need to develop a relationship with the client. Build trust. Same thing applies, is what you are telling us. Aside from having the money to buy more than one watch over a period of a year or two ( which not many can do), it's tough. Dropping in from time to time is good and getting to know the Salesperson(s) is good advice but if you can't buy anything, then you have to prey that maybe, your charm, discussing other things besides Rolex Sports models will develop into some kind of (almost) friendship. But this is probably unlikely to produce results because the shop owners will still prioritize the big spenders first.

Why in the world would anyone spend $1 -- let alone thousands or tens of thousands -- on watches they dont want in order to have the opportunity to purchase the watch they do? If you are this stupid and weak and let a manufacturer live this level of rent-free in your head, you are beyond help. Never buy a watch you don't want -- period. Never buy a watch simply as a mechanism to get another watch you prefer. If a manufacturer is holding back production and inventory on purpose to persuade you to spend money on things you dont want for the off-chance they offer you something you do want, they do not deserve your business. Period. Rolex could easily build more steel sports watches, fulfill every single order and all demand, make oodles more profits, and end up leaving both their bottom line happy and more customers happy. But they choose not to. That should tell you all you need to know about what they think of you as a potential customer. I own Porsches. Id like a GT3RS. But if you think Im going to buy a Cayenne and a couple 911 C4 Cabriolets to build up some loyalty equity to get a chance to have an allocation for a GT3RS, you're out of your fucking gourd. Ill go to my grave driving Caymans and older 911s before Porsche cons me into spending 3x as much as I ever wanted for things I never desired just to have something purposely short-supplied for no financial or customer-good-will reason. Rolex isnt the only manufacturer that makes watches. I can happily go to the Sinn, Omega, Zenith, or Nomos dealer and they'll gladly take my money in exchange for the timepiece I want. When the smoke clears, its still just a clock on the arm. You're not buying the fountain of youth.

The Porsche analogy is perfect. My local Porsche dealer is across the street a Flea Market that opens on the weekend (the flea market, the Porsche dealer is closed on Sundays). Every Sunday, there's a bunch of guys huddled around the Porsche dealer parking lot... But the dealership is closed!! Its like an unannounced Cars & Coffee but NO ONE there owns the cars. These guys probably dropped off their wags at the flea market and just hang around the dealership... dreaming. Goddamn saddest sight. I love Porsche but for fucksake, they won't cure cancer or bring world peace.

Here is my story. Bought my wedding ring from local AD, a few years later bought myself an omega aqua tera and my wife a new datejust. I wanted a sub but even then you couldn't just order one. At the same time I had my explorer 2 which I bought used and elsewhere serviced by this same AD. This was all in Jan 2017. Mar/Apr 2019 I lost my wedding ring at the gym and went back to order a new one, at the same time filled in a form registering my interest in the new BLNR, 19th Dec they called and offered me one.

The problem is that to make this relationship you need to have a lot of money to buy your first more normal watches in order to dont wait on the list for the hottest one, so if you are not rich enough if you are like normal people that saves for a hot watch like a sub for example it seems dificult to achieve in a short period of time; maybe during some years is more affordable to have that good relation. I like your content friend! Regards

I would agree with you on the video it’s all about relationships, no different then building a sales relationship with accounts. I would much rather be on the inside vs the outside always looking in. You can’t put a price tag on a relationship, same rings true here. I even called AMEX concierge service about helping me buy a Rolex. They have no influence over the Rolex retail shops.’’retail.

Cheers bud! Great video and much appreciated. I’m on the wait list and I’m not interested in flipping shit. I’m finally in the position where i can buy a Rolex so i don’t mind waiting. I enjoy buying jewelry for the family once in a while. Waiting for a green sub - wish me luck. I just hope they continue to make it next year!

I’m a rather big fella and I convinced the AD even a Datejust didn’t look right on me. So a two tone Everose Yachtmaster was the watch that started the relationship that slowly led to the all stainless models. And even then it was the standard black Sub I was notified if I was interested. But at the moment there are more important people than me getting the Pepsi.

Sounds like good advice but honnestly, I have no time, energy nor inclination for all this protocol. I just want to buy a watch if I have the money for it. Which is not to say I can't be courteous, talkative, dress well and be pleasant overall. Also, I don't want to spend money on other models or articles like jewelry. I'm only interested in two or three Rolex pieces tops. So spending on other unwanted stuff is completely out of the question. I would rather spend my hard earned money, my time and energy on things I really like.

I was thinking the same thing. Buying from an AD and all this protocol sounds so stupid and elitist. This is capitalism. You have a product and I have money, I thought the point of it was to sell? What’s with the exclusivity?

I only buy things I need and want. I talk to people I like, and that are not many. I once went to an Rolex AD and asked for a Submariner 114060 and he responsed with the typical whaitlist shit. I answered "There is no waitlist. And I won't buy watches I don't like." The face of the salesman was priceless. After a few weeks I went back to him with a submariner from my grey market dealer and told him, that I don't need him. I don't have to play this stupid game. A friend of mine tought me that behaviour. He said "In the time I play these game with AD's, I make more money and can buy grey market watch twice."

Every tip given here is valid......but valid in most 2-way relationships. In my business, if the customer is a dick, I don't bother with them. Many small people believe that if they are spending money, that makes it a one-way relationship in their favor. What's funny is, what's described within is exactly my story.....not planned, and some just natural and common sense. I've bought from my AD for 30 years, and been a consistent (friendly) customer. And yes, I get ANY watch I want from them in short order. I've have been offered MANY hard-to-get pieces but have passed on many too......but get unsolicited calls on Daytonas, Blue & Red GMT's etc. They know I NEVER flip and simply enjoy watches.... Within the past couple of years I've purchased the Pepsi GMT and a White SS Daytona. Neither watch was for me so I gave them both to my son and stopped in and had them re-sized. They think it's cool that I wear a DJ-41 or simple Explorer-I 90% of the time.....and don't get too caught up in the frenzy. Thank you...

I'm sure they wouldn't sell me a sports model, but I walked into a very fancy AD in Manhattan yesterday wearing my $200 Orient and asked (just to see what it looked like) if they had any of these. He was nice about it and said they don't last and they go to preferred customers. I was expecting him to be like fuck off, but he showed me around, let me try on as many Omegas and Longines as I wanted. It wasn't busy, so maybe it wouldn't have been as pleasant if more high rollers were in, but they were super nice.

I placed an order for my first Rolex, (a Submariner) in late December of 2019 and got the call in late July of 2020. My strategy was to develop a relationship by sending a quick email on a monthly basis. In your opinion, was this relatively short waiting period a result of my strategy or rather others (ahead of me) wanting to wait for the updated Sub and passing on a 116610LN ?

So to buy a 10K watch you have to be the seller...👏👏👏 It's quite absurd, the world upside down. In my job, every day I have to sell, I am not interested in making any effort to buy a watch and less, what it represents that watches. I already have my Datejust, my Speedy and maybe the next one will be a JLC or a Seamaster 300, sellers of those AD's will be happy to sell them to me and even give me a good discount. That said, good video and excellent channel. Thanks for sharing.

Great advice, the wait lists seem like complete nonsense either they want to get the watch for you for one reason or another or they don't. Yeah, they aren't getting tons in but they are getting them and selling them to whoever they want. Not really that complicated, would you sell a hard to get item to a good customer or some random one and done that happens to walk in?

Ps.Music started to be more for me since i was about 10 years old. From my classmates and all kids there was no understanding, when i showed Hey Joe JH or come together, or whole lotta love some time later that i got on LZ2 from my super mother who saw books same important as lps. She bought books and understood without talking that recorded music was of same importance as books even rock, she bought LedZep 2 for me at sinterklaasparty en after that, every time that was ok for giving something she brought another album. Even if i never told her a title or.band, she.knew. Who has such a mother? Then 1970 at my eleventh was once All Right now on my old tuberadiotuberadio, and after the first playing i heard. I knew what it was foor de the rest of my live. It sounded so ..... that this gave my live long love for bluesorientated rock, but Free is more theres still no excact word for. Free was a little more because ofthe soul in Paul Rodgers voice and all the rest. superbassplaying also and the for me most promesing guitarist Koss unknown the future brought. Different and slow maybe, slow but every note hit bullseye and the born vibrato was even for Clapton reason to ask him how he did it. This is what i write because i have a regognissing if you tell things and need it a lithelbit because at the the end i want to ask you somethimg important about the watch i want to buy, but one for the rest of my life. I believe that the watch for you, that is the rest.of youre life with you and hopfully afterthat you giv it to the one in the familie or maybe a best friend that loves iit the same way, learned or not from your stories, but has the same thing what is the luckiest feeling about holding that watch wat is more a friend because you liked it more every day. The longkeeping can open Knowing Clapton was very busy that time with perfecting his. Maybe you know about the Father of Paul Kossof that made a film during his solotour in memory of his son shortly after the accident in the plane were he died later on in 76 in the hospital with the precence of his father. Yes come eventualy also to the watches but hope you as maybe a bit younger man, are interested in the things that were around those days, just like certain wellknown watches. But what i for sure like to know at the end witch watch do i have to buy ad the only watch that i love more the longer i own it. I think only your way makes it understandable what i mean and that it is not only the watch alone but in a timefraime, thats matters and wich music was mattering. A good long wearing watch is also connected with all historie. Befori heard many times that i lived in the past and it is better looking forward. Why the hell is Vintage synoniem for money thes days? Not only in the watchworld but in all kind of disciplines So much that begin to think that even millenials like vintage more than me and forexamplei bought 1976 nikkormat nikon camera. It was a sale then totaly new but saw them for sake as vintage now. Like an Omega or Rolex qualitie, also for alifelong use and more. Then i feel bit not well that my beloved camera witch shot the Sex Pistols Lou Reed and many historic things. Is also a thing that young people give a feeling they were there, what means that my love for my earlier life is what everybody understands and maybe made people a bit jealous. Instead of dont look back! Gr Ronald
