Inspired by one of the first Rolex watches fitted with the Perpetual rotor, the Rolex Perpetual 1908 is the first member of the Perpetual collection. This new collection is a reinterpretation of traditional watchmaking style imbued with quintessential watchmaking expertise and the aesthetic heritage of Rolex. The 1908 is defined by its design, which conveys the full strength of the watch’s character in the simplicity of the display and by details that confer its unique identity. This timepiece perfectly embodies the spirit of the Perpetual collection, at whose core lies the celebration of the art of watchmaking in its noblest form. The 1908 features a 39 mm case in 18 ct yellow or white gold, with gracious lines and a transparent back that allows the refined aesthetics of the movement to be admired as well as the pivoting of the oscillating weight. The curve of the lugs is highlighted thanks to a gentle chamfering on their top edges. The bezel is divided - the lower part being given an elegant fluting and the upper part domed. Made of virtually scratchproof sapphire, the domed crystal and the transparent case back benefit from an anti-reflective coating. Guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 50 metres (165 feet), the case provides optimal protection for the movement nestled inside.
The 1908 is equipped with calibre 7140, a movement wholly developed and manufactured by Rolex, unveiled this year. A distillation of technology, this self-winding mechanical movement delivers outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, convenience and reliability. Calibre 7140 demonstrates carefully finished aesthetics, notably on the bridges, which feature Rolex Côtes de Genève - a decoration that differs from traditional Côtes de Genève for the slight polished groove between each band.
Calibre 7140 incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement, which combines high energy efficiency with great dependability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, this escapement is resistant to strong magnetic fields. The movement also includes the patented Syloxi hairspring, produced by Rolex. This silicon hairspring has a patented geometry that ensures the calibre’s regularity in any position. The oscillator is mounted on the patented high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers, designed by the brand, which increase the movement’s shock resistance. The oscillating weight is fashioned in 18 ct yellow gold and cut out. It is, furthermore, fitted with an optimized ball bearing.
Calibre 7140 is equipped with a self-winding system via a Perpetual rotor. Thanks to its barrel architecture and the escapement’s superior efficiency, the power reserve of calibre 7140 extends to approximately 66 hours.
The 1908 is fitted on an alligator leather strap. Matt brown or matt black, this elegant strap is individually tailored for the new watch, with a green calfskin lining and tone-on-tone stitching. It is equipped with a Dualclasp, a double folding clasp, in 18 ct yellow or white gold. Thanks to its carefully designed shape, the Dualclasp always sits centred on the wrist.
Like all Rolex watches, the Perpetual 1908 is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. This designation testifies that every watch leaving the brand’s workshops has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories according to its own criteria, following the official certification of the movements by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The in-house certification tests apply to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day - the rate deviation tolerated by the brand for a finished watch is significantly smaller than that accepted by COSC for official certification of the movement alone.
The Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by the green seal that comes with every Rolex watch and is coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

@sergezerkin

Why would you rather get a Breguet or Patek ? It’s not like you are getting a better watch … overall … if you want something real you need pay like 50-80 k … for this price you can only get Patek small second Calatrava … which has terrible finishing …huge lugs which makes it unproportional… overall is just a joke watch to make money for the brand .. you would have to upgrade to the real deal clattava date … but it’s like 40 k new … so at least 14 k euro more … the. You have Breguet yes you can get them for very cheap but then again … they don’t feel special .. the finishing is just like this Rolex or Glashütte … you might as well get Glashütte for 7 k senator excellence … so of course you can go for Lange … but Lange with its case from Sinn … and ugly lugs doesn’t speak to me … but Lange is a whole different watch .. doesn’t look as classy as this one … so overall if you want a good dress watch I think this Rolex is amazing. Unbeatable ( especially with its deployment clasp ) Breguet Patek vacheron all have no answer to this … only Lange with its automatic Saxonia … but it’s like 20 k more and you wait half a year to service it… and also the pricing manipulation- one day they cost 14 in 2 years 30 … in the shop. I’m not a Rolex fanboy. I do like the Oyster perpetual in one or two iterations and the yacht master in rose gold. My problem is that way too many people own a Rolex and it’s just not distinguishing enough as a brand. Unlike better and older watch houses exclusivity is missing. I cannot lie it is a beautiful time piece . This is definitely being pitched as an alternative to the PP Calatrava, the VC patrimony, et al. Personally the Breguet Classique range offers more on many levels.

Considered Richard Lange center seconds, Breguet Classique several models as well as Tradition line, several VC as well as Calatrava, but this is so tempting. I keep asking myself why walk the traditional path when someone is trying to make an inovation. Sure PP would be the no brainer for a dress watch, but the new syloxi hairspring shape looks so promising! An accurate durable and reasonable maintenance cost dress oriented gold watch. Sounds like something that would be appreciated in the far future, whereas the no-brainer of today would only be a museum piece. I am really falling for this!

Great video as usual Alexander 👌 BTW Rolex has recently filed a patent titled "Inertial element for watch movement, resistant to magnetic field" claiming that this component will be resistant to magnetic fields greater than 35000 gauss, which IMHO is a direct response to Omega's 15000 gauss antimagntetism. @@WatchAdvisor I don't know but they certainly have a history of starting and stopping dress watch lines over the years as they never get traction like the steel sports, OPs, date just, date date. They are are now timeless classics considered the paradigms in their segments. @WatchAdvisor
@WatchAdvisor Год назад
Of course the majority of the decoration is done by a machine... the latter simply is more perfect, makes no mistakes... all watches manufacturers use them, also the very top ones ... @jonandresen1483 Год назад
@@WatchAdvisor Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder but, for example, can get legit hand finishing from Blancpain for less money, partially hand finished movements from JLC look better, the new style Grand Seiko movements are at least on par for less money, the Moser movements look better...and this Rolex is encroaching on Lange money--certainly can get pre-owned Lange for less and well, that is not a contest. So, for a $20,000 luxury dress watch the finishing is minimally acceptable. This is to say nothing of independents like Laine and others that offer true hand work for less money. It's great that Rolex made an effort, I'm not a hater, but I'm not alone in not being super impressed with the extent of the movement finishing for the money. It has that look of being both nicely finished and having concessions to mass production appearance. One typically does not buy Rolex for movement finishing, they are a precision industrial watch company and a solid gold caseback is more in keeping with company identity. My opinion only.

@oysterman962
@oysterman962 Год назад
@@WatchAdvisor The fruit comparison applies more to the buyer than the watch. I am a Rolex fan & collector but I would not consider this because of the price. I do like dress watches but they don't represent value. It's 3 times more expensive than a gold bezel Datejust. The specs do not indicate this is 3 times a better watch. In fact, less power reserve and water resistance than the DJ but same +/-2 accuracy. Rolex has deliberately not mentioned that it's hand finished in anyway, therefore we can assume it's machine tooled & finished. The mechanism still has silicon Syloxi hairspring, Chronergy escapement & Paraflex shock absorbers. All found in the Datejust. If this watch was offered with a solid caseback option priced at $10k -$15K then they might have a larger audience. But whoever buys this at $20k plus is ill informed and probably a social media marketing victim with no technical knowledge. I also think the design is a bit too spartan. Dauphine hands and arrow hour markers could improve the negative space for such a large diameter dress watch. As it is it reminds me of a child's stick drawing of a man. Seriously, with your knowledge & options available, would you buy one? I think we are comparing grapes with raisins when comparing to quality offered by the competition. I would even suggest a steel Sky-Dweller with white gold bezel on a jubilee bracelet is cheaper, infinitely more complicated & better value than the 1908.
@WatchAdvisor

@@oysterman962 Yes, I would buy it! Why? @oysterman962
@oysterman962 Год назад
@@WatchAdvisor I think your mention of Omega as having comparable anti magnetism has already lost the battle for Rolex in terms of value here. I can't find the specs on the gauss rating, but I think it's not necessary to over engineer a dress watch in any case unless you're a nuclear scientist or work in a magnetic factory and you decide to buy a 1908 because you can't buy a Milgauss anymore, but you'd probably be wiser to buy an Omega in that scenario anyway. Nonetheless, having ultra anti magnetism on your dress watch is as superfluous as a fund Manager wearing a 500m waterproof watch which won't see much more than a coffee spill, which makes sense that your keyboard should be more water resistant than your watch! More likely though, the buyer for the 1908 will just be wearing it during light desk duties, for which any regular Rolex will do the job at less than half the price. Personally, I would prefer the Cellini with dual time complication or moonphase. Tech specs aside, design and aesthetics is subjective to one's personal tastes. The 1908 has nothing special in terms of enamelling or guilloche of the dial or caseback; not even blueing of screws or hands. I would happily settle for a JLC, Grand Seiko or dare I mention it, Omega!! Squint and it looks nothing more than a Federique Constant to the high powered woman wearing a pinstripe suit and diamond dial two tone Datejust sitting opposite to me in the boardroom, thinking she'll have my job. Looking on the positive side, at least it will save me the scandal in the morning considering she would refuse to follow me home unless I was wearing a Patek worth pinching. But.. anyway, although I can't agree with you on this Rolex being a good value purchase, I respect your opinion and devotion to the content you provide. At least it's not boring and you challenge opposition, which always makes for an interesting debate. That's why we love watches and have different tastes. Time will tell whether the 1908 is successful, although I highly doubt it. My conclusion after seeing the Morgan Stanley sales report is that technical innovation of brands account for nothing. It all comes down to marketing and social media hype. Credit should be awarded where credit is due, I hope one day, less popular dress watches from brands like Breguet and JLC are heralded for their watchmaking & superior technical innovations, more than marketing social media hype of Rolex. You see it year after year that Rolex just needs to change the dial colour or switch the crown to the left side. The watch media & enthusiasts go crazy. Meanwhile JLC introduces a Reverso that chimes and tells the time in another universe, yet it's forgotten soon after it's release. Whereas the colour dial of the Rolex will be be most desired for years to come. Good luck with your 1908 purchase. I'm off to buy 10 ounces of gold bullion with my savings.
