I have a 1987 Day-Date 1804 (champagne dial with diamond markers, bezel and bracelet) that’s pretty much a family heir loom at this point. It belonged to my late grandfather, then was passed on to my dad, then to my mom, then back to my dad again when my mom died. He’s handing it to me when I sell my first piece of property as a real estate agent. And get this: It still works perfectly fine even after 35 years without a service.

I recently purchased the same watch but with a smooth bezel, which is a rare version of this reference. It is my first PM watch and I absolutely love it. Something about the weight on the wrist makes it feel like nothing else. I wear it with a T shirt and jeans and it actually down plays very well. Wearing a gold watch is all about attitude. Don't be a douche bag and its just another watch. I think most people assume its fake or a gold plated fashion watch anyway. For the money, I think it has the best quality to cost ratio out there.

Back when I knew nothing about watches other than knowing Rolex was thee watch brand...this Day/Date gold president was what popped in my mind. Now I didn't know it was called a Day Date...I assumed this was the only thing Rolex had and it was a rich man's watch.

I looked at the next iteration 6-digit model with the Chronergy movement 3255 from @baselworld 2015 before I eventually got the 18ct white Gold GMT-Master II ‘Pepsi’ 116719BLRO. The 6-digit references also had ceramic pins in the President bracelet to prevent or delay bracelet stretch. Apparently as there is no micro-adjustment in the hidden Crown clasp you have to buy an extra link for summer, or if your wrist swells, at £650. Having never tried on a Gold watch before, it blew my mind a bit. The dials were the laser etched diagonal motif; or stripe motif in various colours. If money were no object, I would get the Platinum Day Date 40 Ref: 228206 with ice blue ‘Platinum specific’ diagonal motif dial and lumed battons. It is £9,500 at £48,250 cheaper than the Platinum Daytona 116506. £57,750, so better ‘value.’ There was the larger 41mm Day-Date II prior to the Day-Date 40 but it was discontinued as it looked odd; like the Datejust II, with the case and bezel proportions off. When you were last on; some months ago; I was looking at your Panerai progression video as I know very little about them. I liked the new carbon Submersible from SIHH 2019 with solid blocks of super-Luminova and there is one model variant line without the odd looking ‘iconic’ crown closure system, I dislike as ungainly looking. I know a little bit about Panerai in that Rolex originally provided movements for them in WWII; but commentators say they lose money on the secondary market; but ALL watches do, I discovered this when I had to sell the 116719BLRIO and I lost £7K on it and should never have bought it really.

Unfortunately, it reminded me of an A-hole I worked for who wore a gold President with a diamond bezel. He was too cheap to service his watch. So, it was always if by several minutes. He was the richest person I have known and the most miserable person I ever met. But, he was willing to share his misery!💔

You’re right , it’s not a subtle watch. For me it symbolises ostentatious excess, vanity, 80’s bad taste. If you have that sort of money buy a patek

Stainless Patek or 18ct Rolex. I'd choose the 18 ct Rolex everytime as they are expensive; ut the best value-for-money Gold watch built like a tank out there. You can't get Patek and there is a x3 premium worse than buying a Batman or Hulk.

culturehorse I think he was referring to the MSRP of the modern Day-Date 40 which is £26,750 ($33,438) for the 18 ct yellow Gold version and £28,850 ($36,062) for the 18 ct white Gold or 18 ct Everose (Pink Gold) versions as they contain Platinum in the alloy.
