The Rolex Sea-Dweller is a niche watch, but represents arguably the most interesting bits of history when it comes to dive watches from the historic brand. There's a lot more to this story now live over at The Deep Track: thedeeptrack.c...

I have 3 Sea Dwellers - One bashed up 16600 that I wear with zero f***s given - Wear it anywhere in London - The watch could still survive a war. A second mint condition 16600 with a Tritium dial full set from 93 and a 116600 SD4k. Love the 40mm Sea Dwellers! They have a slightly smaller dial than the equivalent subs so wear just that bit better on a 7inch or smaller wrist. The SD4K is perfection - Strikes the right balance between modern and Neo-vintage - 6 Digit build quality, ceramic fully markered bezel, maxi dial, matt / satin dial, glide lock, 40mm case, 3135 movement with parachrom, date with no cyclops and limited production run - The last real tool watch Rolex made.

Compare to Porsche the Submariner is the 911 Carrera and the the Sea Dweller is the GT3RS.

touche! agreed completely, the sea dweller has always been the hardcore version of the submariner.

My (very generous) wife bought me a Sea-Dweller 16600 for my 35th birthday (almost 20 years ago, back when you could walk into an AD and take your pick of Rolex SS sports watches…). Still my favourite watch - it was special then and it’s still special. It was a close call between that and the no-date Sub. But I’m glad I went with the Big Dog. It’s been diving with me. It’s a bit scratched up and it’s all the better for it. #toolwatch 🙂

How much should be a tritium dial full set from 1995 in acceptable conditions with a peeling bezel ?
@TheDeepTrack
@TheDeepTrack Месяц назад
That depends on the case condition, but if it's crisp I'd say anywhere between $9 and 11k. The bezel is less important, however, if it is literally peeling I'd be concerned about the overall authenticity.

thanks for the interesting video, somehow I like these more than a sub from the same era.

What is the ‘baggage’ with the modern Rolex dive watches you reference? Pretentiousness?
@TheDeepTrack
@TheDeepTrack 4 месяца назад
Maybe baggage is the wrong word... but by that I mean that they are largely viewed as luxury jewelry, rather than straight tool watches, thanks to their slightly bigger/flashier personalities. They still make very capable watches of course, but that's the kind of persona that wasn't attached as heavily to the 5 digit references.

Great review, I have this reference and the 43mm reference and both wear amazing! I’d be hard pressed to have to choose between them cause they both get equal wrist time 🤔

Great Review Blake! The Seadweller has been my favorite Rolex for a long while now. Recently, I’ve started thinking of picking up a 16660 to celebrate a few milestones. What are the main points that drew you to the 16600 over the Triple 6?
@TheDeepTrack
@TheDeepTrack Месяц назад
Thanks! As much as I like the 16660, my general preference with five digit references is to go newer for their often improved wearability. Solid end links and tighter bracelets, updated movements in some cases... the kinds of things that make them more everyday wearable to me. Late '80s and early '90s examples have tendency to feel a bit older, and as a result, more fragile. Nothing wrong with this, but for me, it it gives me pause on whether it'll hold up in whatever I may be doing that day. Because of this, I usually look for the latest examples I can find that still use lug holes. As for transitional references, the 16660 and 16800 are two particular favorites, though! I'd welcome either in my box.

Great review, really liked the intro. 5-digits are just the way to go. What puts me of from modern seadweller is the cyclops. the 16600 kind of gives back the symmetry a no date sub would have.

can you fit a modern Rolex bracelet to a 16600?
@TheDeepTrack
@TheDeepTrack 4 месяца назад
I don't believe so due to the way the end link marries up with the case wall inside the lug, but I'll double check.

I am not. Just open water.
@edjack1993
@edjack1993 3 месяца назад
Neither am I. But I am a diver and I have dived with my 16600 (28m - really stress tested it 😂). I get what you are saying: it is a ludicrously over-engineered watch for its use-case. But so is a Ferrari - massively more capable than 99% of its users. Nevertheless, it still a piece of engineering to appreciate.

How bigger is dweller compared to submariner?
@TheDeepTrack
@TheDeepTrack 4 месяца назад
From the generation of this 16600, the 14060 Submariner is the same 40mm in diameter, but is about 2.5mm thinner.
