As a diver myself, this was the only watch I ever lusted over. It took me 35 years, but in 2019, on my anniversary at my local AD , a 114060 appeared straight out of the vault. It was still in its plastic shipping box and had never been in the show case. No one had even tried it on. I will never sell it and someday will pass it on to my son.

I still adore the 114060, in fact I'm wearing it today. It's such a good watch it makes me wonder why I would wear anything else.

I was fortunate enough to pick up a 114060 at my AD back in January 2017 before all the crazy hype in SS Rolex's. It still looks a lot better than the newer no date version. The beefier lugs just has that wow factor to it. Cheers from Seattle, WA.

I could not agree more. I was disappointed by the new version of the Sub and so pleased I purchased my own 114060 in 2019. Interestingly, I was visiting a local AD over the weekend and they mentioned they have had much larger supplies of the new Sub than they ever achieved of the old models. Perhaps things are changing.

Its the rugged simplicity of the original NO date Submariner, that makes it one of the most iconic watches that it is. No unnecessary frills or gimmicks, such as an unnecessary date window, or sub dials, to clutter the appearance. All it does, is tell its owner the time, nothing else, because nothing else matters. If your very fortunate, you might get that call from your AD, after years in the waiting, but if you don't then pay a premium to own one. Its one of the best long term investments you can make,

I have the same watch 114060 I agree you need to be careful in certain areas I dont think its flies underneath the radar, I think it is very noticeable....especially on smaller wrist. Just because people dont come up to you and ask you about it, doesnt mean its going unnoticed. The pre ceramic probably is less noticeable. It s unfortunate, but I used to wear it all the time, now I'm very cautious as crime has increased in US as to where and when I wear it.

After 7 years of studying physics and mathematicd while working at a supermarket, I started working as a teacher and I was finally able to buy my first luxury watch. I narrowed it down to the Rolex Milgauss (quite fitting for a physicst) or a Submariner Date. I went for a pre-owned Submariner, since I am a rowing-instructor. It has been 11 years and it has been a loyal companion ever since.

A really interesting story of your Rolex experience - the thing I like the most about the company is that they used to be British based until they moved to Switzerland. Personally my only Sub style watch is a Longines Hydroconquest, but that works perfectly fine for me to be honest (not that I’d ever be able to afford your Rolex of course)
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 4 года назад
Thats a great point and often overlooked in the Rolex story. I believe that they moved for tax purposes, but Wilsdorf remained a committed anglophile for the duration of his life, which is symbolised by the Rolex crown logo and Tudor name being selected due to his appreciation and fascination with monarchy.

I enjoyed your video very much, and I agree with you 99%. I bought my 114060 in march 2019, so few months earlier than you, and have worn it ever since happily. The only doubt I haven now is about swapping it with the new no-date model just released, which looks perhaps a bit more proportioned as regards the refined lugs. You're right that they look very similar, don't even notice it's 41mm, but in our model I feel more the square-with-inscribed-a-circle effect due to the fat lugs. The new one has a larger bracelet though, which makes it perhaps less comfortable, so I am really uncertain about what to do. Thanks again for you insightful video.

Thanks for comments. I was at my AD on the weekend to place an order for my next watch and we had a nice chat about the new Sub. They had been swamped by enquiries over the new models since Sept 1st, he estimated over 500 genuine enquiries were taken and at the rate of expected flow of Subs, this would mean a 10-year wait list for some clients. That said, he mentioned the initial delivery from Rolex of Subs, both black and green bezel, had been much more numerous than previous batches that they had received - this was attributed to increased flow after the factory shutdown, or, a big push for the new models from the factory, but more watches than would normally be expected have arrived for delivery to customers. The new model is barely discernible from the old Sub to my eye, the 1mm increase is practically unnoticeable and the variation to the lug width is also only modestly discernible - certainly it would take a knowledgeable person with good eyesight to spot the difference. In any event, if you are interested in trading yours in for a new model, best get in line quickly, or you may have to wait a few years to see a new Sub.

Great video Ash. I have had a couple of "Date complication" automatics, and one Tag Day-date, and it was a bit of a pain to get it adjusted damn near every time I put it on, which was like once or twice a week so it would always run down! Seems petty, but it is a good point and my next Rolex is going to be a no-date model. Nice comments on EP Malorey as well, I am dealing with them too. Very professional and knowledgeable chap who I will not name here, but you know who I am referring to! Once again, thanks for this episode!

Ah, the non-datey Sub! I have owned two 114060s: the first one I got at retail, wore it regularly for a couple of years, then sold it (making a bit!) Seller's regret kicked in, so I bought one pre-owned, which I did eventually sell too. Now I'm waiting for the newly updated 124060 at my local AD. (I've bought Rolex, Tudor and Patek Philippe from them - most recently a GMT2 BLNR - so I'm confident they'll actually deliver the goods in due time.)

I'm still loving the Sub, its my go-to watch for most occasions and is so robust and tough it is definitely the ultimate zombie apocalypse survival watch. Good luck with your new Sub, hope it comes swiftly. Sounds like you have a very nice collection of other pieces to choose from there too. How goes the BLNR? I recently purchased a CHNR and have to day I'm loving its look and practicality.
@j.burgess4459
@j.burgess4459 3 года назад
@@TheChapsGuide The BLNR is surprisingly good. I was always skeptical about the jubilee bracelet, but I have to say it's a brilliant fit. I wasn't even on a firm waiting list, I had just mentioned some months back to Tom at (*******) that it was a reference I might be interested in. Then, a few days before they reopened after the second lockdown, I suddenly got a call from him saying he had one and it was mine if I wanted. I actually hesitated - believe it or not. But then I said: "oh well, you can't very well say 'no' to a steel Rolex". I think they thought it was quite funny. When I went to collect they were saying "we're really glad you made the right decision!" :-D (Edited)
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 3 года назад
You are very fortunate indeed to have a BLNR offered to you, my cousin recently purchased one from WoS in Cardiff for his 40th birthday and had a lengthy wait. Sadly I Mallorys were unable to source a CHNR for me in the timeframe I was looking for (for my retirement), so I picked mine up at Goldsmiths in Bristol. I was sad to break my relationship with Mallorys, especially after experiencing their superb service over the last few years, but it all comes down to supply these days I guess. Hopefully I'll be back to visit them again when Rolex or Tudor release something I fancy. The jubliee is possibly my all-time favourite watch bracelet, I have a DJ36 on a jubilee and it remains possibly my all-time favourite Rolex watch in regards to appearance and history. Enjoy that BLNR is great health. Best regards, Ash

@@TheChapsGuide I’m 100% sure they won’t in any way hold it against you that you got the GMT from Goldsmiths. (*******) have me down for one of the new Subs, saying that it’s likely to take anything up to a year. But they also said, if I can get one from elsewhere sooner, it‘s no problem at all for them - as long as I tell them so they can keep their lists up to date. Tip: buy Patek Philippe - that way they‘ll treat you like a rockstar every time you go in! (Edited)
@j.burgess4459
@j.burgess4459 3 года назад
@@TheChapsGuide BTW yes, I think I was extremely fortunate to get the BLNR! Tom did say, when I picked it up, that they have now closed the lists - even for good local customers, priority clients, etc. I don‘t know how it happened for me - but I suspect that they had one going spare because a couple of people had dropped off of the list (died, moved away, no longer wanted to buy, etc.)

Nice video. I rather enjoyed that a lot. You’re a good bloke. I’m not as well to do as you, but the black dial sub is my second grail watch (first in terms of price). I’ve been thinking about my first luxury piece for awhile now. An Omega Speedmaster Pro Moonwatch, which is only half the price of a used sub. Although I have the cash for it, I never went in on it just due to the times. I’m working and never ceased working because of the pandemic, but one never knows when the well will dry up, so I’m protecting my savings short term until I get a clear sign of where things are headed. Great video though.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 4 года назад
A wise course of action indeed sir, after all, no one really needs a luxury watch. It is a fully unnecessary item in all reality and best reserved for times when the world is more settled. I stated my watch journey only 2-years ago after a lifetime of saving and careful living, I finally decided to treat myself before my working life was too short to allow me to buy one (I am not a wealthy man by any means - just got a normal job, I'm just good at saving). I really like Omega, a brand with an even better heritage than Rolex in almost all respects, they are just not as good at marketing their brand. The Moonwatch is perhaps the only chrono I would ever be tempted by - it is an ICON!
@ianarn
@ianarn 4 года назад
The Chap's Guide The Moonwatch is the only Chrono that could tempt you Ash? I had my eyes on a Tudor Heritage Chrono Blue Monte Carlo! Now that really was temptation! Your point about being concerned about size is a valid concern as I’m always worried that a watch i buy could look clownishly big and make my arm appear small as a result.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 4 года назад
Ah, the Tudor is a nice piece. To be frank, I'm not a huge fan of chronos, as I feel I would have no real use for the complication in my life (clearly I make use of the capacities of my Sub all the time - not). Seriously though, a chrono would be a huge luxury for me, as I have not settled for a 3-watch collection and will not stray beyond that without moving on an existing member of the current trio. I agree with your thoughts on size, as I have a smallish 6.5 in wrist, I am acutely aware that the current trend towards ever larger watches for men is leaving me behind somewhat. My favourite watch is my 36mm Datejust, which is just a simple and somewhat old fashioned watch, but perfectly proportioned for my wrist. I've always thought of the watch as an unobtrusive accessory, but with these 43mm and above monsters becoming more commonplace, they are dominating a gentleman's appearance. I hope the trends will reverse, but with Rolex moving up in size in all it's ranges, I cant see it anytime soon.

Respectfully, watches are not investments. True investments generate dividends; otherwise, if an asset is held as a financial asset, it is either money, insurance, or speculation. Despite the relative stability in the Rolex market, those who are holding Rolex watches as part of a financial portfolio, or who are depending on the watch’s market performance, are sheer speculators.

Not at all, in fact, I have become even more appreciative of time-only watches and have ordered an Explorer 1, which has attracted me due to its time-only format. Whilst I have a date on my 2 GMT watches and my Datejust, there is something I really like about a fully symmetrical watch, especially a tool watch, which in all reality does not need a date function on a dive watch.

Ian Fleming only ever described Bond’s watch as a Rolex Oyster Perpetual, never a Submariner. Fleming himself wore a Rolex explorer, so maybe he had his fictional alter ego wear an explorer as well. On the belt and braces principal, I have an explorer and a sub.

@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 3 года назад
A tough choice to make - depends on your lifestyle and personal taste. The BB58 is hard to beat for value for money and classic style. The Exp 1 is classically elegant (although I preferred the 36mm variant) and the Air KIng is quite unusual in many ways - possibly a classic of the future, but certainly a rugged and robust Rolex. For me, the BB58 offers the best look and a formidable price (plus Rolex-level quality) - plus you can actually buy them from shops without a wait of several months. Whichever you choose, enjoy it in the best of health!

@chalmers_duvet Год назад
My take on the Bond angle is that the juxtaposition of him wearing a dive watch under the sleeve of a tux or suit is less of a style thing that should be copied by us non-Bond types and more of a literary indication of the nature of his character. He looks like a well mannered gentleman of society, but just underneath the surface he's a man of action. He might go from a cocktail event on dry land to trying to infiltrate the yacht of an arms dealer out in the bay all in the same evening!
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide Год назад
I think you have nailed the reason why that juxtaposition between luxury and utility has become some very popular in modern culture and style. Bond is perhaps the first pioneer of this ideology.
