I agree with you about the new cases of the Rolex: they are too big and chubby, they give a look too rough to the watches. I also prefer the aesthetics of the vintages over that of the new ones.
oscar gustavo arcos ruiz the new ones look square...once seen it can’t be unseen....Jody on ‘Just One More Watch’ did a video on this and it’s so obvious what looks best!!!
You're right. I also went back and wear the old GMT version. However, with the new models, the 70-hour versions have a lot of problems specially with the wheels broken and service every 2-3 years. Rolexes after 2019 do not have the same accuracy as the old ones. Luxury has come at the expense of quality. The old ones are real workhorses.
I have a couple with plastic crystals, stamped clasp and hollow end links on my older Rolex's. Check on The servicing cost. If it is to old Rolex will not touch it. The cost of service for two is Humbling. I would just buy a Pre-owned Invicta or Aragon with ETA's on E-bay for next to nothing and put the 10 K or so in the stock market. Great Video and Thanks for sharing.
Great video. IMHO the attraction to vintage Rolex (I have a 14270 for the same reasons) is that they come ascross as more authentic and genuine. They were built with a purpose in mind. A bit "less is more" appeal. Wear them in good health. Cheers
just got my 16700 U serial 2 weeks ago. love it. It's funny because my dealer had the 5 digit Sea Dweller and the Pepsi for sale and you have examples of the 5 digit no date Sub and the Pepsi in this video. I chose the GMT, as it is my grail. But they used to wear so much better, including the chunkier Sea Dweller. The super case is just too much like a hunk of metal on the wrist. Newer Rolexes are still very capable watches, but they are out of touch with their roots.
Very interesting thoughts on these iconic watches, not that I will ever buy one. Too much for me, sadly. I really like your original piece, just class!
How do you find the 14060 compared to the 16700? Does it wear bigger or smaller? Do you end up wearing the 14060 more because it is less busy / flashy than the 16700? I have a 16700 and considering getting a 14060
Hi. I wear the 16700 the most. Later I sold the 14060 and last year I got a 16613 two tone. The two tone is very different in wear to the 16700 and 14060.
I agree with your points. I have purchased a few older "5 digit" Rolexes over the last two years. I also prefer them to the newer models, but I couldn't get a newer model if I wanted to anyway! Another point to me is that the newer models are less versatile. Those big, broad lugs makes the watch only look good on the original bracelet. You don't see modern Subs on a nato or leather strap because they just don't look right with poor transition from the lugs to the strap. With the better lug taper on the older Subs this is not an issue. Also, everyone hails the new bracelet clasps as being awesome, which technically they are. However, they are also significantly heavier, thicker, and bulkier. If you work at a keyboard a good part of the day, that clasp can be terrible. I would take the thin, light clasp on my GMT 16710 any day over the newer clasps. Bottom line, I think Rolex made a marketing choice with the design of the new models. They are thicker, wider, heavier, and bulkier than the old models, including the watch head, bracelet, and clasp. This gives the buyer a feeling of better quality and value as the pieces are definitely more substantial. That is marketing to the masses. Others, like you, appreciate the finer, more classic proportions of the older models. Neither is right or wrong, in the end buy what you like - unless it's a new model, then good luck even finding one to buy! :-)
Hi Kirk. I never thought about the thing with NATO straps on old and new Rolex but it’s very true. Wearing a new maxi case Rolex on a NATO is not really an option because it’s so thick. Best regards, Anders
Very good video. I agree with you on what you said. The currant Submariner with the maxi case looks odd. I think it’s beacause they have a very harsh-looking case with there traditional dial with the round markers and thin Mercedes hands. The cyclops also looks very out of place on the currant Submariner. You Rolex’s are very nice. That Submariner is what so many companies Homage. The case actually reminded me of the Gycline Combat Sub, as it is very thin. Good luck clnon your Future Rolex purchases.
I agree the Rolex prices have gone crazy, I wanted the fat lady coke full set , no way could I pay the money, the 116710blnr I bought was brand new, with 10 total year warranty and around $1,500 cheaper . I like older Rolex but I think , in this market, it may be smarter to either wait, or buy new .
