As pilot, I bought my first Rolex GMT master 2 (Coke) in 1998, I wore the watch continuously for 18 years, never being let down! I saw the Batman and fell in love the the blue and black, being more representative of day and night and popped into the AD here in Qatar. I walked out with the Batman and it’s been a daily wearer since, it also lead me down the rabbit hole of watch collecting, where will it stop 😅 thanks for the video….

From someone who's had both watches (126710BLRO and the 124060) I decided to sell my Submariner only because the GMT Master offers so much more - beautiful iconic bezel, date and GMT function, can be dressed up and down if you have it on the jubilee, bezel can be used to time like the Sub. I'm genuinely shocked you went with the Sub especially with everything you've said against it like how it's the most replicated watch in the world.
@Nmh2el
@Nmh2el 4 месяца назад
The GMT just doesn’t make sense in a small collection, nor in a single watch collection. It’s way too blingy as a single watch collection, yet it tries to cover way too many areas without excelling in any in a small watch collection. People try to treat the GMT as an industrial tool watch one day, and as a dress watch the other. Even at msrp you could basically get a new 124060 and a SBGW231 at grey, and cover both the need for a tool and dress watch much better.

Great video again and thank you for this cool comparison. I’m a few steps ahead trying to get on a list from my local AD since these models are incredibly sought after. In this process I had the same feelings about the Sub that you are expressing. On the other hand, the Sub is the watch everyone knows and the entry Rolex for all young consultants I know that just want to brag and are not really into watches. This is why I will probably try to get my hands on a GMT Batgirl since it has a great heritage as well, is not the Pepsi, has a useful complication and is at least one step above entry consultant watch. So far my argumentation for myself. Problem: the market says I won’t get either and sit at Omega in a few month. Greetings from Austria/Germany.

Hello Mr Chap! I'm a Brit' living in Virginia, USA. I have the Pepsi GMT Master II, with Jubilee bracelet and the Black on Black GMT Master II - with the Oyster bracelet. The last one is constantly mistaken for the Sub. While the 300m depth of the Sub is fantastic, the 100m depth of the GMT is way more than sufficient for a normal person's use. To be honest, the Black on Black can be worn in more situations than the Pepsi. It's just more subtle. Thank you for your channel. I miss the British accent over here! Peter

I agree. My first Rolex was a Sub in 1978. I got a job which required a suit a couple of years later and traded for a Datejust. Fast forward 40 years later and I got a new ceramic Sub. Love it. I got the call from an AD on the Batman and picked it up. Fantastic watch but ultimately I got rid of it. I’m seldom traveling through international time zones any more so don’t need the GMT function. I’m not a fan of the cyclops, I love the glide lock oyster. I love the non PCL Oyster. The GMT is a dressier watch and I’m not that guy anymore. I’m more often in remote locales getting dirty. I have to agree with the Chap!

Breitling Chronomat GMT: 200m, date, gmt, lume pip bezel (bidirectional 3rd time zone or unidirectional diver), chronograph, and you can retrofit the bracelet to have an adjustable clasp. Such an interesting comparison and I’m not surprised at your decision however I disagree that the Pepsi is less rugged I think they’re both take-anywhere watches. If I had to keep one it’d be the sub and ONLY because of the glide lock clasp it really does make the watch fit perfectly all the time which is so important for me especially as it’s quite a chunky watch and I’ve got thin wrists.

Owning a Batgirl GMT2, Fluted bezel blue Datejust 2 and a Panda Daytona, I opted for the Submariner’s poor cousin…the Pelagos 39 for a couple of reasons. The Sub is heavier…the Tudor in titanium less so. The Sub is comfortable…the Tudor a bit more so. The Sub is a bit trickier to acquire…the Tudor a bit less so. The only downside is the lume on the Tudor’s minute hand is more a concept than a reality…whereas the Sub’s lume is flawless and sun-surface bright for a considerable number or dark hours. Lovely comparison and yours is very high quality work sir…as is consistently the case. Cheero.

Forgive me Ash if I missed it, but I didn't hear you mention a major (IMO) feature that the GMT possesses that is absent on the Sub, and that is the 'jumping hour hand'. This is a deal breaker for me in favour of the GMT as it is so convenient to be able to change the hour hand without disturbing the minute hand which of course means resetting the time. I want function over looks and for that reason it's the GMT for me.

The Rolex dealer experience has taken the fun out of Rolex ownership for me. I went into an AD to put my name down on “the waitlist”, I popped in 5 months later only to find they hadn’t recorded my interest, they then made sure I was on the list: that was about 2 years ago, so that’s nearly 2.5 years (and counting) waiting to be able to purchase an entry level Oyster Perpetual 36 black. The last time I was in an AD, the assistant was surly & condescending, so the brand & their ADs aren’t really living up to the luxury purchasing experience.

You only can sell them at a lost as these 2 watches are the only ones going up on the watch index. End of! Also dont wear either of these in London especially the pepsi!

I’ve owned both and now I just own the Sub. The bezel is much more useful on a daily basis, I think the case is nicer (41mm Sub), more comfortable, and glidelock. The Pepsi is cool because you get the color and it’s a lot rarer in the wild but I have a white gold Sub, so I get my color and almost no one owns it.

I’m 72 yrs. Old and have been wearing a Pepsi since October 1967. I have a 2022 Pepsi and a 2022 sub. For me it’s the GMT. The GMT does everything the sub does. I lap swim five days a week with my GMT. Rolex’s are VERY waterproof weather it’s a day date or the other 100 meter watches. For me the sub is very boring next to my GMT. Even my All black bezel GMT is more tasteful than my sub. Soon as my AD rings me that a Daytona came in. The sub is gone. The best watch on your wrist is one that runs.

Very easy choice. GMT Master II. I was offered a Submariner by my local AD (who after a year of trying to get a specific watch, I gave up completely trying to buy anything from there). In this case, I came in just after a customer declined the Submariner he had ordered. The sales associate that worked at the AD offered it to me. I had never asked for one nor shown any interest. I politely thanked him and then declined. His look was priceless. That was 2021. That year I got a Batman on jubilee from one AD and in 2022 got a Pepsi on jubilee from another. It was a fun and expensive couple years.

My Batman is my daily watch. It’s great! A bit more understated than the Pepsi. A little classier, I think. I also have the Sprite which is quite whimsical and one you don’t see often. I opted for the Sea Dweller over the Sub because it’s like the Sub on steroids. Great watch.

I own both as well (41mm Sub and BLNR) and I would actually say the GMT has better tool watch bonafides. An airline literally asked Rolex to develop the watch for their pilots and worked together with them to do so. That's about as tool-y as it gets. I'm also surprised by how few of the GMT I see out in the wild, while I see the Sub all the time. Of course the flip side to that is the GMT is a watch that stands out a lot more and is a lot more noticeable, which might not be ideal. Having said that, I would agree with you that I'd take the Sub if I had to choose one. The glidelock makes it easier to dial in a perfect fit whenever and wherever I am. And I like the fact that it blends in more, makes me less self-conscious about wearing it. It kinda disappears on my wrist. And because they sized it up a bit (esp the bracelet) with the 41mm, it just feels like a tougher and more durable watch.

I'm hoping at Watches and Wonders they release the Root Beer on a Jubilee bracelet. I'm going to get the Root Beer after April even if it remains on the Oyster! It's a beautiful watch, and I can't wait to make it my very first luxury watch purchase. It's going to memorialize the first 2.5 years of my successful business, and also to celebrate the birth of my son come June.

Ash, one thing I haven’t heard mentioned is the cost of upkeep on an automatic watch. I wouldn’t suggest wearing a watch of this caliber in the water unless it is less than 5 years since its last service. With this comes the cost, I just had my submariner serviced at a cost of $1000. Mine was in good condition and they only replaced the main spring and seals along with the teardown and cleaning. If water gets into the movement, the cost for repair can be more than the watch is worth.

I have both. Glidelock is literally SO superior to the adjustments on the BLRO. I always feel like I am a half size wrong on my Pepsi and the Sub is perfect, ALL the time. I know the GMT is worth double, but until its got glidelock(like the new oyster flex Daytonas do now) it’s just inferior to wear, im sorry.

If you ever really fell in love with either one of these watches, it is a keeper. For me, I bought my Submariner right after I finished my studies and working at the local supermarket. Also this watch has been present on my wedding day and the birth of both of my children. That is a long way to go for any other watch, be it Rolex, Omega, Moser or any other brand

The GMT MII and Daytona are the two Rolex’s I long for but I’ve never felt that way about the Submariner. To me it’s always been the Rolex that my friends and colleagues who know nothing about watches seem to have. For a dive watch I just really prefer the Seamaster.

I own both. The 3861 Sapphire and the 124060. The bracelet of the Sub is untouchable compared to the one my Speedy came with. And let's not talk about the excuse of a clasp Omega chose to put on. Only one micro adjust and safe but the style of the clasp itself, I am not over the moon about it (no pun intended). The Speedy itself is awesome, but came with out of the box defect I am trying to resolve with my warranty.

Interesting video, I’ve owned and sold both the Pepsi GMT and Submariner. While I have agree that they are both great watches, over the past couple of years I’m just not comfortable wearing any of my expensive watches in London. I still have a nice collection, including a Rolex Explorer 1 and 2 but I tend to wear my Baltic Aquascapthe Bronze or my 1980’s CWC Field watch on a daily basis. I can relax and enjoy them without worrying about someone trying to pinch them. It’s a shame things are like that but I still enjoy my watches.

A potentially controversial opinion, but I don't think Rolexes are gentlemen's watches at all. In my mind they're for used car dealers and other spivs. How about a subtle JLC, Patek if the budget runs to it, an older Omega, Longines, Grand Seiko, or a British-made (Swiss movement) Bremont. In general, I consider straps to be preferable to bracelets as found on the Tudor I'm wearing right now.

I don't own a Rolex, only ever held one in my hands for a few seconds - delicately like a new born baby, as I have never held anything that expensive in my life. That was a brand new Submariner belonging to my brother in law. I nearly got one about 3 years back, I saved up for a 36mm Explorer for a number of years putting a little aside a month (I prefer to save up, take my time, i dunno it just feels better when you have worked and saved for something, it gives it more value imho) but I bottled it at the last second in favour of 3 other watches (Squale 1521 50 Atmos, Omega Speedmaster 39mm automatic version, Cartier Tank ) My thinking at the time was that I wanted a Casual, Smart Casual and a Formal watch, but not a day has gone by that I wished I just got the Explorer now, maybe later on. Picking out of these two? I prefer the Submariner. It's one of the most iconic watches ever made imho.

I’m always torn between the two…. IMO Sub is a tool, GMT a tad dressier due to polished centre links and clasp, nightmare for showing scratches…..much better size clasp on the GMT although you loose the handy glide lock🤷🏼‍♂️

Nice video, but your conclusion is wrong. They both are great watches, but as you note, I'm not diving 300 meters, but I do cross time zones. As to looks, mine is the GMT Master II, stainless/gold, 16713. While the colored bezels are okay, the black and gold really pops. Look for me at Heathrow June 16th, I will be in the line going through customs with my GMT hand set on Mountain Daylight Time and the hour hand set on GMT.

GMT all day long. The modern GMT offers everything & walks all over the Submariner. Bracelet options, nicer looking & above all offers true functionality that the Sub cannot touch. Plus it has the same trip lock crown that the Sub has & has all the water resistance you’d ever need.
