If you live in the US or Canada and want to say hi feel free to text me: 615-436-5749
A couple years ago I got VERY excited about MPE when I saw the advertising videos online introducing the ROLI Blocks. I bought one, but sold it after about 6 months due to it feeling a bit like a more expressive yet kind of clunky version of a keyboard. Still the idea of MPE expressiveness through midi intrigued me and I liked the idea of what I felt the ROLI was trying to be. So I recently bought the Jamstik Studio guitar, again in search of the perfect MPE Midi controller for myself (as a guitarist). After spending a couple weeks not thrilled with the tracking performance I was getting out of the Jamstik I stumbled across an MPE Controller/Instrument I had never heard of called the Linnstrument (designed by famed inventor Roger Linn). Within a day of owning the Linnstrument I realized it was not what I was looking for ...it was, so much more than that! It was a new intuitive and expressive instrument that I could pick up quite quickly as a guitarist who understands a "fourths" based instrumentation layout, and the tracking was completely seamless as an expressive instrument (vibrato, slides, timbre changes ...though I don't shot that in this video) and no noticeable latency at all. The Jamstik definitely had noticeable latency even at the lowest buffer setting in my DAW ...which made tracking more "clunky" feeling which you can probably tell in this video showing a play through without quantization. It's harder to play well in time with noticeable latency. Though of course you can always quantize after, which I'm sure is what Jamstik users will do.
Will I still buy a midi controlled guitar someday when latency and tracking are better? Yes, probably. Will the Jamstik help guitarists lay down Midi? Again, yes. It's just not yet a perfect implementation of guitar to midi. But maybe it's the best yet? The Linnstrument however is a perfect (IMO) implementation of MPE midi control. So I'm going to learn the Linnstrument. A twist I did not expect in my musical story.

I couldn’t agree with you more about the LinnStrument...it’s an amazing creation! It has changed my musical life completely. I’m so glad to hear that your daughter will start her musical journey with the LinnStrument...I believe it’s an ideal way to learn music! I’ve posted some music that I’ve created with the Linn over on my channel...might be of interest to you. Stay well and keep up the great work!

It’s not set up in fourths , that’s just the preferred layout by most players (for the very reason that is stated here), you can change it to many things. Also Linn designed the LinnDrum , and the MPC , he is singlehandly responsible for steering the entire genre of Hip Hop, not to mention plethora of other genres out there that Hip Hop has influenced (I think it’s possible hip hop has influenced all music in at least some small way)

Great video. This is exactly the question I wanted answered. I have the triple play and was thinking about looking at JamPlay or the linnstrument.

I hope to see vids and lessons for it from you ^.^ I have always wanted a linnstrument but cant afford one. I also don't have much musical experience and I am already kind of old (31)

It's good to see that more guitarists are starting to take notice of the LinnStrument. As a career guitarist and utility musician myself, I have to say, the LinnStrument changed my life. No more keys for me when I have to play synths. Very liberating. FYI... Not sure how much time you've spent with it yet, but if you want to keep with guitar tuning all the way, you can change the tuning scheme to directly reflect the fretboard in standard tuning: Global Settings --> Row Offset --> Guitar. You can even tune each row independently for alternate tunings if you'd prefer. Anyway, congrats on the new LinnStrument. Cheers!

Wow, I didn't realize that. But honestly I LOVE the 4ths tuning. I even tuned my guitar to all fourths for a bit and liked that as well. For playing in Bb or F (Major) it's a better tuning, and just a fun tuning to be creative in. I bought the Linnstrument 200 now as well. I think I'm a Linnstrument player for life now :)

@@DavidDiMuzioLessons I keep mine in guitar tuning; that way everything I do on the guitar is directly transferable to the LinnStrument and vice versa. I also tune the bottom two rows to E1 and A1, like a two-string bass, because who knows what to do with a low F#? ;) Ha-ha... Anyway, yes, LinnStrument for life. I'm never going back to the keys (though that's not really a great loss, because I'm a hack on the keys). Now we just need more MPE-compatible hardware synths, for those of us who don't want a computer onstage. Cheers!

I took you by the word and got myself an linnstrument 128. As a Guitarplayer i had huge expectations. And the first hour i thought that this wasnt a good decision to buy the linn insetead of the jamstik. But with the right sounds under my fingertips i started getting really exited about this! Now i have 30 Days left to figure out all of its feauters, cant wait for it!

I’m guitarist and I think Ukulele may be the first harmonic instrument a kid should learn to play. With $50 of budget you buy one and if the kid doesn’t like enough music there is almost no loss. Even for a typical American a $1,000 instrument is expensive and out of budget. For us in Latinamerica that budget is only for pro or preppy people 😝. Here in Mexico, guitars ($50) and flageolet ($5) are populars. 😬

I've owned the Jamstick and ROLI, that's why I discussed them. I don't like them as much as the Linnstrument.

@@DavidDiMuzioLessons You should try it before making up your mind that the "technology is just not ready yet".Only thing it's missing is natural harmonics, everything else is pretty much like a actual guitar.
