Dang that’s a lot of rope! Didn’t even occur to me to take it apart at all, the mats are usually pretty pricey for me so I was terrified of wrecking it for no reason 😅

​@@FlockTalk Have you tried looking for seagrass doormats at a local hardware store? I was spending a fortune on the mats from bird stores, then found a different bird store that straight out said in their description that they were buying them from the local hardware store & washing in "f10" disinfectant before selling them on (at a HUGE profit increase). I went to the hardware store's online site & sure enough, there they are, with endless reviews from people using for their birds & rabbits (and complaining that they increased price by 50cents and how unfair that huge price increase to 3.50 per mat was lol). I used to treat like you do, but now I have a tonne of them, constantly buying a few when there & leaving out in the weather for a month or 2 to ensure they're safe

@@FlockTalk & if you can't get them cheaper, you could do it in reverse & buy seagrass rope & weave into a seagrass mat yourself, then it REALLY counts as rope for this series :))

Can’t say I’ve ever seen seagrass at any hardware stores near me! Something I’ll have to keep an eye out for now though

The blog has a load of resources sharing various methods to convert a bird on to veggies! flock-talk.tumblr.com/tagged/veggie+conversion My favourite method is to cook some sweet potato, mash it up, and mix seeds in to it before freezing in ice cube trays. You can pop out a cube and warm it prior to serving, most birds go bonkers for warm mashed sweet potato and then it’s easy to purée different veggies in to the mash, gradually increasing the size of the new food as they adjust to the taste. It’s decently uncommon for a bird to actually consume toy parts, it can often look like it due to how they twiddle it further back in their beaks and demolish it in to powder. If you suspect they are consuming it I would consult a vet to check for foreign bodies inside of them, as well as ensuring they’re not nutrient deficient which is often a common reason for eating inedible things Over preening is quite common, captive birds get yoinked from their parent quite young and miss out on learning exactly when to stop preening, as well as environmental stressors, diet, and the general struggles of trying to adapt to captive life. In some cases it can improve with a good diet and specialized enrichment plans, but in other cases there’s not much to be done
