Thank you for posting this Jake. It was great meeting you and training with you. I love the series and I am looking forward to all the new ones coming out. Let's train again next time you come to NY :). Take care. -Tyga
Sambo Steve is a beast. I'm definitely adding his gym to places-to-train before going pro. That cartwheel pass during the scramble was in itself legendary.
This is one of the best series on BJJ and grappling. Great production, amazing content, and wonderful interviews. It also has a very good format. Will there be other episodes for other grappling arts such as Catch-As-Catch-Can (besides Erik Paulson) or Judo (with Gene LeBell)? Also what about a trip to Japan? That'd be dope! Keep on rolling!
I like what he says about how not letting bjj players do leg locks correctly is prevented them from knowing technique properly, I also think it slows down the evolution of the sport. Ibjjf should have a lot less rules
budo is a bjj brown belt , and is very good. we are normally watching him roll with world champions such, as jiujistu world champion who are prime. i have trained with steve he knows alot of good tricks, altho some of his stuff is old school.
I watched this video as a white belt maybe blue belt 10 plus years ago. I am black belt now in BJJ. I developed a unique ankle lock game inspired by this video. What happened to Budo Jake? Thank you for this interview.
I see some comments about Jake going easy on Stephen. I think what is happening is that they agreed to no chokes but Jake's muscle memory and training keeps taking him to choke positions that he can't take. You can see that Stephen just doesn't seem to even pay attention to the choke threat. Real nice guy and as somebody else commented, he made a very good point about injuries. For him, the shoulder locks in BJJ are as dangerous as leg locks. I just started BJJ but I already hurt my own shoulder by actually asking somebody to crank up an omoplata on me. I actually talked with my instructor, encouraging him to talk about a safety policy on shoulder lock - basically tap to them if you are in them, apply them slowly if you are attempting them. Unfortunately he didn't really listen to me. I note that a number of the guys at the dojo have bad shoulders - many not caused by BJJ ( a lot of wrestlers ) but we also have a few that talk about wrenched kimuras.
Uh... except for when Steve throws him to the ground right off the bat, hangs with him the entire time, and then submits him.. you must have been watching a different video.
its not because hes older ,its becuse he isnt an elite grappler, hes an average grappler, evrybody else thats been on the program has been lightyears ahead of any recreational player.
