Back in I think it was 1999 or 2000 I was training with Renzo and we talked about how when Rickson goes all philosopher mode some people get lost and misunderstand. I think at least at that time and similar to what he was talking about here. Many people talk the talk in BJJ meaning they say all the things you're "supposed to say". We all hear the sayings "check your ego at the door", "don't muscle", I want to be a BJJ technician'. I think the reason Rickson is so much better than everybody else simply put . He walks the walk. His skill set was developed as the truest technician. He is one of the few people who can honestly say it's all about superior precise technique. From the time he began to walk he had this ability to be honest with himself and say I used too much muscle or strength on that arm bar even though he taped. I'm gong to do it again, but this time use the absolute minimal force.(This is checking your ego at the door). When I started I probably witnessed hundreds of guys intend to use pure technique, but the millisecond they encountered adversity they switched to muscle to make up the difference. It's one of the hardest things in all of BJJ. This is sort of a combination of mine and Renzo's take on Rickson's BJJ. Everybody wants to be a "technician"(sounds so cool), and way too many people self proclaim to be one but you can't be a precise BJJ technician unless You train that way all the time. It's an exercise in integrity. I think that's why Kron has been able to finally overcome and become World Champ. He grew up training this way. No short cuts to superior techniques even for Kron.

+Marty Mo - - That’s very good insight. I totally agree. I think a practical example of this would be the utilization of positional drilling / sparring that I know at least some of those under the Helio lineage utilize. Perhaps the Carlos side does, I’m just not as familiar with them as I am with the Gracie Academy and Rickson / Dave Kama folks. As you stated, you have to “check your ego at the door” when you intentionally allow your partner (who may not be as skilled as you) to mount you or take your back so that you can practice escaping while he practices maintaining the position and ultimately finishing you. It’s sad, but I would guess that not enough practitioners are willing to let another student, especially one of inferior rank, obtain a dominant position that he or she otherwise wouldn’t be able to assume and maintain on a better student if they were free rolling. I think that positional sparring lends itself to this type of egoless, tecnique-focused approach that Rickson utilized so well, much to the surprise of the masses that followed his career.

This is the idea of Jiu-Jitsu I have for me. I'm practicing JJ for the last 7 years, and I always feel Jiu-Jitsu as a tool for self awareness... for me it's not a fight, it's a philosophy that I can apply the concepts I learn in the dojo in life. And i found in the Rickson's Philosophy a reference to follow and believe that I'm not crazy. Everything is connected, but you have to develop your vision to see...

Valeu.

When I started training jiu jitsu I came from wrestling background, I had experience boxing and in some internal martial arts to practice sensitivity drills such as wing chun. Wing Chun seems brutally effective until The reality of how human beings fight enters the picture. Now you realize that a fight is not a chi sao exercise. When I first started training BJJ, I struggled with being a good training partner because I treated sparring it like a form of wrestling where going at 100% is the norm. Wrestling pushes conditioning strength speed attributes although there is a very technical side to it, The techniques does not always prevail against a much larger stronger opponent. In jujitsu the technique actually does help you beat much larger opponents with less experience, which is why it fulfills the promise that most martial arts make but fail to deliver. BJJ after a few short years of training enables a 150 pound kid to beat up to 220 pound linebacker on the football team. Obviously fighting is often a situation where a game fighter sucker punches a guy Who doesn’t realize the fight has started and that can take the wind out of anybody’s sail. But in one of those after school, meet at the bike racks and fight for the crowd fights with two willing parties, BJJ Gives the two-year 150 pound dedicated bluebelt a serious chance of beating up to 225 lbs linebacker. As long as he flows with the energy because the guy is probably going to tackle him to the ground and try to ground and pound before he realizes that the bjj guy is already on his back sinking in the choke and the guy has no choice but to pass out or give up. That’s what’s great about BJJ. Everybody in high school knows who the wrestlers are at least the good ones and regardless of how big the opponent is, any wrestler of average size is probably going to be strong as a bull and have no problem taking a fight to the ground and controlling someone so those guys don’t really get picked on too much. However somebody who trains jujitsu and doesn’t talk about it much can put on a clinic when scrapping with an unsuspecting reputed tough guy. In fact he can quite easily embarrass the guy if the fight is a real fight and not simply a sucker Punch. But once you Mature past the so I can defend myself, It takes on a spiritual element that can apply to any aspect of your life such as reading people, determining whose genuine, humble, a bully, mentally intense, and can also teach you about peoples physical intentions in a physical Conflict, The best analogy would be to surfing where You can time a wave, accept its energy And try to merge with it until the power starts to wane How much point you get out unscathed. On the other hand if you don’t accept the energy and simply try to exploit the power of the water to hitch a free ride, why are you attempt to see yourself separately from the water like you’re riding a wild bull, sooner or later you’re going to get crushed. It’s all part of the learning experience of course but like surfing any sort of combat training should slowly ratchet up the intensity when you’re ready for it. People should not come to I could get to class the first day and experience a beating. They could come to class and learn about the power of jujitsu through guys using very little effort to control them on the ground while letting them know that they can trust you as a training partner

I am glad the world is re-discovering chess. Everything he said, a chess player knows. Chess is how the pieces are connected and how the pieces are balanced. And it is an invisible game. The pieces are on the board, but how it is connected and balanced is invisible.

I as a Shodan in Aikido, have been able to understand my Aikido, better, since i have been studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Basically- it's a "give and take" type of scenario- if I personally feel I can't "out muscle" a guy- why try?- if I wait, and at the right time, I can capitalize on the "energy" given by my opponent... Great interview...Respect to Rickson! Osu!

Why doesn't he give credits to other arts. Non of his idea are original, even Budo j caught on to this when he mentioned Akido and the theories behind it. I swear I love this guy but these guys are the biggest plagiarizers in the history of martial arts.

rak3147 Whats not to understand man? I enjoyed to interview a lot but those ideas are are way older then him. You will find them in the Japanese Arts and even in Greco Roman Wrestling. I give Rickson props for exposing these ideas to the BJJ world man. I personally like the idea behind his association for BJJ and the reform that he wants to see in BJJ.
@Quach7

"Why doesn't he give credits to other arts." Because he independently re-discovered it by experience. I knew every thing he said from chess. People discover the same thing from different arts. Practically everything from every martial arts, ballet dancers know from their own experience. "When you know one art, you know all arts." - Hagakure

D.F. Simmons Dude, you're simply an idiot. Gi grappling is much richer and more complicated than no gi. You're obviously just an Eddie Bravo wannabe who spends more time smoking pot, manicuring your facial hair, and picking out cool rash guards than actually training.
@d.f.simmons9202
@d.f.simmons9202 9 лет назад
Being insulting does not change the fact that gi grappling is a SNOOZE FEST. Metamoris is proof; they want to produce an entertaining show so they mix gi with no-gi. Just because gi grappling is "more technical" in your opinion, which might be true, does not mean that it is not boring
@btownshreds1
@btownshreds1 8 лет назад
+D.F. Simmons I respect your opinion. But I'm sorry. Tell that to Marcelo Garcia. He will tell you to train in the Gi if you want to excel at no Gi.

am I really the only one who thinks Rickson is a gigantic bullshitter? rather than saying "Oh I do this and this differently, and have been blessed with this and that, blah blah blah", he could've shown some humility and said "I don't think I'm any different than anybody else." Because the truth is Rickson in his prime would get smashed by today's champions. Kron has been submitted by many of today's black belts, and he at least has had access to modern diet and exercise science. Rickson never did anything that hasn't been done before. He was just ahead of his time. but that time has passed.
@joebeast15
@joebeast15 10 лет назад
No its just you. Keep watching when he shows the techniques, hes on some next level shit. You are just a hater
@joebeast15
@joebeast15 10 лет назад
I disagree I think he would have tooled Sakuraba. Rickson didnt fight Saku cause his heart wasnt in it anymore after his first born tragically died, one can hardly fault him for that. So because of that you "dont respect his MMA career". Wow you must be hard to impress....
@joebeast15
@joebeast15 10 лет назад
Cause I am a purple belt under Rickson and have trained with him personally, so I ve felt and seen his technique.... thats why
@joebeast15
@joebeast15 10 лет назад
Oh ok man so YOU a new blue belt knows it all. Dont take my word for it or Ricksons whos competed in BOTH. Or me whos competed in both and have been doing jiu jitsu for 10years. With that kind of attitude you will never advance past blue either. What dont you understand about Ricksons jiu jitsu being about WHEN punches and fighting is involved, I think youre confusing his jiu jitsu with sport jiu jitsu, in which case I would agree
@joebeast15
@joebeast15 10 лет назад
You are basically a living, breathing Oxy Moron. You train jiu jitsu yet hate the Gracies. Hmmm sounds legit, I guess its the cool stylish thing to do these days. And I dont even drink, brah, so I wouldnt be in a bar fight
