Ive watched this for the second time : the first time for the man, the second time for his wife and her selfless dedication and love for him... so much respect for both of these people. Amazing story!

Jake Budo is a VERY good interviewer. Seriously. He either studied to be this good at interviewing, or he is naturally good at it, or both. But seriously, he is extremely good. I would go as far as to say that some famous interviewers could learn a thing or two from him.

Marcelinho is one of my all time favorites and I agree that he is the best middleweight of all time. Very unassuming too. Very humble, polite, and gentlemanly. If you want a Black belt from him, you better be an honorable person. If you can train under him, in NY, you'll know your art.

The same goes with any sport or martial art discipline. Take a boxer for example, Joe Frazier was a right handed Boxer but he was known for his left hook. You were better off taking a right hand from Frazier, even though he was right handed, than you were taking a left hook.

Marcelo is a great champion and all-around good and humble human being, but I must respectfully disagree with his assessment of his athletic ability and his game. He has the perfect body type and skill set for how he attacks in no gi JJ. No doubt his body has been strengthened by the techniques that he has focused on for so many years, but he also naturally has large, strong legs, especially if you consider that he doesn’t strength train as he said. This combined with his work ethic, focus, and ability to hone in on the shortcuts in the no gi game are what has made him a competition legend. I also disagree with his view that his approach is for the masses. For that I would look to someone who was less athletic, more focused on self-defense rather than defeating other high level competitors, and who developed a way of training and self-preservation that allowed for continuation into the final years of life. Grandmaster Helio Gracie.

It's great that Tatiana has been interviewed: it goes to show that a champion is also made of a real, 100% committed support of their loved ones... She gave up jiu-jitsu practice for a while to make a living for them, just so he could train harder! Both of them share the heart of a champion. I'm really happy for Marcelo and Tatiana that their school is now so successful. The highlight: "If you want to get good at jiu-jitsu, you should train jiu-jitsu."

I don't know about that. The x-guard is something I would call practical. I think he was trying to say there are a lot of different sweeps, takedowns, and submissions out there, but Marcelo only has a few that he use for competition purposes. IE He uses the arm drag hundreds of times but will transition and apply it in many different ways.

I don't agree with Budo Jake's comment. Any good judo players are able to throw both sides...I agree one side maybe better than the other, but you should still able to execute both sides...

i remember when i first started playing ice hockey, i was so extatic about it i dreamt hockey every night all night for weeks. three weeks later i was doing backwards crossovers both ways and all sorts of other things i'd only ever done in my dreams. I think this is what marcelo is like with BJJ, the guy is so exuberant about it his mind is just fantasizing about it constantly.

5:16 is a Tupac reference. Not sure if he knows that obvious or if he was trying to bite Tupacs line, but its cool either way.

This video is a testament to the fact that BJJ creates beautiful people.

Interesting take on training on one side. We call that a "One sided Sam" in my academy, but Marcelo's point of view makes a lot of sense.
