Roller Chain Assembly Without a breaker tool DIY 

This method has worked for me all my life, I’m 52 and my dad taught me/us this as kids for our bike chains, simple but MAKE SURE YOU FLATTEN OUT THE PLATES BEING REUSED , IF NOT , PROBLEMS

i spent about an hour trying to get out that fucking pin and i will tell you all now, this guy makes it look a lot easier then it actually is. Its possible to do without the chain tool but be ready for a battle. I highly recommend going out and buying the proper tools because you dont want to end up ruining your new chain which i did ruin my old one but who cares lol.

im now 43 and i remember ive done this only 2 times an it was easy..if im a bike repair guy or an enthusiast.....yes i would buy the tool

I did it this way on my old 20$ bike and it was fine for about a year or so. But I'm buying the tool now for my new bike because I don't want to damage the gears.

Harbor Freight, $11, solid as Hell, used it many times over and has yet to break on me. Just make sure you grind down the rivets (dremel w/sand stone bit) before you try to push it through and dont force it.

If you can use a dremel to grind it down, shouldnt u be able to just put a grind-end or dremel tools on a normal electric screwdriver and just go?

OH!!! A Chain has to be a proper length or it might break or come off your rear sprocket and get sucked into the engine and toss you while cruising 80 down the freeway. I get it now. I've only been riding MOTORCYCLES for close to 15 years, glad you told me. Since You're trying to Troll me, let me clarify, IF that's possible. I was referring to breaking the chain while it was still on the bike. Can't be done using this method. Just buy a Chain Breaker and Call it good. Cheers.

it can only work if the chain is completely off from the bike. Try doing it when it still in its place and in upright position when you normally facing in real life situation.

Just buy a Chain Cutter tool on eBay or Amazon for $5. Saves your time. and you don't have to damage your fingers.

It's easy and I hit like 3 time but got to hit it hard so that the tip of the nail won't slip off

Those people who criticize this suggestion are not able to do an emergency repair because they do not have the special tool ... how could I tell them that happened to me to repair in 30 min. AC pump of gasoline on a Autobianchi A112, putting the pin that commanded what I had on hand .... a cartridge case :-))

Bravo, those two commeti on the top I did not like, I have been forced to make at work these joints without the right tools, but with patience and a bit of manual work is one thing perfectly feasible, certainly a job well done is only valid to the 90% and the duration is the same, but it means that instead of working 1 million hours, it works for 900,000 hours? :-)

I my "Short" Time riding Street Bikes, I choose NOT to use Clip On Master Link & instead have only dealt with riveted "master links" (out of choice mainly due to trusted advice from many credited sources). And NOW recently successfully using EK's Screw Type Master Link. So there's that

chains are not used only in bikes. I hammer pins out of heavy duty chains. It's the only effective tool to use, the proper tool is a hydraulic press which I don't have. Mechaincal chain tools may or may not be suitable depending on the size of the chain. On an industrial chain 30mm wide you will not have that option. For a bike chain, yeah, a chain tool is inexpensive and may already have on a multitool. for motorcycles and up is more complicated.

how can I find the correct pin on chain I tried this method but I couldnt seperate the chain :(

It's okay, everything is done with the tools that you possess and a minimum of dexterity and patience, but the pin punch must have a diameter slightly less than the plug and flat head, otherwise if it were to tip pointed would do expand further the pin while pushing, increasing the difficulty of the job. Also for put the plate should not even beat with the punches because pressing a small point, it tends to bend it, better to use instead the upper nut previously used at the bottom to remove it.

How do you do it if you have a rusty chain

How do you break a roller chain with hollow pins? anyone know?

once you have it reassembled, do you press the ends of the pins back down? or is that even necessary?

And when do you need to break AND Rivet a Chain that ISN'T actually already on your bike while wrapped around 2 sprockets?

you really only need to get the pins evenly sticking out and the plates even and moving freely. Peening the ends of the pins isnt really nesessary and since they are hardened steel may not even be possible without hitting them so hard you cause other problems. Iv never had any problem with them coming apart on their own

Maybe in YOUR little world the only chain you'll see is on your bicycle. When you are replacing a chain with a new one you have to get it to proper length.
