The original roller coaster tycoon intro in 1080p!
Many people are familiar with the fact that RollerCoaster Tycoon is limited to a resolution of 1024x768. However, with a hex edit, someone figured out that you can increase the resolution to an official maximum of 1280x1024, and remain in fullscreen. After a bit of research and trials myself, I have found the hex values that partially changes this limited resolution in windowed mode.
Within all RCT.EXE executables, there are two hardcoded limits that determine the largest possible windowed resolutions, but only one of them can ever be changed freely. The first limit is the hex edit modification, which would allow a theoretical maximum resolution of 32775 by 14340 within windowed mode assuming there were no other limits. This is what is changed in the modified executable downloads below. The second limit, however, is DirectX and the DirectPlay API used by the game. Due to the fact the game uses a largely outdated version of the API, it seems to only have code to allow the end user to go up to their resolution on their primary monitor. Thus, this becomes the second limit. However, that is not such a bad thing, as it still allows as high resolutions as your primary monitor can go.

Question: Where do I download this patch?
Answer: Look up. Look up. It's there, trust me.
Question: Do I need any expansion packs to use this modification?
Answer: Yes, you need both Loopy Landscapes and Corkscrew Follies to use this mod.
Question: What is rct1080_drexler.exe?
Answer: This exe is actually a combined version of both the Drexler patch (which removes some minor in-game restrictions and allows the use of modified save files and trainers) and my windowed mode resolution patch. It's made this way so that you only need to use one executable to have both patches in your game. However, it only works with copies of RCT that are version 1.20.013. It will NOT work with Deluxe, GOG, or Steam releases, and it will never be compatible with them unless the Drexler patch is updated (if it ever is, please let me know!).
Question: Do I need to rename the patch once it is on my system?
Answer: No, you do not. In fact, you usually would not have to drag the executable file into the install directory itself, but try that if you get errors.
Question: Does this work with the Deluxe verison of RollerCoaster Tycoon?
Answer: It now does! I updated the file recently to include a file named rct1080_deluxe.exe. This should work with all Deluxe based versions of the game, including the GOG and Steam releases.
Question: Does this work with the GOG version of the game?
Answer: It does! Use rct1080_deluxe.exe to run the game.
Question: Does this work with the Steam version of the game?
Answer: It might. Some people have reported success with using this mod with the Steam version of the game. If you would like to try, use rct1080_deluxe.exe to run the game. If that does not work, try moving it to the game directory within the SteamApps\common folder.
Question: What is "Error Trapper - Access Violation"?
Answer: Basically, this means something went wrong. Unfortunately, there's no one way to diagnose these errors, so the best thing you can do is reinstall the game and backup your save file before that.
Question: Why doesn't this patch work with monitors with a resolution of 1366x768?
Answer: To be entirely honest, I have no idea. DirectPlay doesn't seem to like them, and it glitches the game whenever it goes past 1280x768. But it works fine with 1920x1080, which I don't entirely understand.
Question: Does this patch work if the game is installed within a custom directory?
Answer: Yes! The EXE will pull the install directory from the registry! However, if you want to be safe, copy the patch to your install directory. There is no need to rename any files.

To anyone asking for the patch again, i would rather recommend using OpenRCT2. A open source mod for RCT2 (needs rct2 files) that also brings every single RCT1 scenario (needs rct1 files obv) The game has tons of improvements to the og game, Yes, including a 1920x1080 screen resolution.

Using the modified hex edited version of the executable for the Deluxe version works perfect at 1920X1080 windowed especially with the included Deluxe version. I have been unsuccessful at cranking up the resolution with proper hex editing any higher than 1920X1200 however. The game continues to have exception error above this resolution probably due to outdated API. It is still impressive to see how well this game performs nearly 20 years later and in full HD, as it holds its age well.

running on steam edition, can confirm deluxe version of the exe works. however, my native resolution was 1440p, and the game crashed. turn the resolution to 1080p and the game works fine.

Hi nice work! But I have a question: Is it possible to make this edit for other languages for example german? It's the only version where fullscreen is working. in witch resolution is not importent only that the fullscreen is working :D (for mouse to side scrolling). My game will only run if i run it in compatibility settings at 640 by 480. Ive tried running your mod with and without these settings and i get a trapper error, what can i do to get this to run corretly? Also when i did get it to run with 640 by 480 it wont move around with the mouse. Any advice?

"This hex edit modification should allow a theoretical maximum resolution of 32775 by 14340 within windowed mode" Is the 1080p patch limited to a maximum of 1080p height? I don't edit hex so I'd have no idea how to increase it. What if you added other common higher resolutions for people who want them, or just say how to convert hex? I have a 1920x1080 resolution, so it works out fine for me, but what about the future? Another question... do we need to rename the 1080 exe RCT.exe, or just launch it as is? I noticed if changing it to RCT.exe, my color scheme turns basic, whereas keeping it the other name lets Aero show through. Great work on figuring this out, I was SO DISAPPOINTED when I learned of the resolution limits. Haven't tried RCT 2 yet, but I'm assuming something similar exists.

Hey, sorry for the late reply! The 1080p patch should not be limited to 1920x1080. When making the patch, I believe I maxed out the values as high as I could, just for future compatibility. RollerCoaster Tycoon technically has two resolution limits within the game, one via hex values and another via what I believe is DirectX. When hacking resolutions into a program, you're supposed to flip the values when hex editing, but I didn't do that. Because I didn't flip the values, the EXE is technically reading to not allow resolutions past 32775 x 14340 with this mod, which is an unrealistic resolution at the time anyways (It won't ever be reached). The DirectX limit applies because it will never stretch past the resolution of your primary monitor, thus this becomes the second limit. When running the game, you do not need to rename the executable, it can be whatever you want it to be. In fact, you don't even need to run the game within its install folder, as it can pull right from the registry where it is installed. Your color scheme will turn basic when the executable is named RCT.EXE though because of Windows compatibility. Also, thanks for the complement! I didn't even use a debugger to figure this out, I just played around with values near the fullscreen modification, hoping to find a way to break the fullscreen limit. It was practically a guess and check method, but it wasn't too far off from the full screen hex values. When I failed at that though, I noticed the game would stretch to fullscreen without the 1280x1024 limitation. But anyways, enjoy the patch, I've been using it for the past few months, and I have had no problems! :D

Hey, I found a major typo on the WSGF page with the info. It has been fixed. If you couldn't apply the modification to your own RCT file, try once again. This patch unfortunately still does not work for Deluxe users, sorry!

Hello. The deluxe version just got released on Steam. As others have said here, the hex sequences aren't in there. I haven't tried your patch, but I don't want to run the game in 1080 (my screen is 1680x1050). Any tip?

Something I have discovered is that the values within the exe are not the only thing restricting the game resolution. Because the game uses an older version of DirectX, it is also limited by the current screen resolution of your monitor. Thus, you should be fine using my patch. The max is 1920x1080, but it works fine with resolutions below that. Also, you are using deluxe, so the patch probably isn't going to work. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about that.

Vermilicious It could be because of the location of the files on the Steam version compared to the GOG version. With that said, it might not work on the Steam version. The RCT series is very difficult to work with because of the way the game is programmed, and the varying versions of the game's EXE are not only coded completely differently, but it looks for its required files within different directories (which is confusing, I know!). With that said, since the patch for Deluxe is based on the GOG version, try going into your SteamApps directory and copying the patch within the RCT folder in there. Another possible thing to try is to copy the RollerCoaster Tycoon directory into a new folder called "GOG Games" under "Program Files (x86)" if 64-bit OS or just "Program Files" if 32-bit OS. Also, try using compatibility mode for Windows XP as well as use 640x480 (just to try to get the game running with the EXE).

Thanks for this. Helps a ton. Though when moving the windowed game to another monitor with a different resolution (in my case from primary 1280x1024 to secondary 1440x900) it caps the resolution to the primary monitor's max resolution, so I get a 1280x900 window at maximum on the 1440x900 monitor. Swapping primary status between them reversed the problem to being only 900 pixels tall on the 1280x1024. Interesting problem, figured I'd point it out.

That is actually a really helpful point, proving my guess upon how the game works. There are two limits in RollerCoaster Tycoon in terms of how far you can maximize the game window then: Hard-coded values that are edited in my EXEs as well as DirectX / DirectPlay, pulling data from the resolution of your primary monitor! Fullscreen 1080p doesn't work for me. I get "Error Location: Unknown" if I use the rct1080, rct1080_drexler. But Windowed 1080p works fine for me if I use the rct1080_deluxe. Using the Steam version BTW, so I figured as much that only the rct1080_deluxe would work for me. So my question is -- any method to get the rct1080_deluxe to work with Fullscreen 1080p? Also what is the hex code I need to replace the strings with in the WSGF guide? I can't find the strings listed on that page in the rct1080_deluxe file you provided.

The rct1080_deluxe file already has the mod applied - in that case, you'll need to search for the already modified hex values in the WSGF page. If you still can't find them, try searching for part of the hex string instead. rct1080 and rct1080_drexler are for the original CD-ROM release of the games. GOG and Steam updated their copies of the game to match the later RCT Deluxe edition of the game, which requires a different patch. Deluxe has anti-trainer measures built into it, as well as a compressed exe which makes it a little bit harder to modify. Since you have the Steam version, you'll need to use rct1080_deluxe.exe. Also, there is no 1080p support for fullscreen in this patch, only windowed mode is supported. You can try abortji's patch to see if you can get fullscreen to work, however, I cannot guarantee that will work properly

Hello, i have the Steam "RTC Deluxe"-variant and my monitor is 1680x1050. Im trying to run rct1080_deluxe.exe but i get this error: Error Trapper --------------------------- Exception Raised - Access Violation, Error Location: Unknown 1. Hey, I own the RCT1 Deluxe version from GOG and tried your rct1080_deluxe.exe, but sadly I'm getting the Access Violation error aswell as soon as I try to go into windowed mode. I have a 1440p monitor and use Windows 10, any idea what might be the issue? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hope I'm not too late, I was in the same situation: same error, 27" 1440p monitor, and Win10. I then changed the monitor resolution down to 1080p, and it works perfectly! Hope it helps!

I also just purchased the Deluxe Edition, from the Steam Summer Sale. However, the game runs the same resolution, and NOT windowed regardless of: ~ Where the "rct1080_deluxe.exe" is located (Download folder or custom location) ~ It's name (even if changed to "RCT.exe") ~ Compatibility (Running in XP, or 640x480) My native screen size is 3200x1800, (though I usually run in 1366x768), and have tested this in both of those, and 1920x1080. Is there anything I've missed trying? Thanks!! :)

You might need to go into the game settings and set your game to run in Windowed mode from there. Fullscreen still works with this patch, but Fullscreen will still run with a limited resolution from 640x480 to 1024x768.

1366x768 probably doesn't work because 1366 is not even divisible by 4. 640, 800, 1024, 1680, 1920 are all divisible by 16. Asuming widths are alligned to some offset in ASM/C is pretty common. I haven't seen the api docs but that might be it, have you tested it with 1376x768 or 1360x768? Also there is something I don't understand, in the link explaining the Hexedit, the values were stored in big endian (1280 x 1024, 0x5000 x 0x4000) and you changed it to (1920 x 1080, 0x0780 x 0x0438), however here in the description you are telling me the teorical maximum are the values of 1080p in LITTLE endian (32775 x 14340, 0x8007 x 0x3804). I'm pretty sure you got confused in the description, it doesn't add up.

For some reason, you have to flip the values in the code, so 0x8007 is actually 1920, and 0x3804 is actually 1080. I didn't do that, I left them as 0x0780 and 0x0438, and since the game rads them in reverse, it interprets it as 32775 x 14340. I forget why the values need to be flipped, but it does make a difference if you don't flip them.

Yumaja Go ahead and try it. I don't have a 1600x900 monitor to try it with, but if it works fine, let me know. The worst that could happen is that the game could crash. If it does, it doesn't work.

it works with the steam release if all connected screens are 1080p. Or at least i get an access violation if i use my 27" at 1440p. Changing the hex values to 2560 x 1440 still returns in an access violation however

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure as I don't own the Steam version. As of what I know, however, the Steam version is mostly equal to Deluxe, so I would copy rct1080_deluxe.exe to "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\RollerCoaster Tycoon (I don't know what it's called, so I'm just guessing)\" After copying it to there, just run rct1080_deluxe.exe to play the game. If you have any trouble though, let me know because I can't test the Steam version of the game myself, I only have the GOG and the disk version.

If it is a lower than 1080p resolution, you can still use this patch. It will simply cap at your monitor's resolution.

Hi! Basically, you'll need to get to the install directory of RCT. If you have the disc version, this would be in your C:\Program Files (x86)\Hasbro Interactive\RollerCoaster Tycoon\ folder (If you don't have a Program Files (x86) folder, then use Program Files). Then, you can simply drop the rct1080.exe file into this folder and run the game using the rct1080.exe. For Steam and GOG releases, use the rct1080_deluxe.exe as that version of the game is slightly different. The install directory is different for those versions, so you might have to look in the Program Files/Steam/ folder or the GOG Games/ folder on your hard drive.

+computerlife22 Alright. Pardon me for the spam, but I found my answers in the comments section BUT I don't know how to put ABORTJ's patch for YOUR patch into play. If there's one more thing you could explain for me, it would be this. Thanks

Basically, run AbortJ's patch after opening the game. It will find your RCT executable file in memory and simply make it fullscreen. You'll have to do this every time you play the game.

As a note, a BDIFF patch would be so small it could be put in hex or Base64 in the comments of the video. (Yeah, they are that tiny.)

I currently can only get it windowed, will your patch work with the CD version and if so do I just download it and it automatically does it or I do I have to place it somewhere specific. You're getting this when saving/loading? If that's the case try restoring down the game screen when saving.That solved for me

It was when loading. Turns out I had to manually set my monitor to 1920x1080 and it was fine. My monitor is 22560x1440 native

Hope I'm not too late, I was in the same situation: same error, 27" 1440p monitor, and Win10. I then changed the monitor resolution down to 1080p, and it works perfectly! Hope it helps!

Downloaded the RCT1080 link today, and I have had Malware-bytes installed for a couple of days now. It did its daily scan and found "Adware.IStartSurf" in the RCT1080 files. I didn't see anything wrong and I don't know if I would've but this is just a warning to anyone out there downloading this file.
