It's nice to see in numbers how the different methods work to save space. However, I have always found that packing cubes and space bags end up taking more space in my suitcase to just rolling my clothes, because you end up wasting so much space around the edges and between bags. With just rolling, I can fill every nook and cranny of my suitcase to fit my clothes. I would love to see the same comparison between methods, but with the actual number of clothes that completely fills up the side of the suitcase, then see which method fits best.

Thank you for sharing these wonderful methods. I watched the entire video while at work. I've ordered some packing cubes for my 16 day trip. Wish me luck.

Absolutely! Sending positive vibes. May your suitcase be light and your trip fabulous. I’d love to know which packing cubes you go with and how they perform.

A very good comparison video. I always fly with only a personal item bag and I use compression packing cubes. Clothes in a medium cube and underwear and socks and pyjamas in a small and I put the small cube in the medium cube with the clothes. Everything else I put in mesh pouches, like makeup and another pouch with cables and chargers. It fits perfectly in my personal item bag that goes underneath the seat.

Very interesting to see the side-by-side comparisons. I’m a little confused about the compression cube, though. If you start with the compression cube already and it’s compressed state, how is it any different than just using a regular packing cube? I thought the act of zipping up the second zipper took some of the air between the items out. I haven’t decided what method I’ll use for my next trip but I’m limited more by weight than volume since it’s an international flight. I’m leaning toward ziploc bags!

Great question! Sorry, I didn’t think to mention this in the video. The sides of the Eagle Creek compression cube when it is uncompressed are 4 inches tall. That’s a good guide for the max height that your clothes can be stacked before zipping down to compress. I still stack the clothes 4 inches high when I start with the cube already compressed. I have 2.5 inches of my stack that sit above the shortened, 1.5 inch sides of the cube. That’s the key when I only zip the top zipper. The clothes have to be taller than the sides of the cube. So I know they still will be squashed down, pressing some of the air out when I zip the top. I prefer this tweak because I find zipping the compression zipper harder on my fingers than zipping the top zipper. The fabric on the sides of the packing cube tends to bunch outward and get caught in the compression zipper. I’ve tried the hack of sticking the tip of my index finger between the zipper and the fabric . As you zip, you slide your fingertip along to keep it right under the zipper so that the fabric can’t get caught in the zipper’s teeth. It works but seems to take longer than only zipping the top zipper. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you want me to make a video on the difference.

Really great demo!! Do the space saver bags cause the clothes to wrinkle more than compression cubes? Just curious 😊 TY!

Thanks! Your comment made my day 😊 . Yes, the space saver bags do cause more wrinkles than compression cubes. I’ve found that taking a travel size of Downy wrinkle releaser helps for casual clothes (t-shirts, Polos, shorts, etc.).

I take an empty space bag in case I shop and need more space, but I do not like to pack with them on my way to my destination.
@a_tailored_life

That is a great tip. I’ll definitely be using it. An empty space bag barely takes up more space than a piece of paper yet can give extra insurance that all my souvenirs will fit.

Sure that these methods will give space but however will any of these methods will give you more kgs and we can put max stuff as per 23kg in each suitcase ? Like if i pack normally and it becomes 23kg but if I pack like these methods, will it give me more kgs?
@a_tailored_life
@a_tailored_life 6 месяцев назад
Great question. These packing styles won’t reduce the weight of the items you pack. But because you are packing more in less space, you can pack in a smaller and lighter suitcase as your checked bag. I was able to switch from a large, 76 cm (30 in) checked bag that weighed 5.7 kg (12.6 lbs) to a medium, 71 cm (28 in) checked bag weighing 3.2 kg (7.1 lbs.). I couldn’t reduce the weight of the contents but fitting all the same items in a smaller bag saved me 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) of weight overall. The extra weight savings lets me bring home 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) of souvenirs if I want to.

@@a_tailored_life what a great answer. thanks for taking the time to do the comparisons and answer questions!
@bigreddallas2742
@bigreddallas2742 6 месяцев назад
Very enlightening. However, 1) It does no good if your checked bag is over weight, costing you big bucks, or if 2) Your carry-on and/or personal item is too heavy to carry or pull comfortably. And remember, you have to shlep that personal item for miles through the terminals and on trains, trams, and metros. And you have to lift that stuffed carry-on over your head into the bins on planes.

So true. Great insight! I pack so tightly now, that I can fit 23 kg / 50 lbs in my medium size checked bag. I never take the x-large one anymore.
