The "carrying dirt intonthe afterlife" isn't an exact translation, but since Japanese take off their shoes before entering a home, and Shinto belief is that shoes carry burden, it is probably because she wants to rid herself the "burden" of living and become pure in the afterlife.
Okay, so.. This song is about a girl (represented by Miku) with depression who gets physically abused and bullied by her peers and the boy in the white sweater is a personification of her depression. As the song progresses we see that Miku keeps "rolling". Rolling is a slang term used for cutting a.k.a. a form of self harm. The boy keeps asking her, "Are you okay now?" To which Miku replies, "I'm fine." but those words are, and i quote, "Are gone with the wind" which implies that she just threw it out there to say it, without any real meaning behind it. Further in, Miku states, "One more time, one more time" which refers to her "rolling" Which states that she says she'll only do it one more time, everytime she does it. We also see that as the song progresses, there's scenes of her covered in bandages and injuries. Implying that her peers Bully her and that leads to her 'rolling'. Towards the end of the song, the boy states that she's been rolling long enough and that she should rest because she's probably tired, to which she replied that she just wants to stop breathing "Now." The song cuts out after that, implying the fact that she died. I've seen a lot of people attacking this song because they believe it to be about a girl who in the end kills herself. Honestly having read the lyrics without music, I believe personally that she doesn't kill herself, and the boy really isn't the personification of her deppression. Personally I think that the guy is just a guy in her life, one that cares for, or loves her. The rolling through the day can refer to her sighing when she says she's fine, and the likes, as I remember my Grandparents used to always say "Stop letting your breath roll out." when I would sigh. So at the end instead of letting her roll her breath out again, he helps her out. I find hope in this song, not despair like most of you seem to. Again, that's just me personally.
When I was in grade 4 or 5, my friend forgot something in the music classroom so we both went there and no one else was there. When she got her thing, she rolled on the carpet. Think about it like this: The final line is something like "I'll stop your breath from rolling out... for now." I feel like what this means is that the boy represents someone who actually cares for Miku, which is why the line implies that she won't stop breathing just yet. Some people pointed out that Miku didn't have her shoes on, which implied suicide, but in the final scene, Miku does have them on. So what I interpret this as is that Miku tried to kill herself but the boy was able to stop her, reassuring her that things would be okay. That would explain why Miku has her shoes on, she was stopped in the middle of the act. Again, this is only my interpretation, it just made me upset that everyone else kept going with the same old "she killed herself and the boy is her depression" theory

Theory: She's going through serious things. She's looking for her mistakes (guilt), repeating things that are evidently hurting her (self harm and possible insanity), and is stopping her breath from seeping out (attempting suicide). I think the guy represents it all, but also her hesitation. As someone who goes through similar issues, hesitation is really annoying sometimes. Pay close attention to when she's saying she'll climb the mountain from which she knows she'll fall. In the video, you see him come up and try to stop her before it cuts into the chorus again. Also, he's telling her that's she's fine when she's about to attempt suicide again, making me think that, while he could possibly be her depression or mental illness, I really see him as her inner hero - one of the voices that opposes the rest by protecting her. As for when she's choking him, she's trying to stop holding back so she could "roll" without someone caring if she got hurt, including herself.

i understand the lyrics, but it was only just now i began to understand the placement of them. so here's my interpretation: as commonly known, miku is being abused by her peers and thinks of herself as the odd one out (although that sounds like a childish term) the unidentified male in the video is a personification of some sort of her depression or whichever mental illness. now here's the part that originally confused me. after she decides she cannot find her mistake and tries to "roll" again, the meaning if the lyrics seems to be gone with the wind (haha... not funny.). but the way I look at it, her deciding to roll is a metaphor for trying to become clean. the line "I'll stop this breath from seeping out for now" is referencing her last breath and how she's trying to put aside her suicidal thoughts. the hill represents her happiness and how she rolls down it after each time period where she's clean. "one more time". She really, really wants to overcome her mental illness but it only shows how controlling mental illnesses can be and that it can almost be compared to addiction. she knows she'll never summit the hill of happiness but rather roll down the hill, yet she still tries. In the end, her mental illness wins the fight and convinces her that it's okay, because she's tired of putting off "the end". her "rolling" isn't necessarily her streaks of self harm, but the periods of time while she's clean. the lines "rolling girl has given it her all" and "it's just too far the hue she recalls" support this idea; it really is terrible trying to get clean, especially with psychotic depression like the girl portrayed. it's like you know you need to do it, but it's no better than the depression itself, because you haven't given up and the extra effort is effecting the mental illness. Wow.
Actually I think rolling means rolling a die to see what number it lands. If it lands on a specific number (3) then you take your own life. It's actually a popular thing to do in Japan before you kill yourself

The vibrant colors may signify that she found the peace she wanted in death, that now that it's all finished she doesn't need to worry anymore and can be happy. So here is my interpretation of this song: So there is a girl who is suffering some sort of mental illness (I'm just not going to say depression because it could be any mental illness really) and she wants to live but doesn't at the same time and the guy represents that mental illness. In the end she gives up and takes her own life. Welp that is my analysis rip.

The really sad thing in this music video is that about 3/4 of the way into the song, she was running, and then at 2:30 the male figure caught up to her and stopped her. I think it represents how she kept on fighting, and how she was doing so well, but her depression caught up to her and dragged all of her progress through the dirt.
Ok here is how I see it. So basically we can all agree that Miku is being bullied by her peers, but one thing doesn't add up. Alot of people are saying that the boy is her depression but I think thats quite the opposite. Though, I watched the english subbed version (/Akidearest's video) and in her video, she did say that the boy might be the representation of her depression, since dub and sub can be different in some times, it might give out a different meaning from what the original meant. I hate people who make comments like this to try and give the song a "happy ending" when in reality if you listen to the lyrics it's clearly a completely different story. The boy represents suicide and suicidal thoughts, and "rolling" likely represents her struggling through the pain of another day. Every time she says "one more time" to the boy and asks him to "please let her roll again" she means that she's pushing away the thoughts, and forcing herself to keep trying, even though it's only getting worse for her as she goes on. Her strangling the boy and saying "I'll stop this breath from seeping out" also represents suppressing her suicidal thoughts. "the meanings are hidden under cover" suggests that she's lying to herself about what she truly wants. All the bandages on her do not represent physical harm, rather they represent the psychological toll life has taken on her. Finally in that last part, now unable to control the thoughts she finally accepts them, and the last few words are meant to be spoken by the manifestation of her thoughts, saying "aren't you tired of doing this?" referring to the daily struggle life gives her, and "I'll stop your breath from seeping out" representing her finally letting go. It's an awful sad story, and writing your own meaning to try and make it some kind of suicide "fight song" isn't gong to make that go away.
I think it's about a girl who was going through depression and that guy with black hair was her personified feelings. She felt like he was choking her and that he was driving her insane with his voice always in her head, along with countless other voices of people from her life. However, in the end they both come to the realisation that they shouldn't be hurting each other like that. So, the guy hugs her and apologises for what he did and she closes her eyes, accepting his apology. So, she accepts herself and begins to come out of her depression. By 'rolling' they're refering to her like, 'rolling with it' and trying to move ahead which is hard to do when you're genuinly despressed. But she keeps getting more and more hurt from trying to move on, so her depression holds her back, which you can actaully see him do at one point. He (her depression) tries to show her how moving ahead in life is just painful, and is trying to make her see that it's not worth it. Just a little more!' she is begging her depression to let her just try and move ahead. how I take this is actually kinda personal. I see her as someone who has big dreams and says she can get to where she needs to go like everyone else but she just keeps failing, even though she's trying her absolute hardest. and she just keeps trying and trying, and see's it as weak for her to keep failing while everyone else is perfectly fine and she just keeps tripping and stumbling and rolling and overworking herself to try and keep up but repetitively fails and this guy is her friend and she keeps saying "no no I'm fine" like she can handle it but he watches her and knows she can't but she would never admit it. The words in the subtitled translation are what also helps hit this home for me because of the words "so much going on in that noises head of hers" and also the lines "she doesn't care what happens right?" as if she is just lazy and the people don't see that she is genuinely trying her hardest to keep up and keep trying even if she fails the words "rolling girl is at her end" and in the cover "rolling girl has given it her all, it's just too far the dreams she recalls" and the voices hurting her head, it's the people doubting her and making her goal even farther and harder to achieve and people doubt she will make it and that she just simply doesn't care. this makes it even harder for her to just calm down and take a break because she see's that as not possible, and she just continues to overwork herself to try and reach her goal, but her friend stops her, the chorus is kinda like a cry of "one more time, come on I can do this, I can make it" she just tries so so hard. and when he stops her and forces her to take a break and shows her its all right the words "you must be tired" and "you must be tired of doing this" and she finally takes a breather and accepts that its ok. you guys see a girl who is suicidal, mental, insane, or bullied, what I see is a girl who just wants to prove that she can make it and works harder than everyone else but is seen as someone who isn't even trying and doesn't care about the outcome. that is why this song continues to be my all time favorite and when I can personally relate to this point of view it can still pull at my heart and make me wanna cry but it makes me feel like I can get by. The rolling girl works hard despite what ever may hold her back and isn't making excuses (i feel like the must be something making it harder on her and holding her back and that's why she tries to hard yet still fails), she just wants to prove she can do it.

Even in a depressive mindset you seem to yearn for help and try to hint that you need help but you can never do it in an openly or directly. Or you mask your feelings "under cover" through your wording. Chances are, Miku is at, or very near the point of ending her own life. I want anyone who reads this to know, you are valued. I know you don't think you deserve the help The boy can't stand seeing this anymore and confronts her. Grabbing her to stop her from getting hurt again or possibly even a suicide attempt. Her kneeling on the floor gives me the impression that things are different this time. Maybe they've already argued for a long while. Again she makes the excuse *"one more time"* and we see her holding her arm while kneeling the same way she says "one more time" in the other parts of the song. To which we see the boy repeat it again as a question. Fed up of the excuse. *"Just a little more. Waiting till the day I see my end."* She wants to continue living like this until the day she dies, or she ends it herself. The reason I believe this isn't a suicide is due to the transition into full color. Representing Miku finally being given a reason to live again. The use of color to represent emotion is very common. And a transition from monotone to color feels like a perfect representation of going from an emotionless to an emotional state.

this is definitely about self-harm. "rolling" is a metaphor for cutting - and the boy at the end tries to help her (i'll stop your breath from rolling out / for now: he's trying to stop her sadness, but you can't do that forever.)

I think that "Rolling" means "Living" and when she says "One more time, One more time, Please just lemme roll for another time" she is asking to live and be free for a little time but that guy that is her depression told her that the onmly way to be free is to stop breathing so she suicide. (My opinion)
when does roll mean cutting? I've never heard that before in my entire life....then again anyone who cuts is meaningless to me so maybe I've just been too ignorant of their existence to know their slangs for what they do.

i interpret this song about smiling depression, which is where someone always has a smile but is hurting inside. they mask their pain with a smile, but is always in a cycle of depression. i almost have this feeling, but i’m not diagnosed so i’m not gonna assume anything. with the lines “one more time, one more time” it shows how they live on with the smile masking the pain. idk i’m not very good at describing things but that’s just my opinion you can interpret it however you want

The best ways I find to feel better are to start exercising and to force myself into a routine. Working out is very important for the body, seeing as how our bodies are built for pressure. If you cannot put pressure on the body, it collapses mentally, and eventually physically. Routines such as waking up on time, eating at specific times, and more, they can help you to feel fulfilled. Happiness is temporary, fulfillment is much more long term. Doing this is really important for your recovery! And don't worry about doing anything too difficult either, just starting with stretching or looking for workouts help! This song really hits home for me, as I've been struggling with mental health issues pretty much my whole life. The worst of it was when I used to burn myself with a lighter multiple times a day. Somehow, I met a guy who's very patient and understanding. He's been there for me and helped me through some really dark times. He told me that he wants to make me smile. He's one of the only reasons why I don't want to end it. There are other reasons that hold me back from the decision, but he makes me not want to do it in the first place.
I know it’s late now but here’s a theory of mine for «rolling girl» this song is obviously about a girl being bully at school, and in this case - Miku. she’s suffering from depression, who’s appears to be a boy in the PV. but she always has high hopes for the future, for her to be “accepted” and to be a part of the community. and to do that, she needs to “kills” the disease inside her - the depression. she believes that she is “fine”, she is “okay”, and continue living like that for a long time. and «rolling», I saw somebody explain it as “self-harm”, but I think it’s not. in my opinion, rolling, in this case, is actually “trying”, like the action “rolling”, which I will explain as “rolling down from a hill without knowing if there’s any dangerous”. she’s trying to live, without knowing how this could deface and ruin her. she always says “one more time”, she will try to live again tomorrow, and fail, and fail, and fail. until the boy can’t stand it anymore and tell her to “quit”. she couldn’t get acceptance from the community, but she finally accepts herself, and die peacefully. «rolling girl» has so many meanings that my awful English grammar can’t explain, but I love the song as it matches some of our’s emotions and thoughts even though some of us haven’t been through it yet. I love wowaka music, and he will forever live in my heart.

Something I notice and really appreciate in the video is when the main music theme starts playing you see Miku standing behind/beside the speakers symbolizing that she sees herself as an unimportant background character along with the boy that symbolizes her depression, it shows that no one cares to see/can’t see it because they don’t see her
my interpretation: a girl trying to deal with depression ends up climbing a hill where she slips and fell, she gets hurt badly, she but loves to feel the pain, so everyday after school she "goes to the hill I know I'll always fall from" and one of her friends notices and tries to stop her, she has been wondering why he even cares and he ends up driving her from hurting herself anymore.
Singers Pixle I don't think the rolling is meant literally. I think "climbing up the hill, that I'll always fall from" is something she tries but fails at, like pleasing other people. I think she just tries to fit in so she changes herself in way that hurts her and in the end they won't even work out. The guy at the end could've seen through that and wants her to stop it because he sees how damaged she is from all that "rolling" aka changing herself. But those are just my thoughts.
