If only All phlebotomist listen to their patients like this😩

It stuns me when I hear that people don't ask their patients about their own veins, let alone not listen to them! People usually know those things because other healthcare professionals have made those observations in the past after a struggling to access their veins!!! Like cmon

@tob7449 I draw blood often throughout my day. I always ask the patient for their recommendations on the best spot to draw. But our bodies change, the spot worked for them last month may not work best for them this time.

Highly recommend assessing the forearm for a vein to cannulate. Insertion near or in a joint (wrist, AC/bend of the elbow) dooms your patient to a constantly beeping pump, mechanical phlebitis, possible infiltration/extravasation and surely an IV restart in less than 24 hours (the nurse following on the next shift won’t like it either!) It is important to learn best practice for vascular access including placing PIVs in the forearm - learn to palpate not just visualize veins when selecting a site for IV insertion. Tourniquets that are too tight, catheters that are too large to allow adequate blood flow and weird insertion sites (fingers, chest, boobs, feet, etc) all are a big NO and do nothing helpful for patients - they can lead to patient harm, lawsuits and loss of your nursing license.

@bubblephobiaoftheshire 4 месяца назад
Lol quit trying to scare people, it takes four hours before tissue damage is done if a tourniquet is left on. Nobody is starting an IV in the boobs, and those other places are all if someone is desperate to get an IV in. If a catheter is too big it'll just miss the vein. You must be in management or one of those wonderful nursing educators. Probably better if you just stopped talking all together.

It's unbelievable how many people try to place an IV in the antecubital fossa. They look at me funny when I tell them if you can't put it in my forearm, put it in my hand.
@gixelz
@gixelz 2 месяца назад
Yeah, nobody is losing a license by getting an IV in somewhere. In the ED we get one wherever we can, and sometimes on the floor you don't have a lot of choices. Stop scaring people by saying "oH bUT yOuR licenSe!!!!" 😅

Thats actually the best way to redo an iv after the pt cant keep that arm straigjt for 6 hours while the fluid gets done. Yet it is what I would call the emergency spot for those in critical need of iv meds and fluids. Hate them tho.

I’m a phlebotomist and have a question about something I saw today with syringe draws with a butterfly! While drawing, if there is air in the syringe while filling and you let the syringe bounce back, is that dangerous? Where does the air go?
@cavelleardiel
@cavelleardiel 9 месяцев назад
I asked the same question while in school. There is a valve that will block any air going back into the needle to the patient

Umm. Youre not supposed to anchor that damn close to the vein in the first place so your thumb should not be in the way. Second people call veins jumping and rolling when they miss. Its just a classic excuse for literally missing the vein. Tighten your cuff/tourn more to expose the veins more. Puncture the skin very gently to avoid anything moving at the bottom. Understand the depth of vein very well so you have the right angle and nothing with never jump or roll. Also dont anchor so damn hard if you think it will "jump" or "roll"
@patrickkelley836
@patrickkelley836 6 месяцев назад
In fact, veins do roll. Anatomy suggests that the older the patient, the less foundation they have underneath their skin to keep the veins in place. That is, a geriatric patient likely has less collagen formation and elastin than does a young adult. Even so, genetics also factors in as patients of all ages can naturally have bulging veins. Nevertheless, the need for anchoring is important but to say that rolling veins is just a “classic excuse” means you missed basic anatomy and it’s functional consequences

It helps people in school like me, and people who have certificates but not licenses, also like me. I’m a phlebotomist with my National certification but not state license so it helps to frequent these types of videos to not forget the lessons and see different ways people do blood draws and Iv correctly and incorrectly. I also show these to my instructor and fellow mates and it’s a good talking piece.
