lol. the comments. " he can't sing" " bands out of tune". Rollins band is raw.. brutal, intense. Henry is singing from the rage in his gut.. not supposed to be melodic. its messaged for people to attack an issue of importance and do it with vigilante determination.
I had End of Silence on constant repeat during my divorce. Songs like "Tearing", "You Didn't Need" and of course "Low Self Opinion" felt like Henry had a direct line to my soul. It helped me through a very dark and difficult time.
I'm not some milquetoast millennial. Proud Gen Xer. That lineup with Andrew Weiss on bass and writing most of the riffs was killer. You can not like it, but don't slam it.
Gunkey O'Stanky i go bk to the 9:30 club and the bad brains days, city gardens, cb's , the kyber, an poloza, saw them rt b4 they dropped the end, and a saw him 6 to 7 times there after, it was bluesy rock and hard, but U HAVE NO FUKIN IDEA wtf ur talkin abt at all, mann i can go on, and on , cuz i have SEEN THOUSANDS of shows and ALL ACROSS THE BOARD, i grewup in a jazz drummers crib, played army on shitty sticky bar floors, became a musician myself, and WHN I SAY I HAVE SEEN IT ALL i can only hope u have s|n the shit ive seen, i have neva excluded any genre, an i go hard to find the top kats, im not a kat tht thinks music WAS BETTA, i find new shit every day, got n early on the internet, and use it to my advantage, U HAVE NO FUKIN IDEA ABT WHT U THINK U SAID, i saw rollins 3 times b4 tht poloza tour, an 3 lps after, DO U RESEARCH, and yes i ve seen miles, pfunk, voivod, rush , allan holdsworth, epmd, james brown, deftones, pe,chili peppers, mind u all in the early mid 80s, sum 70s and in my 20s in the 90s till now ive seen soooo fukin much, im a live music type, i see the reason for wht a band does, an dont compare across genres, yes theres top kats in a genre, but if ur a snobby rush nerd i ve seen thm many many times but keep my wits, an kno they are good for wht they do, and most artist will tell u dnt compare DIGG tht and just tht wht they are doing, cuz they admire other kats waaaay more then u kno, ive caught a bunch of top kats checking out they own personal fav artist, an aint fukn snobs, digg urself homie.
End of Silence was the soundtrack of my senior year of high school and college. I was an angry geek and the songs on this album spoke to me. I'm 41 now and I still listen to it.
One thing I admire about Henry Rollins is that he is filled with such fierce enthusiasm when he performs live! I remember him saying in an old interview that back when he was attending grade school in Washing D.C. where he grew up, he hated having to remain seated in classrooms for long periods of time. He would always be desperate to want to get up and start moving around because that was highly therapeutic for him to do. He would try to keep his cool when being required to stay seated, that he would clench his teeth real hard while trying to focus on his work assignments, but most of the time it was almost unbearable for him due to his eventual diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. You can pretty much tell in this clip that after he finishes his performance that it's way too difficult for him to remain seated while talking to Dennis. As he is seated on that chair, he keeps his body moving in a peculiar motion. Nevertheless, Henry has made a tremendous success of himself not only as a vocalist in his own alternative grunge metal band, but as a stand up comic and as an author. He is quite a guy! ~Dutch
I don't have AD/HD but I sure as hell went through the same thing in school. Just attempting to discuss it with anyone got me falsely diagnosed as a narcissist, which I certainly am not. That was ~35 years ago. Any kind of creative drive, or even merely kinetic drive (the natural desire for young boys, almost always boys, to be in motion instead of sitting still dying of boredom) can make school absolutely excruciating. It does NOT make them narcissists.
You sleep alone at night You never wonder why All this bitterness wells up inside you You always victimize So you can criticize yourself And all those around you (truly amazing lyrics)
It's disappointing that guys like Miller and Bill Maher never really let Henry speak without interrupting him with lame jokes. He's really a (self taught) highly intelligent person. He deserves his time to speak. In my opinion, they most likely do it because they don't want to be upstaged by a guest.
Dennis Miller is a fucking dumbass. You hear him pretend he has an excuse to be a square conservative because he is old, but then Henry is one year older than Miller. The problem is not Miller's age -- it's that he's a dumbass. By contrast, Henry never sold out his political values even if he made some money in the music biz.
that is awesome ! art touches people like the artist will never believe. I actually discovered this song on a episode of Bevis and butt-head when they made fun of the music videos, and I thought to myself why are they joking this song? it sound pretty epic to me, I didn't even hear the vocals that well so at the time i didn't know what this song was about. but I remember the final words in the song " Low S.O. Low S.O." i looked it up recently just by typing those words into google , the official music video popped up and I watched it, and listened to those lyrics and I was like "OMG this shit is DEEP! OMG i feel like he's talking directly to me" it was an amazing experience
It's funny you say that. The first time i was aware of Rollins was in Sons of Anarchy and he was so good at playing a nazi you couldn't convince me he wasn't.
This might be the realest talk show interview I've seen. Miller did make a couple of lame jokes but mostly he let Henry vent to him and seemed to genuinely want to understand his point of view.
The first girl who broke my heart I listened repeatedly to End of Silence and he got me to pick my head up and got me through it. Many years later I called the radio station he had a show on and thank him. He humbly said “I’m glad music was there for you” We also chatted a bit about Westley Willis. Much respect for Henry
@Dick Fageroni The whole incident was shady. Rollins was ordered into the house at gunpoint after his friend was shot and killed. Rollins managed to escape death by running through the house and out the back door.
I was fortunate enough to see Rollins Band "Weight Tour" and im gonna tell ya, Henry gave 110% that night. The venue was a small theater in Rhode island somewhere. They played so tight, if you closed your eyes you'd think you were listening to the album. I was close enough to Henry that every time he spit, he was spraying me! And that was often. He came out with the most intensity ive ever seen from any human being. It was like he flicked a switch before he performed each song. Very into the moment he was. No B.S. if someone wasnt listening to the songs, he got offended and told them to go outside and let someone else have the spot on the floor. People were mesmerized by his existence that night. He had total control of the whole venue and all that were attending. The man is a genius.
This was the show I discovered Henry, and became my favorite singer of all time! Rollins Band was so awesome to see live, so much energy, he gave everything on stage! He said when he couldn’t do it like that he would walk away and he did!
I was 14 when I found "the end of silence" in a sam the record man. Despite having garbaged most of my cd collection since, I still have my copy I bought over 20 years ago!
Henry is fucking awesome... I live in Vancouver and have had the privilege of seeing him do spoken word shows several times... those shows are so inspirational and entertaining .... cant for covid to go the fuck away and see him tour again
I remember back in the 90s buying the album that this single was featured upon and rockin' the hell out of it, then I discovered that Rollins had a genius mind outside of music, I'd say that's what sort of helped me to shape my own life's philosophy, listening to his interviews and stand up. I admire the hell outta the guy.
Extraordinary artist...What rock was I living under? This guy smashes, but with sharp intelligence and brutal physicality. And, I've learned, now in 2024 he has published a total of 27 books (many of them travel logs of worldwide adventure, expertly and insightfully crafted) with his OWN publishing company; endlessly tours as a "spoken word" artist world wide...Hats off to Henry Rollins! :))
If you had told me back in 1986 that Hank would go on to have a hit video on MTV I would have thought you were on PCP-laced crack. But he did it. The dude is just amazing, he never gives up, just keeps going. We love ya Henry!
I felt weird when I bought this album back in '92, was and still am a metalhead, but still, there was something there that just grabs you and grows on you. And 30 years after, still listen to this band and love the fantastic human being this guy became. Not for everyone, but for a lot more people than one can imagine :)
Thankyou WFA's for that response. What's cool is that with NO words it somehow quickly led me to the realisation that self hate can be even easier for some of us. I know that probably wasn't your point at all, but I just think engaging in trains of thought and calmly communicating them can lead anywhere: to find hope where it seems gone, to provoke thought where it's needed. I might shut up now coz I'm starting to undermine my original post. Such a paradox, expression, not to mention reception... I guess why hR elicits such vehement opinions from positive to negative. Ok now really going to shut up 👍
Hard band with lots of reasons to delight the crowds back in the day. The crowds were indeed delighted. The players remain cool and sometimes more when interviewing .
When MIller says "There's a lot of human flotsam and jetsam out there" - I really don't want to hear him talk anymore. He too fucking high on himself as a judge of other people - Rollins is his absolute opposite. Rollins is awesome, and Miller would not shut the fuck up.
I saw Henry Rollins at toads place in new haven in the late 90s, it was spoken word, I think he’s a pretty smart dude. It was so crowded that you couldn’t walk a foot in front of you.
@@christopherseat9871 Yeah, I never had to deal with them after Andrew. Saw them in 1987 and 1991. Once he quit I had no interest at all. I think I was mistaken because I've seen some pretty intense Melvin Gibbs (a monster bassist with a sick resume') footage in the last few years. Everything Rollins Band did in the late 80's to mid 90's sounds even better now.
