See what's really amazing to me is that I'm Roma descendant with a lot of inherited traits, but no passed down culture, but the way the men are dancing is what I did all growing up before ever being told that's "not how people dance." And I don't mean typical 2-year-old stepping to dance. I mean well into middle school, and even still now when I'm by myself, that's just how I naturally move to music.
I first watch this video in 2010, since which time I have been improving my own dancing on a daily basis. Rewatching it now, at least I can understand what they are doing. Great video. I have never forgotten it. Love the synch at the end.
All Romani dancing has forms of tap dance, clapping and raised arms. This particular style is unique to Eastern European Romani. In western Europe the Romani of Spain brought us the originals for Flamenco music which has gone on to greatly influence most Latin music. Some believe the Guitar was originally a Romani instrument as the name is from Indian "geet" = song & "tar" = string. Guitar is obviously related to the Zitar of India.
The foot work is based on Indian martial arts. It represents shiva. Also it's impressive how a beat is not missed. This is awesome !!!!! This is like intricate like the tabla
Gypsies (or Romani, as they call themselves, the Gypsy word for "men") originated in northern India 1,000 years ago. Their language, called Romani, is undoubtedly related to Hindu and other Indian languages (named Indo-Aryan). Nobody knows why they left India.
still i belive, there are no such groupps dancers to represnt OUR ROMANIAN GYPSy DANCEES ! MAYBE I AM IMPARTIAL,BUT YOU WILL NEVER SEE MORE EXCITED DANCE...BUT ROUMANIANS ! seva
We have been trying to fight that forever. If they ask "what" I am, I say "Rromani". That is always met with "huh? Whazzat??" in the States. I cringe and say "we are also called 'Gypsy' by mistake" and give them an education.
This type of dance is a variant of the dance played by all nations of the former Austrian Empire called "verbunk". Just search this site for "verbunk" or "barbunc" for the Romanian variant. The Gipsies play it though in a much wilder style.
Thank U, kind Sir Charbax, the Queen not withstanding, for posting. Certainly puts Riverdance 2 shame. And, all viewers, certainly, never, never, never, insult a Rom lady, she will take a strip of her skirt and render you marhime. Yes, Lady Gonzales, at least the Rom can dance. Thank goodness for U tube. Romafest.com it is. Blessings be unto all of your houses. With warmest greetings and love from Samarqand, Jovano
I will fight with every muscle in my body to protect the Roma Gypsies from the persecution and suffering they have endured and continue to endure. I am very displeased with what Sarkozy is doing and will let the Roma know they have my support. Sometimes there is power in one voice. Roma can come stay with me if anyone gives them trouble.
Romania is peacefull country with all its beautiful mauntains and nature... You have to see Romania first to understand how it is... We have to promote more to show the reality, the culture and natural beauty... As being a Turkish Person living in Romania, I may say in brief "Come and see Romania!"...
@gogoasacenusie Not all Romani (as in "Gypsies") go under the name "Roma". It is just a branch that do. The name Romani (as in "Gypsies") derives from the Indian Sanskrit word "Raman". They originate from the Rajasthani / Punjab region of Northwest India.
@jacobfkarlsson In Iran there was the major Elamite kingdom which was centered in SW Iran prior to Persians and Medes invading from the NE. The Elamite language is believed to be related to the original Dravidian languages of Indian prior to Indo-Aryan languages such as Persian (farsi etc) & Sanskrit (which Hindi, Panjabi etc come from) got introduced. No-one knows the Elamite DNA but it is possible it could have been H or K.
hmm cool:D we are a small coutry in the middle of europe near austria or hungary. no, I didnt recognize anyone of them in this video, because i didnt see their faces on the performance, but i know they had the same shirts like this:Dwhere are you from?
Yes, I know that the word "gypsy" was originally meant as an insult, and it was directed at just about all nomads and not just the Rroma people. But recently, in many places, people have gotten so used to the term "gypsy" meaning "Rroma," that not many can tell the difference. So I've gotten used to people saying "gypsy" but meaning "Rroma." Also, Rroma and Romanian are not the same group. Sorry if my first comment was confusing. I hope I cleared things up.
Gypsies live all over the world. For example in this region: not just in Romania, but in Hungary also, and because I am a folk-dancer, I can say, that Romanian dances are totally different from the gypsy dance, and I can say the same about Hungarian dances. For example in Transylvania in some areas the hungarian dances and the romanian dances are similar, (but not the same also!!!), but I think the gypsies has a totally different and particular dance and culture from the other!
@IAmSoRich Aryan is not even a word meaning race but is from the Indo-Iranian word "Arya" meaning "Noble, Honorable, Upright, Godly etc". The same word exists in the German language but is spelled "Ehre" which is where the English word Honor derives. Also in Germanic languages is the word "Earl" (also spelt Jarl & pronounced as Yarl). In the Romani the word exists as Rai which derives directly from Arya as Romani unlike Europeans speak Sanskrit via a Rajasthani & Panjabi regional prakrit.
for those that want to look further to see that everything I have written is factual and not some selected theory then for the history of Iran & India prior to Indo-Iranian immigration coming from the North search Elamo-Dravidian. This is a language group showing relationship and ties between the two prior to the Indo-European language group being introduced.
@nazarjoker123 They don't come from Romania or from India. They are one of the Lost Tribes of Israel - Dan to be specific. They used to live just south of Lebanon but sometime during ancient biblical days, they left. Or they were taken into captivity with the other 10 northern tribes and later they dispersed through Europe and beyond.
