Roman Emperors-Real Faces-The Dominate 

I know what you mean because the people who own the house of my 4x great aunt Henrietta aka hetty and my 4x great uncle George Washington Shriver are making a movie about the civilians during the battle of Gettysburg and just like how you the emperor’s faces moving the people that are making the movie are using the same things but instead of emperors it’s going to be Civilians and soldiers and Generals and President Abraham Lincoln who all lived and fought in the American civil war and to be more specific the bloody Three day battle of Gettysburg Which was Fought on three days July 1st, 2nd and 3rd 1863 and I am totally looking forward to seeing the movie because when people tell me about the battle of Gettysburg all they talk about is the soldiers no offense ment but when people talk about just the soldiers they are leaving out a big piece and picture of the battle of Gettysburg and that picture is how did the civilians Witness the battle how did they fight and how did they mange to help others and what I mean by that is like during the battle of Gettysburg my ancestors were affected by the battle of Gettysburg in many ways like My 4x great grandfather Jacob weikert and his wife My 4x great grandmother Sarah Ickes and their Kids my 3x great grandfather Emanuel weikert along with his wife My 3x great grandmother Maria Catherine Shriver and their Kids my 3x great aunt Sarah and my 3x great uncle Edward along with my 4x great cousins molly and Sadie who both sadly died young from tuberculosis and their neighbors Kid mrs Matilda aka Tillie pierce Alleman who wrote the only civilian account of the battle of Gettysburg but my ancestors had to share my 4x great grandparents house and barn with wounded soldiers and the reason was because my ancestors house and barn was used as a Union field hospital for the 5th corps army of the Potomac and like my ancestors had to fight the battle of Gettysburg and their were two that fought and they were my 4x great grandfather Jacob weikert’s Son William Henry Weikert who fought in a skirmish on June 26th and Jacobs daughter Rebeccas husband my 4x great uncle George E Kitzmiller who served valiantly in the ranks of Company K First Pennsylvania reserves infantry regiment.

It wasn't a great period for Roman art. Some of the portraiture is better than others. Julian, for instance, is pretty good. Constanius Chlorus and Helena.. the sculpture has an almost cartoon quality. Panagiotis probably had to take some license to achieve a realistic result. The Romans were great engineers. They were never great sculptors and did their best when copying Greek works. It has been speculated that they were bringing so many influences into the city from so many cultures that it made it impossible to develop a truly great, truly Roman art. That may be what is reflected in these busts.

@@maryandersondearing3053 that and the fact that after the crisis of the third century the quality of sculpture declined (as with everything else, so many people died from plagues, war and famines during that time that the know-how died with them) it doesnt help that there wasnt a lot of time to be doing sculptures for a lot of these people. it was a rough time

Diocletian was born in Doclea (modern day Montenegro), Maximianus in Sirmium (modern day Serbia), Galerius in Serdica (modern day Bulgaria), Constantine in Naissus (modern day Serbia), Licinius in Zajecar (also Serbia) and so on....

I was actually going to say the same thing however they also look European Spanish! My family on my fathers side is far more mestizo (mixed native american with spanish) so they dont have the same look however my mothers side is full blooded spanish, early generation immigrants to the US and they care these features! @@versmex87 They were still latin speaking descendants of ethnic Italians who settled those areas. Regardless, most experts believe these ancient peoples (from that area) to be close descendants of the same group of indo-europeans who settled the lower European/ upper Mediterranean area. Physically speaking, the ancient balkan peoples looked very similar to their italian brothers. The roman people would have never accepted them otherwise.

@@_R0MA_ I know a lot of emperors where not Latin or from Italy. I think it shows how we are actually descendants of a lot of ethnicities mixed together. And how we Italians have a lot of traits in common with our ancestors, in fact Italians have extremely heterogeneous characteristics (it's not uncommon for Italians to have blonde hair and blue eyes) it's part of our history. But when I see these people faces I recognize some traits that are extremely common also today. I guess the philosophy of the Roman empire was not being Italian but being of the empire, with all the different faces, languages and ethnicities and this philosophy is reflected on the Italians of today: very different traits, dialects and regional cultures. I guess I'm just an Italian who recognizes Italian traits after all if it makes sense haha

@YouShallNotPass nope, that's false. The Christian emperors except Constantine are practically unknown, especially the Eastern Emperors. Is Christianity the scapegoat for anything you don't like in that period.

@YouShallNotPass False, he was seen as a dreamer, who led Rome into a disastrous war he was not suited to lead, he was not his uncle when it came to be a leader of men and as a general. His reign was too short. His only claim for fame was his not being christian, otherwise he was nothing remarkable, he destroyed the work previous emperors since Aurelian had done to restore the empire by going to war with Persia. He dreamed to be the new Alexander.

@@chrisgrech7992 Pretty much everything you said was false. Nobody during this time period could ever hope to be as good as Constantine. Regardless Julian was a great leader of soldiers and it was his victories against the Germans along the Rhine that allowed him to free up the legions in the West for the Persian offensive. Prior to his invasion the Persians broke a treaty they made with Constantius II, and started invading the eastern provinces. Conflict with Persia was inevitable but Julian was hoping to bring it to a quick and decisive end. His strategy for invading Persia itself was sound but he was betrayed by his general Procopius who didn’t supply him with the troops he needed.

How is he supposed to do Valentinian dynasty and all the latter emperors? There are no preserved portraits and sculptures, only portraits on coins, which are very less detailed and stylized. I mean I would like to see him try, but I think that's impossible to do.

He did not kill his family, on contrary he protected his half brothers and sisters, one his sisters was his favorite and exerted great influence. He also had no prominent nose, you are confusing the colossal head at the museo capitolini as if it was a real life portrait. Which you can get from the statue at the entrance of the lateran.

@@deirdreevangelista856 Well we DO know that he legalized Christianity throughout the empire and heavily promoted it, put an end to the rampant corruption that characterized the period known as The Crisis of the 3rd Century, and made peace with the Sasanian Persian (in fact he was one of the few Roman emperors that they actually spoke favorably about). So, yeah based on that I say he was a pretty cool dude! 😁👍

@@deirdreevangelista856 You won't be disappointed. The Italian people have contributed at least as much to Western Civilization as any other. Think about it, the Renaissance AND the Romans. Not to mention Columbus was Italian, without him, you don't have the major shift in power on the world stage that favored Europeans over everyone else for the past five hundred years. You will understand the role the great things the Romans made possible for all later Western Civilization. I daresay, the Roman's importance cannot be overstated, only understated. In a very real sense all modern peoples of Western Civilization are but more evolved forms of the Late Romans of the 400's. Here's and example, the Frankish state of Charlemagne of 800 A.D. was like this, they were more like the Romans of the 400's than the Franks of the 300's, when they formed in response to the threat the Goths and Huns posed. Then his realm is the one that was the most influential to later Western Europe, he earned the "father of Europe" label some historians placed on him, it's very legit.

I recall reading that Julian saw himself as a Greek first and as a Roman second.

Most people don't realize that we are really late late Romans culturally, there are traditions that have passed unbroken from that time to this, such as thinking negatively of "Vandals" for example, well, his apostate actions made him unpopular, mistake #1, and even greater mistake #2 pursuing an offensive war again the Persians! The Romans were in NO POSITION to pursue an offensive war of any sort in that time, they needed to consolidate and recover from the wars of Constantine's IDIOTIC heirs that saw three sons and two cousins be put in a perfect position by him to create a Diocletian style team approach to managing the empire if they had had the good sense and intelligence to work together. Nope, despite being close relatives who should have loved each other and been willing so control their ambitions, the fools all ended up dead and another relative, Julian was Emperor, he needed to do 2 things, 1, restore stability, and 2. restore the government and set up a solid line of succession with a man who he could trust, not some ambitious fool who would turn on him the moment he turned his back. Instead, the fool waged a religious war against the majority religion of the Empire at the time, including the most powerful citizens, so even if he had survived the war against the Persians, he was very likely to be assassinated within a short time, then while doing that he also went up against the one enemy able to match his forces in the field. Able to field larger armies than his and possessed of units his army had difficulty countering, strong cavalry. Of course, he failed on both fronts. Because of his failure and his religious/culture war from that time to now he's been portrayed in a mostly negative light in an unbroken chain, generation after generation.

@@panagiotisconstantinou Hmmm, I think in the past statement to you that I stumbled across the main reason the Roman Empire collapsed at least to my way of thinking. Chaos is the great enemy of Empires and states, as the saying goes "you can't build a castle on shifting sands"! What created the Roman chaos? Ambitious men who ruthlessly pursued becoming Emperor, then couldn't/wouldn't control themselves once they succeeded because that wasn't who they were, too many of them were big risk taker/gambler sorts undaunted by adversity such as here with Julian, "it's impossible for a Roman army of the composition and size he was leading to conquer the Sassanian Persian Empire of that time" sort of adversity. He would "go for it" anyway. Like our system is flawed in the modern Western Countries that makes it more likely that some clever charmer who has no real leadership talent will be elected to a important political office that requires some leadership skill to perform properly, but they easily defeat the person who isn't charming but would have been a competent leader/manager because they know how to be popular, so it was in Rome, too many men like him, too few like Antoninus Pius, who was probably the true best Emperor of them all. I would say better than Trajan because Trajan marched east and fought an UNNECESSARY war with the Parthians, when he could have finished conquering the British Isles, or expand into central Europe, which the victory over Dacia made possible, or take Germania once and for all. Had Trajan done that later Roman history might have been different, they would have had a stronger presence in the lands that the Goths and Huns later invaded, they might have been able to stop them. Nope, Trajan takes lands that his successor deems unsustainable, so it was a waste of time and resources and nothing lasting to show for it. The other moves were much more likely to have been still extant in the 300's. Augustus, he was also great for stability, but his moves for setting up a good quality successor was inferior to the system the "Five Good Emperors" set up. He tried to set up a monarchal style line of succession, which was how they did it with the family government "Pater Familias" system. Remember, Tiberius was a general, but he was also his wife's son he adopted officially. He didn't look around and find some younger man of exceptional ability like himself, unrelated to him by blood or marriage and make him an heir as they did. Julius Caesar was simply lucky Octavian proved to be the exceptional man he proved to be. Octavian himself was not so lucky. Literally, he had no living male relatives of this level of ruling ability when he tried to set up line of succession, but he tried to put them in it anyway unlike most of the "Five" Marcus Aurelius was the one who did with that incompetent, half wit, moron Commodus. Interestingly, even the fictional alternate choice of "Maximus" in the movie "Gladiator" is also a poor choice, maybe that's why it was such a hit, it remained consistent with Marcus' lack of wisdom of a successor, an simple man who is gifted at war and Generalship, but desires only to return to his megafarm and run it. Anyway, I think it's that the system made it more likely that almost only men who became Emperor, or could get within reach of becoming Emperor remain the sort of men like that of the 1st and 2nd Triumvirates, violent men willing to take terrible risks to themselves and the Empire for power and glory, and were short sighted, they were willing to murder anyone else for their ambitions even their own kin. That's not really the sort of people you want at the top of your society and being the only guys able to become supreme leader/Emperor because you have the problems the Romans had throughout their Empire's history. They wanted, desired, and needed stability, but their system favored putting extremely violent, chaos generating men into the leadership positions. Yes, they are exciting, dynamic historically interesting individuals, but they are what killed the Roman Empire, sort of the way the incompetent charmers are harming Western Civilization in our time!
