The Ermine Street Guard in action, with help from Dutch, Germans, Italians and Belgians. You can see them marching, forming a testudo and a training fight between two legionnaries with javelin-training behind them.
The event took place in the archaeological park in Xanten, Germany: www.apx.lvr.de
The Ermine Street Guard: www.erminestreetguard.co.uk/
Xanten is a small German town near Duisburg. It is mostly known for its archaeological park in which one can visit the former Roman town Colonia Ulpia Traiana, a settlement of veterans near the Rhine from 110 A.D. to 275 A.D., when it was destroyed by the Franks. Today the archaeologists try to bring the Roman era back to life with experimental archaeology. Also, Xanten is the mythological birthplace of Siegfried, the hero of the Nibelungen-saga.

Cool. These legionaries are of 4 nationalities (German, Dutch, Italian, Belgian), they listen to latin commands and act together based on that. They probably had only one or two days to "get used" to eachother. The standardization of army commands, fighting style, and drafts from all over the Roman empire really made sure they always had enough feet to trample the ground with.

It's kind of cool seeing them practice traditional Roman attacks there at the end. Romans were instructed to thrust rather than hack or slash, as I remember the reasoning being "a two-inch deep stab is deadlier than a long slash across the chest." It looks a bit more awkward than I imagined it, but the logic both makes sense, and it is accurate.
@Inquisitor_Vex
@Inquisitor_Vex Год назад
It’s probably more to do with thrusting in a forwards and backwards motion rather than swinging from side to side means you can stand in even closer order. Which has all kinds of benefits of its own. (I’m not denying the bit about the 3inch wound though. I’m just saying as a reason for why they adopted the tactic. Probably the thought process is “how can we stay close so we don’t get broken up and killed” than “I’m pretty sure stabbing them is 35% more efficient than slashing” especially since they’d be both stabbing and slashing anyway if there was no specific fighting style mandated. Sorry I kinda went off. I’m really high, forgive me.)

@lazios
@lazios 8 лет назад
+Isaiah MacDonald Not exactly.. least not entirely. History is much more complicated than we think, sure, Rome had many wars with Germanic peoples (see for example the wars Roman-Germanic), but over the centuries, there were many covenants also (with whole tribes). And not just when the empire was in decline but even when was in great health. Without forgetting that there were many Roman general of Germanic origin (and many soldiers also), especially after three hundred AD. The same Arminius (Battle of Teutoburg), grew up and was trained as a Roman, in fact, he was a commander of the Roman cavalry when destroyed the Varus legions (I'm simplifying... its history is much too complex). Sry, I don't speak Eng but I hope you understand me in any case.

Column of Trajan was built around 108 AD, after defeat of Dacia, which is depicted there. Trajan commanded imperial troops, 150 years after Marian Reforms, so normally, they look very uniform since their gear was provided by state. But apart from roman empire (at that time) and elite king bodyguards (other states), nobody used uniforms or uniform gear, since there was no centralized gear manufacturer.

The Ermine Street Guard gives the same parts of equipment to every member, but this was a mixed presentation with different groups.

+Michele Vogliardi “VogliuzGuy” LOL I agreed with you BUT... In the last years of the Roman Empire most of the Legionaries where hired in the Balcans and in modern Germany, Ukraine and Lybia / Algeria (read Wikipedia) expecially for the commanders, the explorators / scouts on horses and archers... SO... The guttural idioms spoken by those former "tribesmen" now enlisted (by necessity and or self will) in the roman legions where often spoken or, if they tried to speak latin, they retained their guttural accent... More or less it still happens when a German speaking person tries to speak a Latin Language like modern Italian or Spanish... The results are almost hilarious... Just like the middle italian trying to speak English... ALL THE WORLD IS THE SAME PLACE; my friend !!! No matter the time and men... LOL

TribuneTestudo The Italian dialects all come from the Latin language and they all share the same type of pronunciation, also very similar to the spanish one (and spain was the most colonised province by the latins). So the english way of speaking it, is surely the worst.
@PoliticallyDonutTasty
@PoliticallyDonutTasty 8 лет назад
+Michele “VogliuzGuy” Vogliardi The pronunciation of Latin evolved over the centuries and even evolved in other languages. How can you then say if the "Northern Accent" hurts if you don't even know the real pronunciation of Latin words? Maybe the "Northern" pronunciation is more closer to the Roman pronunciation then the modern Mediteranian? And don't say that the Italian pronunciation has to be the closest one just because of the location of modern Italy. Remember who came when Rome fell and brought their own cultures and languages?
@Eurodance_Groove
@Eurodance_Groove 8 лет назад
You are right... In the last period most of the major legions and "local" armies were made by Germans, Hun mercenaries, and arabic "auxiliarii" knights... So... The languages spoken into the legions of the last 2 / 3 centuries of the Roman Empire were more similar to a mixture of Latin and Arabic in the Middle East and Latin / Celtic or Latin / Germanic in the northern borders or in the region of the modern Turkey and Crimea... Were the dieing Empire gave birth to the Eastern Empire, which eventually became the Empire of Constantinople and Byzantines... During the middle ages and over !!!

I have always wondered why the Lorica Segmentata style of armor wasn't more prolific during the middle ages from what i have seen in the process of making this and mail it seems the Lorica Segmentata would be a hell of a lot less time consuming to make and it seems to be a more effective armor because it gives you more protection against crushing blows than mail
