I weed them out by asking about local stuff or even make up something… “ Do you drink Cuban coffee from Lupe’s cafe, on Mylligan blvd? “. If they say yes you got a scammer. A few questions about local landmarks or local culture is all you need. Let them know you will send something better than money, your prayers.
I met a scammer long ago too, he was supposed to come back home and we chatted only for 2-3 months. As always an emergency came up while he was on airport and he asked me to send him 400 dollars so he can take medical treatment. I was like if you are on a airport, they do have paramedics there and you don’t have to pay anything there . And how come you are not contacting your family members if you are about to be in hospital for medical emergency, who would call a random person they just met few months ago online over their own family and friends. Even though I was very young and naive I knew that it doesn’t make sense at all that one “extremely wealthy” guy is calling me for 400 dollars so he can get admitted in a hospital. I Mean come on, I get so shocked when people actually believe this excuses and give these scammers money. I would rather let him die if he can’t arrange for 400 dollars on his own, he has no right to date anyone.

Agreed the scammer doesn't want you to see them so they hate video calls. Sometimes these calls can be recorded so during the call ask them to wave their right hand in the air.
Nope . Now they use AI to fake those too. Rule: don’t talk to strangers online. If you simply must do that, insist on meeting in person in two weeks and if they won’t meet block all contact.

I was a deputy in the patrol division at my Sheriff's department for 11 years, and found out my mother had gotten snagged by this. She would not believe me, even though she knows I have knowledge on this subject. My Sheriff and shift Sergeant and I are still friends and told me they are dealing with this increasingly. My mother is out about $24,000 that I know of, and I have been doing some deep research. I found out China is working with the officials in Nigeria and India in order to protect these scam rings, such as Black Axe, in order to economically weaken certain western countries.
I can't imagine how hard it would be to decide to take on a re-coveryagent role of an scammed persons. The history needs to be remembered though and the help that was born through such pain and suffering. Mad respect to these *ExposeGadgets on the internet* that take on these roless!❤

Not every old person is this stupid! My mother and grandmother would NEVER fall for this! She never gave away money to anyone. If she could do it then there is NO excuse for American Seniors to be doing this either. If you are stupid enough to send a TOTAL STRANGER all your Savings then you deserve everything you get!
@@tictac3147 Women tend to report being scammed; so their stories get told more often. Men don't report their being victims of romance scammers, but it does happen.

Dating apps are a cesspool of scammers. My husband of 39 years died in early 2014. In late 2016 I joined OK Cupid. 3 men tried to romance me. I had to pressure each one to speak on the phone and when they called they had accents ! The next step would have been them asking for money but I told each one to scram once I heard the accents. Was I lonely? Yes but I was not desperate or naive. Why in the world would would any SMART, educated woman send $ to a stranger? What gets me is that there are so many people out there who are so naive/stupid, that they actually think that someone that they have never met has any real affection for them. It shows a tremendous lack of life experience, a lack of knowledge about the real world.
It's easy if anyone asks you for money. Run away right away. What we were taught by our teachers & parents. Be careful of strangers? That should apply online too. They find out your interests & then they claim to have the same ones. Plus in th emilitary if they need money. They are taken care of by the government they just don't leave them there.

You are absolutely correct but people who are lonely or who like being admired or complimented don't think logically and even if their relatives and friends say beware you may be being scammed the scammee usually will ignore this advice - to their cost.
I'm getting these all the time. I cannot understand how people can be so stupid as to fall for them! You can see that this is not a real American military officer or doctor or engineer, or a Swiss banker, or whatever, just from their language. It is so bad. They use capitalization and apostrophes wrongly, and their language is so direct and simple. And who would come from nowhere and contact a strange person like that..? It doesn't happen. It would be more clever to build up a persona in for intance a Facebook group over a long time, where you talk about the subject of the group in great detail, be it archaeology or military aircrafts or vegan cooking, discuss with potential victims at the page several times, and also publish your own posts. Before you send a friend request. That is how I would do it! :) But these scammers do not take the time to do that... but still people fall for it?! :o
These stories are on every form of media and have been for years. The techniques are painfully obvious and repetitive. People are ignoring the obvious in desperation so these tips are fairly useless, they know the truth deep down but continue. A better fix is to address our societal loneliness and need for community and human contact.

This man lam talking to for 2 months is in Sweden on a rig..to make it short..hes not asking me for money he is having problems getting in to his bank account & wants to give me his user and pin to get in to his account to see if the company has deposited his 1/2 of contract money..he says he trusts me to do this for him because soon he will be home to marry me..whats the scam? I told him if l did it what would he want me to do next. He goes by David Smith.
You'll be questioned about money laundering and being a money mule when the FBI comes knocking on your door. I know you'd rather believe him, but save yourself the trouble and embarrassment.

Except it is not illegal for a person to gift or give their money away--their choice. I mean a person can get all their money out of their bank and throw it out on the street if they want. So I don't see the crime since nobody forced them to give their money away. A scam is like selling fake property or land and getting money for that. These romance scams are more along the lines of gifting. I can see where it is also a crime if the victim is elderly and has dementia.
I personally am SHOCKED ppl "fall in love" AND give their life's savings to a stranger------in 2023. Just tells us how much surplus is in America. HEALTH CARE FOR ALL. FREE COLLEGE FOR ALL. obv we can afford it!!
