One of the things I loved about this movie is in the end Joan beats the bad guy and saves herself. Very atypical for a 80s adventure comedy. I love it when Jack says “You’re going to be alright Joan Wilder. You always were.” As if to say she always had the strength of character to survive this ordeal.
Exactly... She started off scared and afraid of everything but by that point she was totally kick ass... She grew... not just another dumb blonde... and I loved that Jack fell for her... it was a great movie... Cute, funny, whimsical... an adventure, with a happy ending.
I look on "Romancing the Stone" films and it's sequel "The Jewel of the Nile" and "War of the Roses" as a "Romancing Trilogy" lol and all 3 main actors are in them etc.
This is a fantastic film, so glad to see you checking it out! Your sister would have enjoyed this one a lot I reckon. I really hope you'll watch its sequel The Jewel of the Nile. I love that film so much
Story Time: Its sad some people thought this was a Raiders of the Lost Ark rip off, when it was written before that movie came out by an out of luck struggling actress then waitress. This movie was her big break as she made a lot of money when the script was bought. She was finally in demand. Unfortunately, in an ironic twist of fate, her new wealth got her killed as she was a passenger in her new Porsche Michael Douglas gifted her when her drunk boyfriend was driving it and crashed and she died, hence why the sequel, though still good is missing a lot of the magic from this movie which clearly had a woman's touch and Joan was an extension of the real life "Joan Wider" Diane Thomas.
Close. She was busy writing the screenplay for the Steven Spielberg movie Always (fantastic movie btw) and couldn't do Jewel of the Nile. She was also doing a "treatment" (outline basically) for the 3rd Indiana Jones movie, but it wasn't used. She did die in the car accident a few weeks before Jewel of the Nile premiered. Thanks for letting me know her name, because I love both movies she wrote the screenplays for, and I never would have known she did both without you.
One of the most charming movies of all time. It was a massive hit in 84. Michael Douglas was white hot afterward. And Robert Zemeckis was able to make Back to the Future after due to its success. No chance Cassie doesn't adore it.
And yet I've seen several comments here calling it underrated. It was big hit, critics loved it, and it got a sequel. How could anyone think it was underrated. I'm beginning to think "underrated" has joined "literally" in the list of words people use without knowing their meaning.
@@richardb6260And yet it isn't talked about as much as similar action-romances! I agree that it's far from a cult classic, but still not as "classic" as it could be!😊
For the dance scene, they used some footage of Douglas and Turner when they hadn't realized they were rolling and were probably just practicing or simply relaxing, yielding the very genuine and spontaneous looks of delight on their faces.
So glad you enjoyed it--but I'm not surprised; this is a great rom-com! True story: Douglas met a waitress named Diane Thomas at a restaurant in Malibu. She'd written the script, and he read it, loved it, bought it and produced the movie, then the sequel, JEWEL OF THE NILE. Tragically, Diane Thomas died in a car accident after that, so she never had another movie made; that was her total Hollywood resume. But imagine being the waitress who talked Michael Douglas into reading her script! And btw, Douglas is the son of one of Hollywood's most legendary actors, Kirk Douglas. He resembles his father, and it took him years to climb out of his father's shadow, but being a producer as well, he ended up even more famous than his dad.
This should be the top comment! I actually saw Jewel of the Nile first when I was growing up, only saw this movie many years later. Jewel will always have a special place in my heat!!
R.I.P. Manuel Ojeda (Colonel Zolo) who passed away last year, 82 years old. One of Mexico's finest actors since the 1970s. A consummate professional with an unique look and voice, and great at playing both villains and heroes.
I’m so tickled that you got so into the beginning. Even going so far as to say “this is a romance novel!” With nothing but passion and excitement. Bravo. As always. Thanks for sharing with us.
As a 56 yr-old strong, secure, and confident male, this movie is one of my top favorites! I saw it in the theater when it came out in '84, and my most recent viewing was just about a month ago. The romantic elements get me every time :)
@@Hyakman5408 Take your time. It's not that hard. If you can't figure it out. I won't waste my time explaining stuff to someone who is too stupid to grasp such a simple sentence.
@raifthemad That's okay; I got it the first time around. I was just curious to see if you would respond with an insult, and you did! It's a very poor excuse for one, but it's an insult. When crafting your attacks in the future, try for a bit more creativity and wit. 😀
I was a high school movie usher at a one screen theater in Milwaukee when we ran "Romancing The Stone" We ran the film for two months because it was so popular and well-recieved. And even after seeing it hundreds of times, knowing all the dialogue and stunts, it still charms me. It's a fun romp and it's enjoyable everytime.
I didn't see it at the Villa (3610 W. Villard Avenue, Milwaukee, WI) but my father owned the jewelry store next door. We had a connecting door for storage. So I saw a lot of movies at the one screen theater.
@@joejawson5264 Wow, that's awesome! I worked at Southgate Theater on 27th and Morgan. It's long since been razed for that crummy Walmart but I have so many fond memories as a high school Movie Usher (1981-1984) I could write a book of my crazy experiences!
Thanks for reviewing this film. I'd forgotten how much I loved it. I remember how incredible it was being able to rent the video to rewatch it after seeing the theatrical release. What a time to be alive. Thank you for watching, and thank you for being a hopeful romantic, also.
FINALLY someone's reacting to this underrated classic. You'll love it. Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny Devito. This is movie you shouldn't watch by yourself. It's a very nice movie. Carly is going to be mad you watched without her
@@Diamond_Skies this was one of my greatest childhood moments and anytime I recommend it and it's sequel, people know idea what I'm talking. And its even enlightened me to see some one like who appreciates it.
This one does seem to be less remembered than other movies. It's one of those "if you've seen it then you love it. If you've not then you have zero idea of what you're missing
The actress playing the sister was Mary Ellen Trainor a familiar face in 80s movies including playing the mum in The Goonies, The police psychiatrists in the Lethal Weapon franchise and a newsreader in Die Hard and ricochet as well as appearing in Congo, Scrooged and Forrest Gump.
Kathleen Turner was very much an icon of 80s movies. If you want to see her with Michael Douglas again then you need to watch the movie War of the Roses.
It should be noted that War of the Roses has the same actors but they are NOT playing the same characters. It also should be noted that it's a dark comedy; a VERY dark comedy!
This movie is such a masterpiece. Action, Comedy, Romance... no matter what type of movie you enjoy, this is it. I was like only 9 or 10 when I first saw this, shortly after it came out... and I swear it's the movie that spawned my love for romantic comedies. Totally not surprised this is one of your father's favorites.
Romancing the Stone started my lifelong crush on Kathleen Turner. Her evolution from mousey writer to bold adventurer is wonderful to behold. And that voice 😍
LOVED how much you enjoyed this! It's a great live-action adventure romance novel that she gets to live within as the main character and had great rough edges like Jack's selfishness and the intense action at the end. You'll see traces of this movie in many other action-comedy-romances to come.
This movie is magic. I must've seen it a dozen times. Sequel is decent too. Kathleen Turner was huge in the 80s and early 90s but then developed rheumatoid arthritis, which drastically affected her career. She has made stuff since then, but it definitely impacted her career.
Unfortunately, she had a severe drinking problem for quite some time, and that, combined with the meds for her rheumatic arthritis, caused her to put on some weight. Hollywood, superficial Hollywood, wanted nothing to do with her after that.
The sequel is terrible. The writer of this terrific movie died in a car wreck, so the studio got a group of Hollywood hacks who did not understand why the first was such a hit.
Very special film for me, literally the first movie my parents rented on VHS when Dad bought our first VCR. They rented some kids video for me, and Romancing the Stone for themselves after, but I wasn't tired, and they decided to let me stay up past bedtime and watch this with them. As a 5 year old, of course I loved the crocodile biting off the hand, favorite part easily, lol. But yes, appreciate its charm as an adult!
Romancing the Stone is one of the greatest Rom/Com/Adventure movies of all time. It is literally the reason you have channels like this, to discover hidden gems that stand the test of time and put so many acting performances of today's movies to shame. Also incredible storytelling.
What I love about your reactions is that you get absolutely involved in the story. Also, your best line was, “Hold hands for protection”. Laughed out-loud at that one. Geoff from Fremantle Western Australia 🇦🇺
I grew up with these movies. Stone and Jewel Of The Nile were among mom's favorites, so i watched them a lot. So it's no surprise that I don't think about other people never having seen them. And you should definitely have your sister watch Jewel with you - right after you show her Stone.
"The War Of The Roses", also starring Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito. "Serial Mom" is another great, overlooked Kathleen Turner movie 😄 Also, if you like Danny DeVito, "Throw Momma From The Train" is another fantastic 80's classic!
The coach in The Mighty Ducks was Emilio Estevez, Martin Sheen is his father and Charlie Sheen is his half-brother. Martin Sheen was the President to Michael Douglas as Chief of Staff in The American President.
Kathleen Turner was very popular in the 80s and early 90s, but her career slowed in the 90s due to medical problems. My favorite of her movies is Serial Mom.
She was incredible in “Undercover Blues” with Dennis Quaid & Stanley Tucci. Don’t forget the awesome sequel to this “Jewel of the Nile”. Also her breakout role in Body Heat made her a star. You could have seen her if you watched Friends. She is Chandlers drag queen father with his own Las Vegas review show.
Great reaction! A great movie with Kathleen Turner that I know you will love . . . a movie that also stars Nicholas Cage . . . is Peggy Sue Got Married. It's an incredible love story. You and Carly will both love it. Guaranteed!
This movie was free on YT a month or 2 ago, & it hit me when I watched it (yet again) then that the scenes w/Joan, Jack, & Juan (the guy who gave a mini tour as they were escaping), all had names derived from/variants of the name John. Joan is the feminine version; Jack is/was a common nickname for John (think, JFK), & Juan is the Spanish version. How I never noticed that before is amazing. Even 40 yr old movies can surprise you. Also, note how her hairstyle reflects the changes in her, like gaining self-confidence. And for some reason, I always think of the Kai Cobra Sensei from Karate Kid when they're checking out that guy in the bar @ the beginning.
Loved Michael Douglas. This was a great success. Love underrated, The Game. Kathleen Turner can't be appreciated without watching Body Heat. Also a big movie, now a cult classic!
Love Kathleen Turner - one of my all time favorite movies is "Peggy Sue Got Married," - (1986) directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and co-starring Nicholas Cage, with cast members Jim Carrey, Helen Hunt, and Barbara Harris, among others. You and your sister would definitely enjoy it. Thanks for all the great reactions!
The sequel is pretty good too, Jewel of the Nile. Check it out. In addition the pair worked together on The War of the Roses, which was dramatically different and a bit intense.
I had a friend from high school that backpacked across Europe and made it to France before he went broke. Living on the streets earning money to continue, he came across a movie set and met Michael Douglas. He told him his story, Michael took him over to the food table for the movie employees and told him to eat as much as he wants. He also said that he did the same thing when he was his age.
Kirk Douglas once famously said, "I wish my kids had the same advantage I did growing up. I grew up poor...". I'm not calling your friend out, but Michael Douglas---Kirk Douglas' son---has never been "without", a single day of his life. Maybe Michael wanted him feel more at ease...
I’m honestly very glad to see someone reacting to this movie, especially blind. It’s such a fun movie, and while not as quotable as something like The Princess Bride, there’s a lot of great lines and scenes. My personal favorite is Juan realizing who Joan is, and the fact that he reads her books to his crew/neighbors. Plus the truck chase/village tour minutes later. SO much fun! 3:08 Of course, that laundry list of Groven’s was pretty fun too, in a campy way.
Fun Fact: Joan's publicist Holland Taylor is Sarah Paulson's longtime partner. Also, I love this movie. A movie with a similar vibe is The Lost City with Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. It doesn't have the charm that this one does but it's a similar story and pretty funny.
This movie kickstarted Michael Douglas into leading man A-list status. His run of movies after this was incredible....The Jewel of the Nile, Fatal Attraction, Wall Street, Black Rain, The War of the Roses, Basic Instinct, Falling Down, Disclosure, The American President and so on and so on. This started it all.
So true! Those movies really catapulted him into stardom. He was also In that successful cop drama with Carl Malden back in the 70s. "The Streets of San Francisco".
The next rom-com you must see is 1988's Working Girl with Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford, and Sigourney Weaver. You will love seeing Harrison Ford looking charming and handsome in modern-day suits. 🤗
You should show it to Carly so we can watch her reaction. This is one of my favorite childhood movies because my parents loved it.And it's a great mixture of Romance, Action,Adventure, and a happy ending!
I've been waiting for you to watch this with Cassie for Over a year now and just for the Record this Screenplay was written in 1979 a full year before Raiders of The Lost Ark was written
Kathleen Turner: “The Accidental Tourist “ is a great film. I think that it was the best film she ever starred in. And it’s an eighties flick like you enjoy ✋🏻
Michael Douglas had been making serious message-type movies and decided to make something more mainstream and popular. This was the result. There is a sequel which is pretty good as well. Kathleen Turner did a movie called Body Heat with William Hurt. This movie got her career jump started, big time. It was written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan, his first big break as a director. It's a pretty steamy movie, but it's really excellent.
I'm absolutely SHOCKED you've never seen this movie before this! One of the biggest rom-com movies ever! And I know you are hard core addicted to rom-coms. But I'm glad you could share this first time watching. Full body goose bumps.....you're so cute!!!
I remember when it first showed up on premium cable, you could find it playing on one channel or another pretty much 'round the clock all day, every day.
You should check out Kathleen Turner in Body Heat alongside William Hurt. It's the movie that opened the door for her to get the role in Romancing The Stone. It's a Film Noir directed and written by Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote the screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Also see Random Harvest with Carly.
I know immediately that you are going to love it. Then you said your dad loves it, and that kinda seals the deal. Your sister would find this a treat too, if she hasn't seen it.
I was deep in my romance novel phase when this movie came out. I already had the book and got the movie poster. I liked it so much and the supporting cast is dynamite! Interesting about Michael Douglas. His work trends dramatic/suspense, but he’s a gifted comedic actor as well! Sidenote: he and Danny DeVito have been friends since college. Danny was in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a film produced by Michael Douglas. Michael is also worth checking out in China Syndrome, War of the Roses (black comedy), Wall Street, and many more.
I was so looking forward to this movie reaction from you or from you with Carly! I think this movie was a lot of fun and hit a lot of your benchmarks for being good! The guy who read all of Jane's books and drove them around town was the same guy who came out in another movie called the Three Amigos. That is another movie you should watch! This was fun! Thanks!
Watched the ghost and the darkness again recently and it would make for a good reaction. Although it's not as polished a movie as could have been with such an incredible story as source material, I think Cassie would really like the Val kilmer-michael Douglas collaboration in this.
Have so much love and nostalgia for this movie. I watched it with my parents when I was a kid. I loved any action love story like this then and still do 😂
I love this movie. I've seen it many times, but it took me a while to realize that 9:41 is exactly the image of Jesse in the hat from the poster in her apartment. 10:04 - exactly! :D
This is such a fun movie and they have great chemistry. If you like Kathleen Turner you will love Body Heat. It’s a modern ( 80’s) film noir with William Hurt. She was also the voice of Jessica Rabbit in Who framed Roger Rabbit.
Yay! Finally! 😁I always knew one day you would react to this! You have to watch the sequel as well, Jewel of the Nile. Just as charming as this one but in its own way.
Love your reaction. Joan Wilder's editor was played by Holland Taylor, a great actress, who was in The Practice, Two and a Half Men, George of the Jungle, The Truman Show, and so many more which is probably why you recognized her. Someone noted previously another similar type movie, American Dreamer, with JoBeth Williams and Tom Conti which is also hilarious.
"The Ghost And The Darkness" (1996) is another Michael Douglas in the jungle movie, but this one is a true adventure drama from the 1890"s, starring Val Kilmer as a bridge builder and Douglas as a big name hunter confronted with some serious wildlife adversaries. Additionally, Douglas has a nice list of watchable movies behind him, including Douglas as the bad guy. For some amusement, try Douglas and Turner in the 1989 "War of the Roses".
17:20 The mythical Hydra grew back a head, or two, no real creature does. Some lizards can drop their tail and grow it back, very useful if you are grabbed by the tail.
This movie is an absolute gem, pun not necessarily intended. My whole family loves Romancing The Stone. We watched it when I was a child and the VHS was first available to rent, then recorded it off of TV, then got the DVD... Watching it never gets old, and it is always timeless. I'm always up for watching a reaction to it. Watch it again with your sister, if you want to, and I'll be there with another thumbs up. What a feelgood movie.
Yes, it's a gem, and definitely not a croc. In the end the woman got the dreamboat. The evil guy played by Danny DeVito was caught short. The main villain wasn't handy enough to prevail.
Kathleen and Michael's chemistry was really good. They were actually contracted for 5 movies together but they had a falling out and only did 3 I think. You should watch War of the Roses with them. I really like Kathleen in Undercover Blues and Serial Mom. I enjoyed watching your reaction to this as its one of my favorites.
God Bless to you always Cassie! Love all your movie reactions! There’s literally so many movies I want to see you watch but the list is too long for me to put here! Lol 😂 Never seen this movie so I will have to add this to my movie library for sure! ❤️❤️ Take care and keep up the amazing work! Mom and I love your channel from So. Cal USA 🇺🇸 Love to all reading this comment from wherever you are tuning in from! ❤️
Michael Douglas only planned to produce this movie. He had been acting, but mostly bit roles and the second lead in The Streetsof San Francisco. He was leaning more towards producing. They talked to a number of big name actors for the role of Jack, but they couldn't find someone who was interested and available. Finally he decided to do the role himself.
The sequel, The Jewel of the Nile, is equally worth watching. More importantly, if you haven't seen Kathleen Turner in anything before, you MUST watch Body Heat, a genuinely great neo-noir movie.
Kathleen Turner is probably best known for her femme fatale role in the film Body Heat, which was written and directed by the screenwriter of Raiders of the Lost Ark. She's also in my favorite Steve Martin comedy The Man With Two Brains. She and Michael Douglas (and Danny Devito) made another movie called The War of the Roses. It's a comedy. But NOT a romantic one. It's kinda the anti-romantic comedy. She did an underrated movie with Dennis Quaid called Undercover Blues. I don't see it getting a lot of love. But I like it. Turner's distinctive voice lead to a lot of voice work. Most notable the voice of Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, in which she had the classic line "I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way". There's a sequel to Romancing the Stone called Jewel of the Nile. It's OK. But not as good as the first.
That sailboat was for sale in Annapolis Maryland about 10 years ago. As mentioned by others, Jewel Of The Nile is the sequel. Its pretty good too...for a sequel.
This is the movie that saved Robert Zemekis career. He had had a couple of flops in a row and this was his last chance. Based on the success of this he got "Back to the Future", then "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", the "Back to the Future" sequels. After that he could pretty much do whatever he wanted. He was up there with Steven Spielberg. Also, Kathleen Turner had fantastic chemistry with all her romantic leads, while still being funny. Besides the sequel, she and Michael Douglas also co-starred in "The War of the Roses".
I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Used Cars may have flopped at the box office. But they're both good movies. Used Cars is one of my favorite comedies of all time.
I agree with Richard. Zemeckis earlier work were not bad movies. I want to hold your hand was a good movie and Used Cars is hilarious. Even if they weren't box office successes, Zemeckis talent was obvious to the studios. Romancing the Stone was a Box Office smash. And it was the movie that led to Back to the Future being greenlighted.
Now that you have seen this one you should watch the sequel “Jewel of the Nile.” For a completely different style with Michael, Danny and Kathleen watch the movie “War of the Roses”. Both would be good with your sister along for the ride.
One of my favorites! I was so happy to see this come us on your channel 😊 This type of movie is such fun! The sequel is worth a watch, but for me this one is my favorite of the 2. Another movie with a similar vibe is American Dreamer (1984). It has similar themes of shy/housewife writer, adventure, and romance. And if you wanna see more of "Juan", he's in The Three Amigos. It is a hilarious movie with Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short. As for Joan, she voiced Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. And can also be seen in Peggy Sue Got Married (with a young Nick Cage & Jim Carrey!). Oh and Undercover Blues for some hilarious spy action with Dennis Quaid! ~Caroline edited to add more RomComs! I love them too ♥ Ever After (my favorite Cinderella story!), Sleepless in Seattle, One Fine Day, French Kiss, An Affair to Remember (1957), Clueless, Something's Gotta Give, Moonstruck (more young Nick Cage!), The Wedding Singer, and another action adventure from com: Six Days Seven Nights (with Harrison Ford!).
I think American Dreamer is my all-time favorite movie by far! I need to warn you, though . . . you'll want to watch American Dreamer over and over and over again! I know I do. It is the perfect movie! (I just LOVE Rebecca Ryan! You have to watch the movie to understand. 😂😅😊😅😂)
I love that you reacted to this because not many people have and it’s one of my favorite movies, and I personally don’t think that Jack was ever going to steal the map, I think he was just making a copy for extra insurance in case they lost the original and they needed something to bargain with.
It's a sequel to Romancing the Stone. Sure Cassie will watch that one too but it isn't as good as the first film. There is also The War of the Roses that has the same cast but isn't the same characters.
the dancing scene was not originally in the script, the first part of the dance where they are dancing side by side was actually the two actors dancing at an end of day meal for the cast and crew, one of the cameramen filmed it and the rest of the scene was made up the next day!
In the first scene, there is a tradition at celebrations of breaking the wine glass you took your first drink from. She didn't want to break the wine glass, so she broke the plate instead. Kind of sets the tone for the whole movie ;) And I think your dad put this movie on his list because he knew how much you would love it :)
This is one of my all time favorite movies!! I grew up watching this as a kid, so I don't know what you kids my age were watching back in the day to not know of these gems...??? Weird to me I guess lol but glad you found it.
Carly missed out so bad! You two are the perfect audience for this movie. It came out when I was in high school and remains one of my underrated favorites to this day!
I never noticed it before, until you started humming the Indy theme, but now it's all I can see. Yeah, clearly the character is a pastiche of Indy and Han Solo. Notice as soon as she mentioned paying him she had his full attention. Also notice you don't see his face for a few minutes, even when he's shooting the place up. That's exactly how Indy was introduced in the first movie. For another really good Kathleen Turner movie from the 80's you need to see Body Heat, with William Hurt. An excellent neo-noir.
You ARE right, this would have been a perfect movie to watch with your sis! P.S. you dad has a good taste in movies, and this is a perfect example of romance movie done in a way both men and women can enjoy.
