If you are a Romani yourself then please let me know what you think of the Romani representation in Peaky Blinders. Music- Y2906LMTOT0PSJEZ #romani #peakyblinders #netflix
Hi Abhinav! You should visit the city of Šuto Orizari, in North Macedonia! It's a city and the only Roma-run municipality in Macedonia, with almost a 100% Roma population, and is often referred to as the "Roma capital". It would be really interesting to see a video about the people there, and I'm quite sure that you might even be able to speak in Hindi with some folks there, and they might undersand a few things.
Woah! That’s awesome. Thank you so much for this info. I have some questions. Could you please connect with me on insta @helping_the_roma. Thanks so much :)
Peaky Blinders got it very wrong and at times very right. I'm of mixed romanichal heritage and I come from a town with a large GRT comunity. In the UK Romanichals, Irish/Scottish Travellers have influenced each other a lot over the centuries and there's been a lot of mixed marriages, this relates to my family as well as many others. During the 19th century many traveller families, Romani and non-romany alike as well as a great deal of other immigrants, britsh rural poor and folk from abroad pilled into the emerging urban zones and an underbelly of organised crime linked to poverty undoutedly ensued. I have a side of my family who were very much involved in this, and for that at times Peaky Blinders was like watching my own family history play out on screen, but it was as much to do about being working class in industrial northern england as it was to do with coming from a romany/traveller background. The aesthetics of the caravans etc. was good, Uncle Charlie's scrap yard, my family had one of those, plus the use of the canal boats. But they would blur the lines too much between irish travellers and Romany cuture. I know the difference, but the average person at home hasn't got a clue The casting in general was really bad - it whitewashes Romanichals. British-romanies on the whole are not as dark complected as eastern Roma, particualry if they are mixed and they Shelby family are mixed - that said, they shouldn't look like Mr Average brit either. Once upon a time on british TV and film when they had to cast a Romany character they would choose someone who's appearance was atleast more mediterranean/balkan. The latter may exotify to a degree but it's better than people thinking the only thing that identifies you as a "gypsy" is if you live in a caravan. When you read 19th century english literature depicting Romanichals, the writers really go to town describing their charcters' 'swarthyness' - it was also a bit weird an entrenched in white supremacy. That said with modern representations' heavy focus on non-romany traveller groups, the opposite has come to pass and now whitewashing has become the new cringe.

I wish one day you show the Roman people in Poland ! I know we do have Roma festival ! Yes it is true Roma people did experience so much discrimination ,racism and mistreat ! Unfortunately lots fault is the government not providing help with accomodation ,interrogation etc ! I do think lots conflict was on cultures misunderstandings ? Most Poles think that Gypsy people should be like us and follow our culture but we forget that they have own culture I don’t think now the Gypsy situation is bad in Poland but I don’t know many people of Gypsy background so hard to say !
Irish travelers were Irish families displaced by the English colonizers whom seized their land and displaced them, leaving them homeless. Romani (gypsies/gitano) people are from displaced military soldiers from ancient Rajasthani Northern India. The word gypsy derived from an ancient Greek word for Egyptian because the ancient Greeks thought the brown Romani people were from Egypt but actually were Rajasthani of Northern India. Texas USA has a large brown ethnic Romani population that many mistaken as Mexican or Hispanic. They don't date, marry or really socialize much outside of business/work. And it's only the men whom socialize with outsiders, for work or business. The women don't socialize outside of the Romani community.
I am Romani from England and I like the show, it’s just entertainment, no need to be taken seriously. When I heard them speak Romani I was also confused 😂 they definitely spoke some Romani words but most of it was unrecognisable to me. Still it’s just entertainment
Well I suggest you to watch two movies directed by Serbian director Emir Kusturica, "Time of Gypsies" and "Black Cat, White Cat". The real Roma people played Roma characters in both movies. Also famous song in Roma language "Ederlezi" is from the soundtrack of the first mentioned movie.
@@Immortal_Inkwellthe show is a good representation closest thing i have ever seen. 90% turn to crime it is the truth, the languagein the show is made up the rest is not
@@Jackthetraveller The show isn't even accurate to the real Peaky Blinders, never mind Rom culture 😂 90% of Roma are not criminals at all, what a ridiculous thing to claim. The show is about as accurate as Peppa Pig is accurate to pigs
@@Immortal_Inkwell Hahahha nah i was just mad 😂 like fuc u all. Truth is it is a secret most don’t want anyone to know i talked to alot and outsiders is outsiders for a reason and from what i can see we are smart to not trust people just look at the World and this bs
A very important question. I think there are a few reason and some context that explains why this is an important conversation to have. The show itself wears the real world history that inspired it, on its sleeve. The Peaky Blinders were a real gang and the show goes to great lengths to recreate the time period, clothes and historical context correctly. It is outwordly advertising itself as both inspired by real events and historically accurate in its presentation. So, with this in mind, people will assume that the representation of Romani culture in the show must have the same amount of historical reality as well as accuracy in its portrayal as the other elements in the show. So, it's important to draw a distinction between what in the show is real and what is just pageantry. This is especially important when you're representing somebody else's culture, because not only are you portraying a group you are not a part of to a wife audience, but the things that are shown in the show will affect how people consider Roma people and will unfortunately be some people's first experience with our culture at all. So being vocal about the issues with the represention and pointing out what's wrong with it is a very powerful way of educating people on the truth of it. There is not a lot of representation for Romani people in media, there are not many Roma characters and they're usually not played by Roma actors in the rare cases the roles exist. When most of these roles are evil fortune tellers or scam artists, then something more significant comes up, we should be deconstructing it and discussing how it could be done more accurately and more respectfully in the way that other cultures are represented in media. All of this plays a part in how were perceived and treated in society and we have a responsibility to make sure that we shape our representation instead of having others do it for us and get it so horribly wrong. So while it may not be a documentary, the part it plays in public perception and understanding of our culture shouldn't be understated.
They are not portraying roma . They are british gypsies , that means romanichal and in the show they are supposed to be crossed with Irish travellers. You don't seem to understand us at all . Yore family is from Spain, we are not the same.
@@coryparni3620 Actually the main family in the show is supposed to be mixed Irish-Romani. But there is another family who is said to specifically be Roma, it's this family that spoke the bad Romanian and who the show leans on for it's more exotic features like showing Kali Sara and so on. Even if you're arguing that they are supposed to be Romanichal, they're still awful representation of Romanichal. We need to hold gadže to higher standards and demand more Roma led projects.
@@Immortal_Inkwell I don't agree with you . I'm happy with our portraial in the show , proud of it even . Seems to me that you like being offended . There's a theam on abivs Chanel , it's people moaning about how hard dun by they are . Sign of the times .
Phoenix, dude, why haven't you picked up your little sister yet? and why can't you be seen among the gypsy boys? why can't you be seen in the gypsy community?
