This week we're stepping WAY back through history, using the De Bellis Antiquitatis system to try out some ancient warfare. Specifically we're putting some Republic-Era Romans up against the Parthian Empire of the modern-day Iran.
De Bellis Antiquitatis is a light, fast playing system that allows ancients or medieval combat between armies across a vast swath of history. Players can often easily get two or three games into a productive afternoon.
We hope you like this episode, where the Sitrep Podcast is trying to broaden our range a little and cover a wider stretch of military historical wargaming.
Further discussion and participation on these wargaming topics can be had in the Sitrep Podcast Discord: / discord

I hope so as well. Jim Dundorf, who runs these games at the club, is a big proponent and champion of the system.

Thats DBA, very very fast. Actually I think this game was even faster than most because of all the cavalry ... there was very little of the usual "push back and forth" and more units annihilated in place. But even with infantry, I've seen practiced players get through a game in 30 minutes.

Great game, I really enjoy the DBA stuff. It's cool to see something different to "Romans v Romans" or "Barbarian Horde v Romans". Marcus Licinius Crassus had a pretty good go and his plan was a good one but he made a critical mistake. His idea was; enemy have arrows, we have shields, their arrows don't really hurt us when we're behind our shields so just wait it out. Unfortunately the Parthians thought of that as well and had a huge number of camels carrying spare arrows. Then his son who he sent out gets trapped and Crassus tries to save him but he already "checked himself out" before his father could arrive. Then he gets killed at a peace talk. I google his name to make sure I was spelling it right and found this on the wiki "Crassus amassed an enormous fortune through real estate speculation". That "real estate speculation" was that Crassus had a miraculous habit of showing up at your house right after it burst into flames then offering you 10-20% of it's value as it burned to the ground. Then the fire brigade, which he founded and owned would either save the house or rebuild it with a small army of architect and construction trained slaves before renting the house back to you.

Thanks very much, @AnotherHistorianWargamer. Yeah, the thing about DBA is you can toss just about any ancient or medieval armies against each other assuming you have the lists and the minis. Sometimes it leads to some curious history (here we have armies from the 2-3 century BC in a 1st century BC battle) but of course its all about the tactics and fun. Crassus was definitely a character. Bit of inferiority complex, all the money in the world couldn't buy him a noble name. So during the Servile Wars while Roman legions are hung up in wars in Hispania and other theaters, and local consular legions are destroyed by Spartacus et al, he tries to amp up his status but buying Rome a whole new ARMY out of his pocket, on the condition that he commands. So it's like Texas revolts against the United States, but the US Army is overcommitted in Iraq and Afghanistan. The National Guard can't handle it, so Jeff Bezos just BUYS the US Army ten new armored brigade combat teams and leads them into combat on the condition that if he wins, either the Democrats or Republicans install him as their presidential nominee in 2024. Crazy stuff.

DBA is always a good laugh keep it pre medieval lists for the best game of it.

I don't know much about DBA (I just made the video, Jim Dundorf is the referee at our club). But I agree that ancients interests me more personally than medieval.
