You never heard of this master class world champion because he gave the middle finger to F.C. Barcelona and to F.I.F.A. in general.

True. His character made him unfavourable with the marketing houses. He was never gonna let managers or sponsors tell him what to do. This is a player (along with Ronaldinho) who had the raw natural talent to become the best player of all times, but he didn't want to due to discipline.

@The12345nikolas
@The12345nikolas 6 лет назад
01tonyde in the 90's, any great Brazilian team was superior to those of Europe, the great players played here in Brazil, you think it was easy to win a Brazilian championship in the 90's? In Spain there are only 2 major traditional clubs, in Italy 4 at most, in England 5 at the most, in Brazil ALL the clubs of the first division managed to win the championship in the 90s. Romário reached the 1000 goals playing here in Brazil, playing against giant clubs like Sao Paulo, Internacional, Flamengo, Santos, etc, much more difficult than playing against La Coruña, Zaragoza, Feyenoord, Heerenveen (with respect to these clubs, but none of them they may be superior in history than a median club in Brazil). Beach and partying also in Spain, what he did here he also did in Spain. He came back to play here was not because of parties, but because of the passion for our league, country and your family.
@Thrakun
@Thrakun 6 лет назад
The spanish league in those days, for a big club, was much harder to win than nowadays, many clubs had real options to win it. Including that Deportivo de la Coruña that you so happily dismiss, they won the league one of those years. Most of the clubs compiting were founded around 100 years ago and there were like 6 or 7 real contenders each year, unlike nowadays. So yeah, no disrespect to the brazilian league, but it was far away from that era of the spanish league. Saying that in Spain there are only 2 traditional clubs shows how little you now, maybe you've only been watching football for the last 10 years or so, when it was all Barça vs Madrid. But when the legend Romario played here the league was really difficult to win because of the high amount of contenders each year. One year Valencia won and Coruña came 2nd, so if you only think about Barça-Madrid... well, it's up to you. Even in the late 80s and early 90s when it was mostly Madrid and Barça winning, it was only because of the great teams that they had during a few years, but other clubs like Athletic, Real Sociedad, Español, Atlético, Betis and Valencia were always contesting. Just as an example, Romario played for Valencia in 96-97 and then he went back to Brazil. Well, Valencia won two leagues in 2002 and 2004, including reaching a couple of times the Champions league final.
@The12345nikolas
@The12345nikolas 6 лет назад
That was not the focus of my criticism, I was referring to the way in which he approached the reason for Romario's return to Brazil, this meant that he only came back here to make a spree, he already did in Spain, my comparisons were made to show the greatness of Brazilian football, here a club takes the professionalism of an athlete as much as in Europe in that sense, the difference is that European football clubs have more purchasing power and can keep the competition within their own cast, already in Brazil this becomes more difficult in this sense. But since we are comparing the competitiveness of the championships ... it's only up to you to win the title difference of the top 3 winners of each tournament. in La Liga: R. Madrid -> 33 Barcelona -> 25 A. Madrid -> 10 In the Brasileirão: Palmeiras -> 9 Santos -> 8 Corinthians -> 7 The difference is simply discrepant. Let's make the following analogy, La Coruna 2000, had three important brasilians in the cast: Djalminha, Mauro Silva and Flavio Conceição, and other foreigners like Makaay, Pauleta, Duscher, Naybet, etc ... Imagine if it was forbidden any player to play outside of their country, the Spanish championship would be less competitive, as the Brazilian / Argentine and others who sell their players for the great leagues, our tournaments would be much superior to the Spanish championship. Villareal, A. Madrid and Valencia have made historic campaigns in the finals and semi-finals, but here even the second division clubs have managed to get far in the continental tournaments such as São Caetano and Paysandú, to understand the size of competitiveness between the clubs here.

Romario = Girls and Goals! Known as the Deadly Assassin, and also, like Pele... has a 1000 goals to his name. Played in the Dutch league then in the Spanish Liga (like Brazillian Ronaldo with whom he also played with but more so in the twilight of his footballing career) for Barcelona and coached by another legend Johan Cruyff and was responsible with Bebeto with the rock a bye baby celebration for goals in bringing back the World Cup back in 1994 back to Brazil after 20 years in the wilderness without it. Quick, fast and furious, had a bag full of tricks, Lethal, a Beast in the box, an amazing touch and spacial awareness, Clinical and technically gifted. A gifted goal machine. Smiles...

It was really fun to watch your reactions to the genius of the penalty box. Romario is considered to be just as good as ronaldo here in brazil. It's a perfectly split contest: 50, 50. He played for olaria, vasco, psv, barcelona, then came back to brazil when he was the best player in the world, at age 29 to play for flamengo. He could've easily won the award at least one more time, probably 2 more times, since he placed 4th and 10th in 95 and 96, despite playing for flamengo. He played shortly for valencia, then vasco again, then fluminense, then vasco, then MIAMI FC, then vasco again. I was 7 years old when he promised to and won the world cup in 94 for brazil after 24 years (since 1970). Also he was the best player of the tournament. That right then was beginning of my love for the beautiful game. Check out other facts too: he scored 1002 goals in his career; he was the top goal scorer in the brazilian national champioship at age 40; he has the highest goal/match average of all time for brazil's national team; he was left out of the 2002 brazilian WC squad due to lack of discipline, despite having scored 74 goals the previous season at age 36; in 2007, when he retired from professional soccer, he had scored 14 goals in 17 matches at age 42, halfway through the season. Many people, mainly abroad, like yourself, haven't heard of him because he chose to play at home when he was the best player in the world, which is a pity. For me, as for all of brazil, he is among the 10 best ever.

There are many reasons you,ve never heard about him. But here in Brazil, for anyone with 30 years or more, Romario is the best man in front of the goal ever. He almost never loses a goal when in front of the goalpost. Check the "elástico" he gave in Amaral durgin a Flamengo X Corinthians. One of the most beautiful things you will see in this sport.

Romário was a star that played since late 80's but shined at the 90's. He alone won the 94's World Cup (In the USA, btw) almost by himself to Brazil. This guy was so huge that he became the Brazilian national championship top scorer at the age 39 always saying that 'the level was too low so that's why he could do all the things he does'. He is one of the few in the world that scored more than 1k goals in his life. He is a legend and oh, he was only 5’5” and scored A LOT of goals with his unhuman push that reached 6’7”. And to finish, a fun fact about him. Once he was playing for Barcelona and he wanted to come to Brazil to spend the Carnaval in here, but he had to play. He then asked his coach that if he scored 2 goals, he could go out at the midtime. His coach then lol'd and said that if he scored 3, he could do anything he wanted. Well, he did scored 3 goals at the first half and then asked if he could leave. His coach allowed and Romario went straight to the airport, because he had ALREADY bought the plane tickets before the match. What a legend. He is basically what Messi always dreamed to be.

Also after a couple of years in the Netherlands then two years in Spain when he went big he went back to play in Brazil for the last 15 years of career So he had less European exposure And then he wasn’t taken to WC1998,2002,2006 (A real shame since he’s one of the best players of all time) So he’s less known.. now.. but that’s what you tube is for In Brazil he is very well known And yes.. you just don’t see his style of genius goals in any other player Also he has 1000 career goals
@The12345nikolas

In the 1990s, the Brazilian media and the technical committee of the Brazilian team only paid attention to the players who practically played in our country. There were thousands of players who stopped participating in the World Cup because they did not play in Brazil: Savio - Real Madrid, Djalminha - La Coruña, Elber - Bayern, Juninho Paulista - Middlesbrough, Careca - Napoli, Aldair - Roma, etc... Due to the fact that the Brazilian prefer to watch Brazilian football (at that time), it was very rare to see a Brazilian wanting to watch a European championship. Romário did not go to the World Cup 98 because he was injured, in 2002 he had a disagreement with the national team, in 2006 he was very old, Rivaldo had not gone in 2006 was even more unfair.

He was 1994 World Cup champion... in the final, Romario and Roberto Baggio (Italy) were the two "popstars". He had some attitude problems, so some brazilian coaches did not take him to World Cups despite the fans asking for him. (that includes 2002, when Brazil was champion) Not many countries besides Brazil could leave Romario at home and still win a World Cup with Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Rivaldo... the 3 Rs... it would be 4 Rs with Romario.

Romario was elected by FIFA the best player in the world in 1994 (and second in 1993), playing for Barcelona FC. He won a World Cup for the Brazilian national team, being named the best player of the World Cup in the USA. He is considered the greatest idol of PSV Eidhoven, great idol of Barcelona, and in Brazil, he has a statue of his size in São Januário, stadium of the Vasco da Gama team. Although internationally, Ronaldo Nazário is more famous, in Brazil, there is a greater preference of the fans for Romario. He also scored the historic mark of 1000 goals, just like Pele.

One of the greatest goalscorers in football history. You need a mountain of ignorance to enjoy football and not know who Romario is. He scored more than 1000 goals. He was champion on World Cup 1994. He got injured before World Cup in 1998, the Brazil's attack would be Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Leonardo. Bebeto was called to substitute him. He was not called to World Cup 2002 because he was problematic outside from the field. The Brazil's coach decided to not call him. However, without doubt he was one of the best players I've ever had. I also think he was better than Ronaldo. He played until 42 years old. He was the unique player who was won the FIFA the best playing outside from Europe.

David That is a big argument in Brazil. The Fenômeno was more pyrotechnic, his athleticism, and explosiveness and quick dribbling are jaw dropping. Romario was such a genius that he made hard things seem simple, less fancy but more lethal. His positioning as forward was unmatched, he headed incredibly well despite his height and was, like Ronaldo, great in assisting players. To quote Cruyff, “inside the big box, no genius surpasses Romario.’

Well, you asked a question a lot and made one comment. The question: why haven't you heard of him? His career spanned from the late 80s to the early 2000s. During this era, there were still good conditions to play in Brazil for a player of his caliber. He also chose it and made a point to play in Brazil after a long tenure in the Dutch league’s e and a shorter period in Spain. Like some people mentioned, he was not the friendliest to FIFA and the politics of the game, so the best player of the 1994 WC, arguably one of the best strikers in history, and in Johann Cruyff's own words "the best ever inside the box" is a bit unknown for younger non-brazilians. The comment: how calm he was. Yes, he was very relaxed and calm in situations most players, or anyone would lose their temper. It is said that a group of physiologists got to place heart monitors in the Flamengo squad to test, among other things, the player's anxiety level during a match. Romario's was completely out of the norm. He was, indeed, extremely calm and relaxed in these tense situations.

Romário made more than a thousand goals, after winning the world cup in 1994 he returned to Brazil at the height of the career because he did not like to train, he drank a lot and lived on the beach and at parties so he is not very well known internationally but here in Brazil is considered as better than ronaldinho and ronaldo

You don't know about him because you spent 0 effort into looking at the game's history previous to 2000. Romario was the best Brazilian striker for an entire decade until Ronaldo appeared. Shockingly, it seams that you don't even know the history of the 1994 US World Cup. If you did, you would know Romario well as this was his most glorious of tournaments.

You never heard of this master class world champion because he gave the middle finger in the air to F.C. Barcelona and to F.I.F.A. in general. Also to the CBF and mant coaches in Brazil like Zagalo, Scolari, and he was regected and disappear of the history and so many people only remember Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, but he was capable to win the world cup in 1998 but there was a conspiracy against him to prevent him to do it. Peace
