I will never forget seeing Margot Fonteyn dancing live in Christchurch N Z in the nineteen sixties.I was 16yrs old.She was so epherial and beautiful.I have only seen her with Neuriev on film. I will remember them both for ever. The love and energy between them is very beautiful,.I am now 80 and have taught piano for many years..AucklandNZ..🎉
@maryjackson8819 j'm more old j saw Fonteyn she was a calamity ; j have not forgoten Nina Vyroubova so Rosella Hightower with Cuevas ballets at Alger , it'swas in 1958 , jj have good memory
Breathtaking partnership of Fonteyn and Nureyev! Anyone who has ever experienced first love will agree how beautiful and true their dance described it! Fabulous production and music, of course!
That they loved each other outside the theatre played no small part in the beautiful performances they blended together in. Their initial meeting for work had two hugely gifted people eagerly learning from the other. Joy of joy that we can see these videos especially if we never them live on stage.
This goes beyond dance. There is a sensuality between the leads. It as if they are living their roles and not just dancing them. They obviously really respected one another artistically and came alive together when dancing.
BRAVI!!!!
Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev had the chemistry and artistry, which energies were entwined with grace, balance, lines, and dancing with ethereal bliss. The colors of emotions show deeply with each step and physicality of expressions. Destiny brought them together, and how thankful we are. Thank you for this exquisite production of "Romeo and Juliet" and the cast of marvelous ballet artists that I have not seen in completion. Bravo 👏 ❤
Cheri : you have not seen Romeo-Juliette with Monique Loudieres-Patrick Dupond you !! ( Palais des Congrès-Paris 1985 ) it's sure when j read what you write
What a performance! Dame Margot is 47 here, but I never once didn't buy her as the 14 year old Juliet. This is something only someone really familiar with ballet would comment on, but she has an unusually good "working turnout. And what a partnership. She is so refined, and his wildness really works with her polish. Thanks so much for posting this!
Oh, i respectfully differ!! Was just marveling how she clearly demonstrates that she remembers what it is to be 14 ! - and oceans deep in love.... for the very first time!❤
When I was 16 and 1966 I saw Nuriyev and Margaret Fontaine dance. What do you call flying and floating in the air and wings? It was their dancing and acting especially that was magical. Since then I’ve seen everyone Alvin Ailey, Baryshnikov, Gelsey, Kirkland. No one compares to Nuriyev and Margaret Fontaine. When I danced after that, I always do know that guy that guy was dancing on another planet from them.
I also saw them, this production, when I was 13. I have it in VHS & DVD. McMillian’s choreography is the BEST! I too have seen Baryshnikov & Kirkland. But this is the best ever. The highest standard.
I meant to say, then after that, I have other dancers are dancing on the planet first then the two of them. Margot Fonteyn and Nuriyev created a magic planet of their own.
Fabulous choreography,. And the "acting" was superb by the entire cast......Provokiev's musical score 🎶🎶🎶. A Masterpiece....... Nureyev excelled tenfold iin just 4 short years since he started with the Royal Ballet in 1962
Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev are the great ballet dancers, both separately and as a pair. I've been waiting to see this Romeo and Juliet in its entirety for years. Thank you so much for posting it. This is the only version for me. The perfection, the acting . . .!
There will hardly be a couple like Fonteyn and Nureyev! What a way of dancing and acting! It is a beauty to watch them; a delicious sight!; a joy!!! MBA Josefina Vega Argùelles
Don't care what anyone says about the age difference, the injustice to Lynn Seymour, or the superiority of Ulanova as Juliet, that was one hell of a bit of theatre! - An exquisitely touching rendition of an eternally dramatic story. I think even WS himself would have been pleased!
All women truly do not age similarly. Some at 50 still appear 25. It is a gift, and Margot truly made use of all of her gifts: those she was born with, and those that she developed with much painstaking care❤
How in the world did he spin so fast like that? Lol.... and Margot....simply "exquisite" This production should of won an AWARD ,,, similar to an Oscar
How did he spin so fast is a good question! Is he changing his ‘spot’ as he is moving directions so quickly? He definitely wants to make it hard for anyone else to duplicate. Dancing on his toes made him go faster and also was dangerous to risk.
@@maryrosenblatt6741 yes. Interesting perspective.....also. I got a good look at his BARE feet in a photo i.came across. He had the most unusually shaped feet. And longest toes I've ever seen.....probably an advantage....He also had an extraordinary powerfully thick neck. And wide broad strong shoulders of. A man.of his size. (Only 5'8"). Not that tall...... gave him enormous upper body power......but as far as his head and vision to "spot" on every spin.....that's just amazing. How it didn't mess with his equilibrium..or cause him nausea.....
Thank you so much for posting this beautiful performance! It brings back so many happy memories of practically living at the Met. Opera in NYC, and enjoying every ballet I could see! What a delight it is to see this, to have it preserved for us and many others! We were so fortunate to see these great dancers in person. As someone wrote me: "We lived through La Belle Epoque de Ballet." He was so right! Many good wishes to you and to all the balletomanes out there!
I saw this in a movie theater when I was 14 with a friend. It was probably one of the very earliest ballets I saw. (Except maybe excerpts from Ed Sullivan.)
The scene of him lifting her and carrying her from the bed is astounding. The amount of strength and control that would have required on both their parts is mind-blowing. Absolute masters of their art.
I had seen them both but never together. Wow. When I was very small I saw Fonteyn in Swan Lake. After the Dance of the Dying Swan, I did not believe she had elbows like other people. My sisters had to convince me!
I remember seeing this film in the theatre when it was first released. I was 19 and enraptured. Four years later I saw this duo in person at the Metropolitan Opera in Swan Lake. I have seen many Swan Lakes since then but I have never seen a performance of Odette/Odile that could equal Fonteyn's. She was the swan. By then she was in her 50s and maybe not as physical as one of today's young dancers, but she made up for that by her exquisite movements and delicacy. I saw a lot of Nureyev in the 70s and never really cared for his solo work, but as a partner I have never seen anyone to beat him.
She was almost 50 yet watching her she appeared to be a teenager. Nureyev was in his 20's. A shame about the Aids! Fell for the 'PARTY' scene. Such a shame. We are losing young people all over the earth this way!
Stellar performance in the death of Tybalt scene by Julia Farron as Lady Capulet. I saw her dance this in 1970 (?), but not with Fonteyn or Nureyev. Wonder who Romeo and Juliet were played by.
Nureyev too, for a man, extraordinarily strong! Was just contemplating how easily, often & steadily he lifts her - so very high above his head: as if she were a bird in flight!!! Amazing performing artists, the two of them!!
@venerayamleeva Ulanova was a wonderful Juliet, but Fonteyn's performance was out of this world, and the chemistry between the two, has never been equalled. Of course that is my opinion.
Old woman? Your perception is so distorted??? There WERE other & younger women, dear... Margot was so good that she outshone them! She and Nureyev had such star power that it forced less talented dancers to leave town!
What I always wish, though, is to see the dance as choreographed-which was for the proscenium. Most of the line and ALL of the blocking (meaning the actual choreography) is LOST in shoots like this.
commennts here are pure non sens because most haven't even seen the first Romeo--Juliette coreo Noureev at Palais des congrès Paris ( 1985 ) ; in 1966 Fonteyn was 43 y old her career was at the end in 1959 ; for me h'm honest j saw Fonteyn as Aurora ( coreo Hightower ) in 1970 at Marseiille Opera : it was a calamity .
@@sedekiman824 in 1966 there was also Marcia Haydee- Richard Cragun ( coreo Cranko Romeo-Juliette movie ) no comparison , not frenchs danceurs : you push them also ? 😂
The problem is I'm watching Nureyev and Fonteyn not Romeo and Juliet. There is no way that I can believe Fonteyn is 14 year old Juliet. MacMillan choreographed the roles on Gable and Seymour and they are so much more believable. Reply
Gosh do I have mixed feelings about this one. I feel like I am peering through the big names to see the dance. Fonteyn is irrefutable, but hers is not the lightness, excitement or abandon of a 15 year old. Even the orchestra seems a bit en retard. I’ve often wondered what if R & J were staged unabashedly on “older” dancers (or actors) with the youngsters portraying their disapproving elders. I think THAT R & J would SELL. And PLAY!
