ROMEO [To JULIET] If I profane with my unworthiest hand This holy shrine, the gentle fine is this: My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss JULIET Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much, Which mannerly devotion shows in this; For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch, And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss. ROMEO Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too? JULIET Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer. ROMEO O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do; They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair JULIET Saints do not move, though grant for prayers' sake. ROMEO Then move not, while my prayer's effect I take. Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged JULIET Then have my lips the sin that they have took. ROMEO Sin from thy lips? O trespass sweetly urged! Give me my sin again.
DiCaprio, this boy's life, what's eating Gilbert grape, the quick and the dead, basketball diaries, Marvin's Room, Total eclipse, Romeo and Juliet, Titanic, all in a span of 5 years,. Did any other actor get that much calibre of roles to show off his acting talent, that is one MVP Career in 5 years, and with A list royalist in each movie
To have such a great run of movies in 5 years is honestly impressive and having an Oscar nomination in that run. Those are completely different characters he played and acting alongside such legendary names. Don’t think a lot has such a meteoric rise in a five year period while playing very different characters
He is saying that his two lips want to kiss her, her hand or her lips. They are using metaphors of his lips being pilgrims wanting to kiss the Saints hands, I.el her etc. She is saying no I’ll get your sin etc. On kissing her he says his sin has been purged. And so on...Christian imagery
Omg when ones 14 this was the epitome of romance to me, especially this version. Omg they’re SO TERRIBLE in this. The imagery is amazing, the update inspired (for the time you hadn’t seen it yet, or if it existed at all off off off off off off b, etc, it was not available on a broad spectrum or with such props and sets.
They’re SO AWFUL acting this though! I came here from Blood Diamond & my god Leo is a force of nature. And acting auteur now. Yet those Shakespeare line deliveries…uhhhhhh Claire was worse (always has been. Too stiff, nothing there. Never was/ always is. She’s not good. Is she related to someone in the business with money?
It was youthful infatuation, mixed with anxiety and bravado. How Shakespeare wrote it to be. I’m not overall a huge fan of this version but this scene is on point
Ok, let's just stop for a moment and consider a few things. This was originally written towards the end of the 16th century and they are showing balloons 0:04 ? What is this, a prom party or something? Secondly, those are electrical lights 1:05. There is NO flicker of a flame! No electricity in Shakespeare's time! Thirdly, the way the scene at 1:09 where the door opens looks and sounds too much like an elevator. Total failure. Looks like they just borrowed a generic Hollywood party mansion house.
The thing that gets me the most, is that they talk in modern English and have modern party stuff. Btw when I say modern English (you can look it up) it means the kind of talk from the 1500's and 1600's.
Pathetic. Compare with 1968, actors who actually understand the lines. Juliet should be worried when she says "Then have my lips the sin that they have took"--recognizing, as she does more at the end of the act, that this is a dangerous game socially and religiously. Romeo runs together "they pray" and "grant now" which are two different ideas. Shouldn't let Americans loose on Shakespeare, at least not when they haven't done their homework.
