Romulan Valdore Class (Full Breakdown/Analysis) 

It is a beautiful design! It is very much the Sovereign class of the Romulan imperial navy.

I like the name Valdore class the best. Great looking ship.

Paused it when you were discussing the bridge design and how it used all sorts of props laying around in the “Trek warehouse “ since the 80s. That and the comment about budget concerns clearly shows that Nemesis was about the systemic shutting down of the Franchise

After seeing mainly Klingon warships in the majority of Trek movies, It was nice to see the Romulan ships show up.

I always had the sense that the reasons for why the Valdores were taken out so easily in Nemesis when compared to the Enterprise-E was that Shinzon had the complete schematics for them, and thus knew exactly where to hit them to take them out. Plus the fact that, at that point, he still needed Picard alive for that blood transfusion to save his life, considering that he was dying

High speed, highly maneuverable, very low profile, excellent cloak, good ECM, pretty good range. Great firepower, decent defensive features. Low crew. Lower cost. Faster and easier to mass produce. The Valdore class is both the workhorse and the greatest asset of the Romulan Star Empire. At the point where Shinzon is taken out, they should be able to rebuild their government and get their hands on the Scimitar blueprints at the Reman research facility. Even without Romulus, Romulans should kick ass.

I had a geek-gasm when i first saw the Valdore on screen. It's sleek, elegant and sexy. My favorite Romulan design, followed closely by the Warbird. Would loved to have seen a fleet or battallion on screen, fighting the Scimitar.

I had always Thought that the Brown colored one was either a prototype, or an unfinished ship. They looked so new to the viewer, I imagined that they were also new to the Romulans.

Valdore Class is a direct answer to the dominion war. Faster, more agile, maneuverable and heavily armed. It has a low profile but not from the top or buttom this is a weak point.

The different names could be sub-type configurations. Kinda like WWII IJN Fubuki-class destroyers. Thet had 2 subtypes on the same hull frame. Ayanami-class and Akatsuki-class.

The Mogai is a beautiful piece of work and a worthy successor to the lessons learned during the Dominion War.

Their huge size all makes sense now. JJ Abrams clearly works for the Romulans.

It isn't uncommon in Navy terms to name sub classes of ships as something different, the County Class Cruiser for ex has several named sub-types, so Valdor, Mogai and nerixan could be just sub classes of the same ship

Glad we can finallly see different aspects of this ship! So little was shown in the movie considering that it was an all-new design. I really appreciate you guys showing it from all angles and perspectives like nobody else does!

I like calling it the Mogai class. This is an awesome ship. When I first saw them in the movie, in the theater, I was wowed, exclaiming, "Romulan Battlehawks!" I thought that was such a cool name.

One of the things I really like about this class is that the nacelles are not at the ends of the “wings” but the wings actually extend beyond them. This gives the impression that they are merely on a mount point on the “wing” structure as opposed to the end. Most of the ships basically have the nacelles on the ends of the struts and no matter how fancy they look; they still look like glorified nacelle struts. This gives it a more “fighter jet” feel to it.

Beautiful ship. My favourite Romulan ship. For the longest time, this ship was my desktop wallpaper. Always hated the Romulan Warbird from TNG that always reminds me of a sitting duck than a warbird. The Valdore class looks like it's got teetth and can run rings around its enemy in a firefight. Awesome vid, guys and thanks for posting.

Valdore was named after the Romulan Admiral in Enterprise. he was in charge of the Drone ships

"Cannon" was the first word that came to mind when I saw this ship. Very Romulan ship, great design. What's the best name for the ship Valdore, Norexan, Mogai? I prefer Mogai myself.

I was thinking about this ship last week. To bad we did'nt get much of a view after nemesis. Its very cool and sleek!

I really like the Valdore - in fact all of the TNG Romulan designs are great in my opinion (apart from the Scimitar, which I think was plain dumb). The huge size of the Romulan vessels compared to there Starfleet counterparts can be taken to show a lack of technological sophistication or the ships being designed with different mission profiles in mind.

N'ryxan-class, definitely, though it is reasonable to assume Starfleet would give it their own name at first before discovering what the official Romulan word is for this class of ship. It is sleek, very raptor-inspired, and very much a descendant of the Bird of Prey...if canon memory serves me right, we've always known there was a Klingon-Romulan technology trade. I've always been in love with the D'deridex-class, but you both were very right about it...it doesn't look like it was built for speed, just for sheer size and imposing presence. "Mogai" doesn't sound very Romulan to me, but if the Titan series is canon and they refer to it as such, who am I to argue with them? Just know that I will always refer to it as either "N'ryxan" or "Valdore". Great episode, Trekyards, and thank you for the review!

I finally saw Nemesis yesterday. I thought that I had seen all trek, but alas missed the latest one (chronologically speaking). These ships were amazing. As you guys kinda said, even mirroring even the Sovereigns move from the Galaxy to a more sleek and battle focused design, the Valdore is the upgrade if you will to the big bulky D'deridex and keeps true to the Romulan design. I loved the terminology of "thoroughtly less hittable"! and the rendered shots of a D'deridex flanked by these beauties were a gorgeous fleet shot for the romulans.

The D’deridex is designed as a show of strength, the Valdore is designed to be an efficient hunter.

Never got the large wings that has nothing meaningful but a large shooting area for the enemy

So when we saw Commander Donatra she was commanding the first ship of that class since her ship was the Valdore. Assuming the first ship and the class are the same name.

I find it hard to believe that the D'Deridex ever made up the majority of the Romulan fleet. The only reason we see it so much in TNG/DS9/VOY was due to budgetary concerns. I find it more likely that the Mogai class is a replacement for an ageing cruiser as opposed to the D'Deridex which is a Battleship. Different ships for different roles.

I dig the Valdore. Mogai class. Graceful lines, doesn't have the bulk of the D'Deridex, yet manages to pack enough menace that it's not easy pickings. It was one of the few good things to come out of Nemesis, along with her captain. ;) Would love to see this ship show up in the Picard show. While it has clear ties to the Klingon BoP, it can also be viewed as the purest (to date) distillation of the BoP we see in Balance of Terror. That had the Bird as hull decoration, whereas this is the Bird itself in the form of a ship. As for the BoP, in universe I believe the Klingons and Romulans worked on the ship together, tweaking an existing Klingon design for use with the cloaking device. Their technology exchange program would still have been in effect, and prior to their withdrawal after Undiscovered Country, they would have still been behind in ship building, still cranking out variations on the D7 and incorporating elements of it into their own ships, but not in huge numbers. It fits in well with the retro BoP from Enterprise, and is a good way to infuse the Klingon wing design into Romulan shipbuilding. From there it all diverges - the Klingons stick with the core BoP design, and find that it scales well, is cheap to produce, and can be modded easily. The Romulan aesthetic demanded it look better, more Romulan, so the Bird Of Prey, which would change to Warbird because it's just awkward to share a ship name with the Klingons, became the distinguishing element.

Mogai class for me. Valdore is name for the ship, commanded by Donatra.

First... And I actually watched the video before commenting, the valdore looks so cool!! Those pontoon nacelle things makes it look like the ship could land on a surface or water. Nice design!

One thing I've always felt from Romulan designs, especially during TNG, was that while the Romulans could match the Federation in technology, to do so they had to pay the price of much bulkier equipment. I mean, just look at the size difference between the Galaxy class and the Romulan Warbird. Yet the Romulan's felt they needed two warbirds to match Enterprise. Also add to that the early TNG episodes establish the Warbirds are slower than the Galaxy and have to burn out their engines to beat them in speed. The Valdore is the Romulans finally getting good enough to scale down without losing effectiveness. You likely could build 2-3 Valdores for what it cost in raw resources for an Old Warbird.

It looks like the TNG era ship was built to intimidate the Galaxy-class starship and the Dominion War they must have found many flaws and the biggest one was that it could not be mass produced. Also possible power issues and the advancement of technology they decided it was better to build a new ship also refit the ones they did have. Also, Starfleet is doing it we better get working.

Its like a "Adastra superyacht trimaran"...cool!

With present-day programmable or intelligent precision munition in mind, I think negative space doesn't reduce the risks of being a target very much, let alone centuries later. That said, this Romulan ship is a beauty.

The only thing I can add is that the food replicators on this ship were able to absolutely nail Yorkshire Pudding and gravy

Call it the Valdore Class Romulan ship. Call it the Mogai(?) Class Klingon ship since we're all one big happy fleet by the year 2400. Unification by the big 3 powers in the Alpha Quadrant.

My STO Romulan Republic engineering character uses this ship from time to time as well as the Faeht class.

Until we get a class name on screen (therefore in canon) I think Valdor type work for now. The size, although smaller than the d’deridex, says battle cruiser rather than small bird of prey. That’s just my opinion your results may vary

I believe the valdore class ship is more or less comparable to that of.the Akira and vor'cha class ships in terms of firepower and shields. I believe they wanted a ship with reasonably high firepower with reasonable numbers. That why you have more of them then d'deridex, similar in concept to the Akira and vor'cha even though vor'cha is older then negh'var class.

My theory is there was a lot more Romulan/Klingon marriages than we were told about. I think TNG Romulans almost all have some Klingon DNA in them that is why they have some ridges on their heads the Vulcans do not. It also makes sense that the Romulans / Klingons that moved in together that Worf found while looking for his father in the TNG-DS9 crossover episode. Also house of Duras (and obviously other houses) were OK with Romulans, while the other houses were so against Romulans they were clearly secretly pro-Romulan.

The books mention the Romulan Navy has several classes that were meant to never operate outside Romulan space. this could be one of them.

I think that the Valdore could be said to be a version of that class. Like a Command variant.

I would say Mogai class, but then i play STO. As for classification, The D'deridex is like a battleship this class is like a cruiser it is more practical for patrolling and response than having a ship to big for some things.

The only reason I liked the warbirds was that one cutscen in Star Trek Armada when the defiant flys through one blowing it away.

The Iowa class battleships we're bigger bow to stern then the Yamato, but in terms of displacement, didn't even come close.

4:46 I’d like to hear John Eaves’ thoughts on designs like the Terrorbird and Vas’deletham. 9:45 If Voyager can hit a photonic missile from orbit then they’ll be able to hit the Valdore. A much better explanation would be that they take less time and resources to (re)build.

It's a Klingon Bird of Prey with a different head and two added nacelles. That's it. I don't know how this gets passed off as a Romulan ship.

Reminds me of the Klingon warbird, just much bigger and more powerful.

Honestly I love this ship, and I think I like the name mogai best. But while the ship is thinner than the old warbird it’s not thinner than other object like shuttles and torpedos that targeting sensors in Trek have no problem hitting so I don’t really know if it would provide any real difference to getting hit in combat it’s still pretty big ship.

So - can we get consensus on what width the D'Deridex was mean't to be? As I remember it being wider (and squatter) than this.

Just looking a the picture, my mind is wondering whats with the air scoops.

Always thought the Valdore began on the design table after the failed attack on the founders home world and the intel Starfleet shared with the romulans. Also I feel it’s build and ext. was speed up during d demion was as the duderadex couldn’t handle the manoverability of the galor class or demion attack fighters.

I would have liked to see the other colour in more detail - I like the Bronze one too. Also you didn't say where the CGI model came from this time ?

The Romulan high command was like, the battle cruiser is awesome, during the Federation Romulan cold war, than the Dominion out maneuvered it and out gunned it, let's keep the fire power and add maneuverability great build it, yes praetor...

Beautiful ship but damn the Romulan government for not helping the Enterprise. And damn the Federation fleet for not crossing border when the Flagship of Starfleet is in danger. And also damn the Klingons for passing up a chance to fight the Scimitar but they probably didn't know.

damn, that makes 3 Trek ships I would love to have a good 3D model for renders (that are not 3D-printer spaghetti-mesh or broken 3ds/max files). Like the D7/k'tinga and D6(Axanar), that is a beautiful ship. I guess I'll just need to get better at making 3D stuff and just make them myself for 3delight rendering, it will only take ten or more years to get that good, lol. Great vid Samuel and Foley. The Valdore is so awesome, the only way the D'deridex can match it is if it decloaked and 4 Defiants came bursting out from the negative space with phasers blazing!

I prefer the sleeker Valdore to the larger,bulkier D'deridex class.

Beautiful ship, but in space it makes no sense to have a long skiny wings. Everything around a tight center makes more sns for so many reasons. Only reason would be engines need such a setup for radiation or some such issue. Would a ship this size ever go into an atmosphere? No alot of interior room for its size, and a pain to dock.

I want to love this design, but it's missing a "tail." Romulan ships need a tail or at least the suggestion of one.

Ugh! The Valdore, and its companion ship the Norexa, are Mogai class Warbirds. Why people can't get this right...
