Aerodynamics in a spaceship,at least in the star trek universe,is important because they often have to pass through gaseous formations whether nebula's or weakened ionized plasma flares being emitted by stars,etc...where shields often can't be used for whatever reason. So you guys shouldn't feel bad if you refer to it when describing them. I can't help but wonder if the warp ring is supposed to actually swivel down protecting it during combat at impulse speeds by the main hull. I never realized how similar the vulcan ships,including the shuttle/captains yacht,look like the stargate ori ships including the fighters. That vulcan yacht was VERY cool. Another thing to think about is the large "wasted"space this has similar to the romulan d'deridex class,a hint at their common ancestry? The ring/circle makes me think of "infinite diversity in infinite combinations",like the infinity symbol.

So here is a question: Vulcans join the Federation, but why don't their ship designs get incorporated into the Federation fleet. Why does the Federation fleet look only like those made from earth? Was this ever explained int Star Trek canon?
@colanitower
@colanitower 6 лет назад
I have the same question. It seems odd that the Federation ends up with Earth designs when it incorporates races with more advanced warp capability. I would expect a few generations of Vulcan tech dominated ship classes and Andorian-tech dominated ship classes, and a few others not from Earth, with gradually increasing Earth influence. The non-saucer-2nacelles Federation starships are missing.

Starfleet was founded on earth, is based on earth, and the Vulcans decided they needed to keep their own fleet for whatever reason, starfleet was for the (literally) stupid Vulcans who failed school, and Starfleet (what you refer to as "federation fleet") did get the andorian Imperial guard soaked up into itself.

this is in reply to the exterior details comments: Vulcan have always had a sense of aesthetically pleasing styles. Usually downplayed by the Vulcan themselves but it seems pretty self evident in T'Pol's clothing, the Zen(ish)/Feng Shui type interior design, their ships, and the few city scapes we're afforded through out the series history, that Vulcans prefer simple beauty. Why be ugly and drab when it can just as easily be beautiful and sleek. Seems logical to me. :o)

This makes me wonder how the Terran Empire in the Mirror universe conquered Vulcan if their ships are much more advanced than the Terran ships.

Vulcans are logical, but they are also very creative. It's a high culture. I think those ships fit that pretty well.

Enterprise showed that, prior the Federation, the Vulcan R&D was very slow & methodical. With their long lifespans, they could afford this approach, moving at their own pace. We also know-- primarily from the movies-- that Vulcan society had a rich, TRADITIONAL way of doing things which, while not purely logical, expressed itself in their design aesthetic. We also saw that, in the era of ST:Enterprise, the Vulcans were not yet the adaptively logical society seen in TOS, on. All of that needs to be taken into account when studying Vulcan ships: long lifespans, slow & methodical, a reverence for traditional designs. I always assumed that, because the Federation was conceived as a sort of interstellar United Nations, the different member planets/species were still sovereign nations with their own commercial & defense fleets. The Federation Starfleet probably grew out of an initial amalgamation of the different militaries, at least until naval architects could discuss & analyze the engineering & compliment merits of each species' best starships. Starfleet vessels represent the best compromise between different warp drives & engineering philosophies. Given that it would be practical for Vulcans to build with respect to their lifespans, many of the original craft seen in the era of Enterprise would still be around in TOS. They would have been upgraded as new technologies became proven & available. Membership in the Federation created a platform for the easy sharing & merging of ideas, which the formerly standoffish Vulcans had avoided in their own, cautious interspecies relations.

To me at least that the Vulcans were traditionalists almost as much as they were logical (we got remember that vulcans aren't unfeelings but rather they supress those emotions in favor of a more logic based way of thinking), So those hull details could something "since our heavy cruisers always had this style of hull details and there's no logical reason not to have them, this ship will have them".PS.was there every a version without the ring?, all I can remember are versions where the ring was turned 90 degrees so it was inside that "hole" in the hull but never one where the ring was missing. Even the damaged ship from season 3 ENT had the warp ring present (I can't remember if it was intact or not though)

To a point i have raised on previous videos: When you do the side-by-side comparison of the Ent-E to the D'kyr it is misleading. The Ent-E is aided in its length by the nacelles extending long off the back of the ship. Since the nacelles provide no functional useful space, it would be more appropriate to adjust the image so the back of the D'kyr lines up with the rear of the secondary hull of the Ent-E. Doing so would provide a much more useful representation of scale. Going forward it would be great if you could make the adjustment of removing the extra length the nacelles provide to your comparison shots, as it would in some cases reveal dramatically different size comparisons. Thank you, Love the work and the videos you are making. It has been fun watching your subscription base jump ~3K in the last few months. Looking forward to that 20K mark.

Four minutes into it and the captain is questioning the LOGIC of the contoured hull compared to the presumably "perfect" TOS Connie. I would say this is an example of the balance of two conflicting concepts of designing anything from a Walkman to a starship where smooth simple lines make construction easier but adds mass and leaves wasted space in the final product and contouring requires I higher degree of craftsmanship but is difficult to accommodate post production upgrades. That being said.... Where is the LOGIC in Windows? I picture a Vulcan ship to be almost completely devoid of Windows other than in communal gathering areas. I don't yet know if the episode or any other Vulcan ship episode brings it up but I would expect a Vulcan ship to be designed more like any naval vessel or military housing structure with privacy concerns at a bare minimum .
@gordonstark6538
@gordonstark6538 6 лет назад
The detail on the ship's hull matches more contemporary styling of Vulcan architecture; looks like it's based on European curvilinear Art Nouveau (early 20th C design)- like designers such as Georges de Feure and Victor Horta both of which look really alien compared with their contemporaries and used a lot by SF illustrators. The circular annular drive ring ties into that aesthetic .
@adamlytle2615

Maybe I'm reading too much into the fact that Sarek disapproved of Spock's choice to join Starfleet, buy I always got the impression that while Vulcan was a member of the Federation, they didn't necessarily enthusiastically participate in the development of Starfleet. We even saw Vulcan ships in the TNG era, so even hundreds of years later they maintained their own ships.
@biostemm
@biostemm 7 лет назад
I know it's a nitpick, but Vulcans are not, inherently, logical - they practice a regiment of self discipline and emotional suppression. They also, (at least when depicted in the various shows and movies), do clearly display emotion, and just use logic as a rationalization, and are very subjective with their logic, to boot.
@MrSheckstr
@MrSheckstr 7 лет назад
Don't feel bad about calling something aerodynamic... even if MOST of space is mostly empty with the few stray grains of matter deflected away, there are still denser sections and atmospheres where your ship MIGHT find itself
@ajzebadua
@ajzebadua 7 лет назад
Ori motherships always reminded me of D'kyrs tbh, I sometimes imagined Ori being Romulans that took Vulcan ships and made them larger, followed the evil path, etc. I seem to remember the D'kyr being called a science vessel in STO btw.
@MaxYAVIN
@MaxYAVIN 7 лет назад
I think you have missed an important historical detail! The Vulcans of the first 3 seasons are far more militaristic than the Vulcans of the TOS area. Maybe they have abandoned building these kind of warships because of the cultural changes in season 4?
@mikestoast
@mikestoast 7 лет назад
To add to the "aerodynamic" argument. Why not have space ships fit that aesthetic, a species would have art and culture (something the Vulcans are very big on) and that always influences designs, as well as other flora and fauna to draw inspiration from. Function should always supersede form, however, they can be integrated. Look to every car ever produced or any aspect or architecture and industrial design. It would only stand to reason that we would take the fundamental lessons learned over time and apply them to ship design as well and with that the aerodynamic look of a ship will always work. also the classic "but do we know for sure it cannot land or enter an atmosphere?"

4:27 I find it curious you said that, especially considering Doug’s comments about this ship. 5:48 In the novels the Terran Empire only defeated the Vulcans because of a mutual threat in the Kzinti. 6:00 Imagine an XCV-330 next to a D’Kyr in a “humanity aspiring to vulcanity’s level of spaceflight”-sort of way. 6:30 Organic. In the background on the Jellyfish it was postulated that the Vulcans grew their ships. 16:22 It reminds me of the Multispatial probe designed by Tuvok. 17:40 The USS Defiant obliterated a D’Kyr, so yeah. 18:10 That was a Vulcan-Starfleet cooperation. 20:22 Did the Romulans invent warp drive separately from the Vulcans or is the D’deridex meant to be a throw-back to the ringships?

We want these in "glorious 1080p". The res of these 720p destroys Commander Cockings awesome renders :( The render times on comps this simple are not that much longer compared to the quality upgrade we would enjoy ... anyhoo. keep up the work! I watch Trekyards almost every day
@power543
@power543 7 лет назад
Ha! well then you have not rendered at 1080 with studio assets before. I 1280x720 to 1920x1080 means i need to increase the AA as well to go with that so you are looking at 2x the render time...per image THEN because the whole show would be 1080 that would make the file size over a gig and take longer to render and then longer to upload...this for every single image, every single week it all mounts up and with the amount of content we do its hard enough as it is. Fleetyards Mission Briefing is the exception and i do those in a certain way at certain times to make it more practical. Its a huge jump from 720 to 1080 even on modern computers and even with my powerful rig, maybe in the future with another computer improvement...and someone else being brought on the team to edit say the podcast and other simple shows to give me more time to put towards that. If we get more views, more fans and more financial support patreon all these things are possible but not at the moment, and i really don't think "destroys" is the right word as they are all new renders of these ships, clean and viable...where else can you see renders of the studio models like this!
@InvisibleLightRec
@InvisibleLightRec 7 лет назад
+power543 let's get you a dedicated render machine/server. just for the high res output renders. do all the previews in like half quality and 720. I render video in 1080p to 4K every day so I know the differences. I think a Kickstarter with a long deadline for a cost effective render machine and more drives for you is something you guys should consider. Gives us 1080p and much more detail (hello! everyone should love that) and gives you more time for creative work. Not boring renders hehe. Think about it :)
@power543
@power543 7 лет назад
Solid Copy if you run a set up like that would you be able to help with setting us up one, advice and such? I do agree 1080 would be ideal but with what i do and how far i push what i do time and render wise its impractical with the shows. We use Lightwave 3D so would need it all CPU based as it doesnt work with the GPU. If you can help then maybe we can make it a reality! (what do you render with for 3D annimation work?)

It both is and isn't Canon to some people's minds - the first run through of the timeline was more FASA like and then due to various alterations made in the 23rd and 24th centuries the past is re-written the JJ-verse timeline 100% has Enterprise (or close to it) as it's past though. but you get into complex questions of causality then. Some things require some real crowbarring to fit Zephram Cochraine for a start.

The Vulcans are essentially a bunch of religious fundamentalist Romulins. They fled Romulis on a sub-light generational ship thousands of years ago. I suspect when they arrived in the Vulcan system they were a little disheartened to find no habitable planets. Having exhausted their resources they decided to colonize the best planet. The harshness of Vulcan kept their population low but forced rapid technological advancement. I suspect in the first few generations the Vulcans invested heavily into genetic engineering to adapt their physiology to the harsh conditions on Vulcan, the legacy of which is contemporary heartiness of Vulcans. Romulins are not known for their heartiness. By the 22nd century Vulcan technology had advanced beyond that of their neighboring contemporary species but their population was still only around a billion and largely confined to Vulcan. The Vulcans were aware that their superior technology would not be able to protect them against the superior numbers of their neighbors. this was compounded by the fact that their technological advantage was shrinking while at the same time the numerical advantage of their neighbors was increasing. I believe the Vulcans took a long term view of their situation, if they did nothing the probability of war with the younger races increased and the probability of loosing also increased. The logical solution was to integrate the Vulcan civilization into a larger civilization, thus negating the numerical superiority of their enemies. To this end the Vulcans began to study the younger races in their vicinity. They discovered that the cultures of Humans, Tellerites and Andorians were highly malleable between generations. I believe the Vulcans then began a very intentional campaign to modify the cultures of these civilizations such that they would become more cosmopolitan, equitable, peaceful, scientifically literate, respectful of authority, duty and capability; essentially all the qualities a society would need to accept Vulcans among them and in positions of leadership.
