Of the child actors from the shows of our era, Ron Howard was one of the few that made it to adult hood without being messed up. Could it have been the environment that he was surrounded with? Just good, decent kind hearted people doing their jobs. Looking out after each other. No, I don' t care for Ron or Andy' s political views. That is their business. I never saw them push it their work. Thank you Mr Griffith for the memories. RIP.
Great talent begets other great talent. Great mentors are to be admired, respected, and acknowledged. Ron Howard knows and shares this wisdom. So should we all.

YES. I was born and raised in a town like Mayberry. I sheriff, and 1 deputy. No police dept. No red lights. Just signs. Very few cars. Children were safe walking through town at any age. We all knew each other. Only fly in the ointment..it was North Dakota, not North Carolina. And...it was usually 50 below 0 for 4 months straight. I do miss it.
One thing I want to point out, Andy Griffith was not a racist! Andy loved everybody, no matter who you were. There will be no man in the entertainment business like him ever again. Andy was great in Matlock! I believe Andy was one of the entertainers that PUSHED that Black People should be on TV. Andy Griffith he broke the barrier of the Racism of the 60s. So did Dick Van Dyke & Mary Tyler Moore! This allowed greats like Bill Cosby make it big on TV. Bill Cosby is like Andy, he loves everybody!
Andy was indeed a teacher; I can't recall whether it was an English class or History, but he taught at my sister's High School. Like many of us, Andy bounced (by accident) an occasional check way back then, but made good on the debt, later. A local merchant kept one such check, and proudly displayed it in a frame when Andy's career took off. Where ever I've been in the world, The Andy Griffith show has always reminded me of my rural North Carolina roots. His death leaves a great void.
To me the Andy Griffith show, was about an idealic town, from the point of view of a Sheriff who lived as he believed in taking care of his town and enforcing the laws with his intelligence and common human sense, instead of a gun all the time. Mayberry, Its a place you could be a human being without the hysteria in real life of "everyone is guilty until government documents that your not."
We lost Andy and Don from Mayberry, what's next? Losing America's sweetheart Shirley Temple? These people and the ones who I haven't mentioned will be deeply missed. Great television back then, which we can't see today b/c things changed
I think what he is saying in a nutshell is the difference between book smarts and street smarts. Many people in this world are wise through their perspective of the world and how to go about things regardless of their educational experience. I understand your comment as that he may not know his costar and friend very well, but I think it is meant to imply he achieved his success and direction by his own means.
RON ! I simply can't believe that you did not know that Andy attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and acted at Playmakers theatre. That's how he got into acting, He was not 'self-taught'..It's difficult to imagine that you never knew that.
I was confused by Howard's recollections of the show bc a lot of what he said contradicts Griffith's own bio (on Wikipedia, IMDB as well as his own website). Griffith said he started out as a stand up comedian (supposedly his character was supposed to be funny), but in his role on Andy Griffith, he pulled back and and used himself as a FOIL to Don Knotts- he said it "was better for the show". I know Howard was young at the time, but "I don't remember the cast member's bios" would have sounded b
