Ron Sexsmith performing Gerry Rafferty's 'Right Down the Line', from the tribute concert at Celtic Connections, January 2012. 'Family Tree' from the same concert: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00ntcg3
I think what he’s trying to say is this song is a touchstone song for a couple generations of fans and yet so few today know of the song let alone the songs laser tight lyricist, Gerry Rafferty. The man is a Scottish John Lennon and Fats Domino in one!
@@LaGrandeBayou not trying to be negative but the "laser tight lyricist" made me laugh. Don't get me wrong, right down the line is an absolute favourite of mine but I always find the like "you've been as constant as the Northern star" to be such a jarring/glaring road bump in an otherwise smooth song. Could have so easily been smoothed out too.
@@LaGrandeBayou hey, forst off, i'm glad someone's enjoying it, seriously. That said, it's not the meaning i was picking on, just the mouthful and extra syllables that makes it sound really garbled and rushed in most versions of the song. Even if you stick with the exact words there are more smooth was of spacing them out that I've heard cover artists use in order to match the smoothness of the rest of the song
This song really encapsulates what makes so many men love their wives and girlfriends for:sticking with them during the hard times and supporting them. It’s a beautiful song.
That's a big song to do live with elegance - he pulls it off, and the vocal harmonies are beautiful. It's utterly Ron, that song. And from a great album. Ron's composed and performed many amazing songs of his own - from beautiful little vignettes to bolshie rock crunchers. Generally though Ron is just quietly cool.
A Stunning performance by Sexsmith and band mates..Thank You for an absolutely stellar version of a timeless classic rock anthem of the 70s. Gerry Rafferty could not have done Scotland any prouder.
I absolutely love Ron's treatment of this classic. How is it that I'm 47 years old and just now realizing he hails from my hometown of St. Catharines, Ontario Canada. Life is a strange and mysterious journey.
Had forgotten how much I love Ron Sexsmith. Of course he's the natural fit to do this one justice. Unique voice that sets him apart as a chill and authentic crooner
After listening to Rock and Roll for 50+ years Ron is my favorite songwriter of all time. I think he also does great covers, usually better than the original. After meeting him a few times I think he is an even better human being than musician-which is saying a lot! Once when we saw him live someone yelled to him onstage to "Smile!" His response was "I'm beaming on the inside". I think he truly is.
The sort of statement you expect from a 15 year old girl while shes watching her teenage heart throb murdering the classics. Jesus man. You should know better lol
I hadn't heard much of Ron Sexsmith's music at the time of this concert, but I'd been a fan of Gerry Rafferty's music for many years. This performance inspired me to purchase the recently released "Long Player Late Bloomer" album... and what an album! Needless to say, I have purchased many of his albums since then!
Wow.... Ron is truly a great musician, I love listening to his own material but this really shines. Nice touch to this song. Its my favorite Gerry Rafferty song also and he really does it justice. Thank you Ron
So nice to hear Ron sing this live, some people saying negative things are comparing a live vocal delivery to a super slick produced recording . Ron is a great live artist . 💕☘
@@producermarin2480 I have seen Ron live at the Union Chapel in London and he was great. A sincere and lovely man and talented songwriter, much underrated.
Always thought Ron Sexsmith looked like a sort of sobby mad kid who didn,t get his way.Man I don,t know how they,re getting through those harmonies it,s like every one is on the edge flat and sharp.Other wise Ron is one of the great ones to have come along in decades.
I went to Rons concert in Edinburgh I got tears in my eyes when he played this. Gave myself a good pep talk which consisted of "MAN UP!!! BLOOOODY MAAAAN UP WOULD YOU!!!!" Haha!
There is a unique, almost "jagged edge" or "off note" harmony with these singers. I'm not sure if I like the way he almost sounds a note or two off key, but it does work in a way. The back up band is outstanding! The accompanying girls are also awesome. They all did Gerry proud. He's smilin' down on them for sure.
Didn't realize Betsy Cook was in this video until I saw it a second time and saw her name on the heading. Betsy can be seen about 35 years younger playing keyboard on the "Days Gone Down" video. Pretty woman for sure.
Okay, I'm sorry that I don't know who this guy is. But he did an amazing job on one of my favorite songs of all time. His pronunciations are spot on. Even "wooman" is done right. Hats off to this young man. Well done sir.
You need to do yourself a favor and download all of Ron's albums, he's the closest thing we've had in the 2000's to the classic singer/songwriters of the 70's. Many of his songs have been covered by other artists. Rod Steward does a great version of Ron's 'Secret Heart'. Start with that one.
The guitarist is Hugh Burns who played with Gerry Rafferty over a number of years and who played guitar on the original of this song. He also played guitar for Wham for quite a while, but I can't help thinking that his talents were wasted there - instead check out his guitar work on Rafferty's albums 'Night Owl' and 'City to City'.
If I am not mistaken, he also played that incredible guitar solo on the long version of "Fame" by Irene Cara. The solo heats up at 3:04 /watch?v=nTJHjuhCYos His solo on Baker street is clearliy memorable as well.
A plaintive version of this plaintive song - worthy of the original. Thank you very much for the chance to hear this. Love is what matters most. May peace be with us all.
