When I was a teenager, I fell in love with this movie, and would watch it on repeat. I'd started watching it again the past few nights, and forgot how much I loved it. What I love about it is how it just stays intense, the characters, the plot, the music, the whole way through. It's the art of the chase, I think. It never lets up. But I had no idea this ending even existed. Crazy!
@@VIRGOLEGACY it would be fun to see their take on another movie. Although that ship has sailed it is still fun to imagine. If it was made now someone would try making it like the movies RED rather than what this is-- professionals being the best at their craft.
This is the version I saw in the theater on opening night, and I was very confused seeing the standard ending on the DVD. When I posted my thoughts on IMDB, people thought I was misremembering, then another edition (laser disc?) with the alt-ending started popping up on video channels, that was apparently released theatrically in certain areas and I was vindicated.
Since of my friends had a similar experience with Aliens 3. They saw it opening night and swear there was a scene at the beginning that showed Newt getting killed by aliens. I haven't ever seen that scene anywhere but I've never liked for it either.
@@spiralfirst6488 LOL, I must have an exceptional imagination (or a time machine) because I posted about this on the IMDB forums (back when they had them) way before I saw the DVD and the alternate ending. P.S. On IMDB others mentioned seeing this ending as well, including people from Canada and Australia.
Whether or not you think Deirdre being killed is good for the story, it cannot be denied that including her abduction in this sequence really disrupts the pacing and tone of the film's final moments. What is a quiet sequence of deep contemplation becomes a cheap exercise in shallow dramatic irony. I'm glad it was cut.
I disagree; her looking for Sam is a nice parallel to his hoping that she would be there, and shows that their relationship transcended their roles and professionalism... and, in the end, that would cost her life.
It could have been a good ending to have Ronin 2 where he somehow knows that girl is in trouble. Save her on time. And now entire organization after them 😂
This was on the DVD but not included on the Bluray . This was a great film about a bunch of ex operatives who are still in the business but on their own . They don't make action films like this anymore with real car chases with a bunch of great actors . In a way we wanted her to go down to the café but she didn't and paid the price for being with Shamus and the IRA got her . The theatrical cut made her fate as we never know rather than seeing her get snatched off the street . I'm glad someone posted this since I had told people on the net about this ending years ago .
It might not be that their complaint was that she betrayed her boss, but rather that by following him she betrayed the guys who grabbed her. It might also be that was the CIA cleaning up loose ends, that DeNiro had been the bait to lure her. There are a lot of angles they could have played with this movie, the benefits of a great story and top notch talent on both sides of the camera.
They were right not to use this ending. How would they know that she 'betrayed' her boss? Her boss shot three people and got killed in the arena. She could easily just say that he never made it back to the car, so she drove off. There's not a real logical reason as to why they would be so certain she betrayed him that they came to grab her and 'avenge' her boss especially after she single-handedly rescued him earlier in the movie.
That same van (same model and color MB Sprinter) was also in the scene where they get ready to buy the weapons (where they get ambushed). So someone in her own organization probably took her out, judging from the same van.
Liked the theatrical ending better. Sam's last glimpse around before the car pulls away; you know that he will always remember her, always expecting to see her around the next corner....
Thanks for posting this. But I am glad it was not used. It's a bit too depressing for me. Dierdre was basically alright... just got messed up with a bad man. I would have preferred it if they showed her walking to her car and no more. She debated - but chose to not go to the cafe. And now she was off on her own - to pickup the pieces of her life. ☮
That would be a great idea, I really like them in the same film being on the same side. I love Jean Reno's voice and accent. it is actually quite difficult for me to see him as another character than Leon but he is a great actor.
I'm a bit torn. On one had, it definitely closes anything between Deidre and Sam. It also feels very plausible and likely. At the same time, I like the open ending better because it's left to the imagination. I didn't care about Deidre (or any of them) either way, so her dying wasn't an issue with me. Either way, I don't think she ended well. She either leaves with nothing and no choice but to move on to another life or dies. :/
Ronin and Heat are the only two films I can stomach DeNiro in. Both amazing performances in brilliantly crafted films. Kilmer and Reno both the perfect co star.
While this ending gives a little more closure, it kind of goes against the grain of the rest of the movie. We never learn what’s in the case and we don’t really know any of the characters’ backstories.
It's so eerie without any soundtrack! Maybe that's got me a little biased, but I prefer the final cut. We imagine Deirdre is 'dealt' with, or we can imagine she meets up with him again. I prefer the latter, but the open ending is better.
Yea I think that's why they got rid of those clips from the ending. It's better to leave something to the imagination.. a technique that's often forgotten by a lot of modern film-makers...
Didn't like this ending. I'd like to think they hooked up later on but that's the romantic in me. Although she was right about one thing. "We never forget."
I guess Deirdre got what was coming to her while I appreciate seeing what happened to her I guess it’s more effective to leave it mystery what happened to her or where she went !
IT was on the laserdisc version, the problem with blu rays of older movies like this, is they put hardly any special features on them, the blu ray for this just has the trailer..I was disappointed the blu ray of this did not have the deleted scene...thank god for yourtube :)...thanks for posting as I just watched the blu ray and decided to watch the deleted scene but I was surprised to see it wasn't there.
This would have been a perfectly great ending. Fine with the theatrical ending, it was also good. But this would have been a gut punch to the "happy ending" and I think would have been better. But audiences be weiners crying for fully happy endings won't let anything different happen.
@justjeff386, I'm not sure how the theatrical ending was necessarily a happy one for Deirdre. Yes, it got her away from Seamus, but as to what kind of life she could have afterwards, we weren't given any real clue.
@yeabakalesny That's interesting! Thanks a lot for the video. I've read some discussions on forums and some guys said that it was included on some dvd's though nobody seems to have seen them:-) Poor Deirdre though :-((
i have the dvd with this alternate ending. frankenheimer did it right in the final cut; this alternate ending is what you'd think would happen. but the whole movie is about people that know, and people that don't. that's why i'm glad he chose the ambiguous ending, you believe what you want to believe actually happened. and the case had IRA documents that would've gotten Seamus back into the fold as he had gone rogue and needed to do something to get back in. the russians, english and americans wanted the case to ensure that Seamus was killed by the ira and would not be in power or part of the group anymore.
yah, I bought my DVD in 2002, this ending and yet another one (i think??? I might be mistaken but i truly believe there are two alternate endings on the disc, not trying to mislead anyone). anyways I prefer the actual ending, with Dierdre not showing up, and Vincent so beautifully, coldly yet understandingly, narrating the movie's final frames as he walks off one last time up the steps of Montmartre. just as by chance as they first met, they dissolve back into their respective worlds... ;-(((
There could have been a sequel following this tragic ending, with Sam finding out about Dierdre's murder (after just missing her at the tavern) and taking revenge on the thugs who did it, one by one, while completing his next assignment.
Like @bgathing says, they wouldn't know she betrayed her boss. I believe this ending is like @godzillasmother says, the CIA tying up loose ends and used Deniro to bait her there. The director obviously likes the viewer to use their imagination to fill in the gaps just as they never said was in the case...cliffhangers, I hate 'em
@ChuckFin321, Much more likely the IRA getting rid of anyone who had been working with Seamus, who had basically become an apostate to the cause, from their pov.
The radio reports just before this scene state Seamus was rogue and the IRA had disowned him. Earlier in the movie Deidre asks Seamus why he didn't handle the operation himself and says it's because he's in hiding implying he only has Deidre; after all where were these IRA men during the entire hunt for the case? They could have carried out the job. So this alternative ending doesn't add up. Edit: could be because Deirdre helped Seamus. Either way prefer the actual ending.
It was very sad that she died. Did Seamus ordered this to happen? Also it's good that they don't actually show her die so the visual effects are not needed.
Im ok with this cut. It's so cringy for her to come back. She knows Sam is CIA so there's nothing to return too. And if she was afraid of any remnants of the IRA rogue chapter she'd be more careful than to go to a known rendezvous point of the terrorists. This was my favorite movie in my teenage years. I thought this was a realistic spy movie (I just watched it Sam was a supersoldier a truly one man army so that kind of kills it for me) , I grew out of the genre. But I think the most realistic was the spy game.
I like this ending better. Why does the movie act like Derdre is a good person? she murdered an innocent figure skater in front of her child. What the fuck is her problem? that shit is cold. Why should i feel bad for her that her IRA (aka Hamas for white people) buddies finally turn on her?
That was the right ending this Hollywood and happy endings for women is old, karma is a bitch in the real world and it should be in the movies, we are starting to see this more in movies today of real life endings like 3 billboards
@jamesmorrison185, How was the theatrical ending a happy ending for her? Yes, she escaped Seamus' tender mercies, but there's nothing shown leading us to believe her fate will be a positive one. Obviously, no get together with Sam is going to occur. Are you objecting just to fit a narrative you've had in general, about movies over time?
I've only just learned of this alternate ending, and I wish it had stayed in to give the ending an extra dimension. I've always felt the ending was a bit too Hollywood and saccharine.
I thought the troubles intrigue shouldered the movie towards stupidity. Let's have a good action movie between characters, not fudged relevance. Also, too many of the cat hardly brought their a game. Jonathan Pryce's accent was particularly atrocious, but Jean Reno was outcooled drastically by De Niro to the extent his character became virtually irrelevant. Good car chases (which get repetitive) but a massive letdown of a movie.
