Initial Impression - Un-boxing
• Simple boxing. Lubricated.
• Segeo cording ... nice and heavy
• Lose fit on the saya
• Sharp blade
• HEAVY blade
• Solid build
• All fittings were tight
Cutting Experiences
• Matthew Jensen clips - shows durability of the 1060 Steel, tempering, and heat treating.
• Blade was prohibitively heavy.
• Unweildy ... was difficult to control
• Still solid RK build.
Overall Impressions
• Feeling that RK simply took the Model #14 and extended the length of the blade.
• O Katana build should have either a longer tsuka "handle" or a bohi "fuller".
• The saya has bad blade rattle.
• Still has a solid build typical of RK products.
• Recommendation: If you are looking for an 'O' katana ... while the RK is a very good solid build it is not correctly designed.

I'm glad it was helpful. RK make a good basic product. Can't complain about their builds or how sharp they come right out of the box. Sturdy choice ... she'll take a lickin and keep on tickin!!

Cold Steel O-KAtanas I do not have experience with. I thought this one was too heavy ... though solidly built. My fav was the O-Katana I got through Ryujin. Nice balance ... good T10 blade.

Ryujin is a nice middle ground brand between the mass producers like Hanwei and Dragon King and the design it yourself brands like Swords of Northshire. AND!! ... they pop 'em out pretty fast if you go through Sword Buyers Guide. There are compromises to be sure. But ... for the money it's a good brand. I did sell mine off ... yes.

@@mrstarfishh33 No ... not at all. Both Hanwei and Dragon King have some VERY good models. Before I go any further ... what kind of katana are you looking for? What do you want to do with it and how much do you want to spend?
@mrstarfishh33
@mrstarfishh33 Год назад
@@mr.excalibur1455 so I would pry spend up to $1000. I honestly just want something well made. I have read alot about loose construction, poor ito wrap (handle wrap?), Poor fittings etc. I def want all that to be as nice as it can. I realistically won't do much cutting. Ill mostly just mess around with it in my apt. I also really want something longer than typical katanas, ideally 29"-33" That's why I have been looking at this ryujin o katana. Good length, seems to be pretty good fitting/construction. And able to choose color and tsuba is cool

I was told anything over 2.55-2.6 shaku (30.5-31") was an o-katana. 2.6 is usually the longest most companies or makers make.

I've kinda come to the conclusion that the term "O-katana" is kind of a nebulous term and perhaps even just one for marketing as well. There has been a GREAT deal of conversation over that very point.

its funny how theres people that talk shit about ronin katanas lol but them idiots dont habe any clue at how much of a beast ronin blades are and the ronin O katanas are the most aggressive geometries on the face of the planet . they are true battle katanas . them O katanas will destroy whatever gets in its way . they got longer blades then what im looking for but they are truely a beast of a katana . they need to make their O katanas with full wrap samegawa and that will make the tsuka much stronger . the only reason why it didnt cut that big box like it shouldve is because the edge geomotry aint right . and thats most likely because it couldve had a secondary bevel . once I reprofiled my dojo pro 13 that katana is vicous

The interesting thing is ... I LOVE MY MODEL 13!! Like I showed in the video ... the build was the typical kick ass RK build. I think the design was poorly done ... as are alot of 'O' Katanas. I have one O that is really balance nicely. Its a Ryujin and it has a 14" tsuka AND has a bohi. The combination of those two design characteristics made for a nicely balance O katana. This is a case of going for a market before thinking about a good design ... even though the construction is the solid build RK is known for.
@mr.excalibur1455
@mr.excalibur1455 4 года назад
On another note ... when I got my model 13 ... didn't need any sharpening whatsoever ... in fact its still cuts like a fuckin laser beam. Its actually one of the things I REALLY like about RK models both the katanas AND the Euro models ... they have a great sharp single beveled grind that cuts great right out of the box.

@@santanajackson6160 Tsuka on my model 14 (sorry ... I know I referenced it earlier calling it 13 ... opps!) is 12" exactly. The tsuka on the model 9 O katana was the same length ... thus my issue with the design.

You mention swords & how they can be fragile in ways. I think many forget this because srlteel=strong & Hollywood movies do things with swords that are not realistic. In truth swords are meant to primarily cut meat & possibly bone (depending on the sword). If someone hasn't cut on pig parts or a deer carcass one won't fully realize how efficient swords are at cutting meat & bone. And while swords in history certainly cut into wood shields & sometimes would hit metal armor, this was not their purpose. Hitting hard objects with swords can blunt, roll or chip edges or even break blades. Warriors of old knew this, we in modern times should remember this too when cutting things swords were not made to do.
@mr.excalibur1455
@mr.excalibur1455 2 года назад
Amen to that. Swords are not axes ... not even close. They are extremely fine tuned instruments meant to cut down a human being ... not plow through a car or cinder block ... thank you Highlander!!
@asa-punkatsouthvinland7145
@asa-punkatsouthvinland7145 2 года назад
@@mr.excalibur1455 right! As much as I lived the Origional Highlander & the tv series they certainly were not realistic. Sure we could say immortal power in the sword blah blah .. but still people expect what they see with swords. Odd as most don't drive their cars like movies show, nor expect a car to be able to...but swords sure 😂 As far as cars a sword is in a way more like a finely tuned race car compaired to the axes station wagon or pick up truck. Race cars do one thing well for usually for a short time (swords may last generations but they are not daily use tools)...a SW or PuT are workhorses that get beat up, run ragged & expected to do so for years.

Someone needs to send this video to all them guys out there that always say katanas are cheap junk and European swords are a lot better , heh I had a few European swords and I can tell you that my 2 katanas out lived them hands down and one of the European sword was around$500. And it would not stay sharp and would become loos . Oh I even take my katana with me hunting and I would cut up my deer with ezz and it's still going strong today, I just cut a ham in two for my neighbor he was very impressed just how fast I did it 😅 , I used a musashi katana and a cold steel katana I love them .
@mr.excalibur1455
@mr.excalibur1455 3 года назад
WOW! Cool ... gotta say though ... I AM one of those guys who prefers European swords. I think that market has REALLY come along way over the last couple of years. There are now quite a few well make European swords that I think you'd have a tough time making come lose. But I will agree that katanas because of that one little mikugi (sp?) pin are more easily maintained.
