I feel no shame in admitting that when he says "to be flanked on either side by my two best friends" and his voice cracks, I got a bit teary. So touching.
Totally agree such a truly humble, gentle, and quiet truly funny man. With an amazing sense of humour. Qualities as you say are sadly lacking in many 'celebrities' today
As brilliant in so many ways others are such as Sid James, Barry Cryer and so many others, I do think that the finest character we have been so lucky to witness and enjoy is one Norman Stanley Fletcher, just utterly hilarious.
Such a genius, the only man I know ever to have written every thing he starred in on his own without the production team or anyone knowing it, he would write it and post it in as anonymous, only at the end of his career in each staring role, would he stand up and say now for the person who wrote the script, oh yes, as they say you must look in the mirror, it was me. Nobody would believe him but later it became evident, he knew every sty;e of comedy and now the only 2 classics we have left are David Jason and Dennis Watermann well not comedy but a legend who played with the O.G of none comedy roles in British history, namely George 'Arthur Daley' Cole.
I met Peter Vaughan a long time ago when I was working for York Hospital Radio (I was about 16) and he was in a superb production of An Inspector Calls at York Theatre Royal, which we were broadcasting. We were invited to the Green Room for a drink, and I remember us watching the highlights of an England-Switzerland match together on the telly, Strange the things you remember. All I wanted to say was that you couldn't hope to meet a nicer, more down-to-earth bloke
JUST MISSING ONE GUY... RICHARD BECKINSALE... WHAT A QUARTET THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN RIP TO ALL OF THOSE LEGENDS THAT HAVE PASSED ON... IF HEAVEN HAS A COMEDY CLUB I HOPE I GET AN INVITATION
I was only 11 in 1979 when I heard on the news about Richard Beckinsale passing away. I just couldn't believe it because he was only 31 at the time. He'd literally just finished making the Porridge feature film with Ronnie Barker. Some months later, at an awards ceremony, Ronnie Barker won an award & the 1st thing he did was pay tribute to Richard Beckinsale. He could barely finish his speech because he was so devastated at him passing away at such a young age
Dennis Waterman Carter and Minder Terry to Arthur Daley aka George Cole the greatest British actor ever in my view, who else had a 72 year career in Acting alone.
The way David Jason looks at Ronnie Barker is PURE admiration, pride and love for his friend. Get yourself a friend who looks at you like that, and you'll never be alone.
DJ doesn't take his eyes off RB the whole time. He knows just what greatness he is in the presence of, how privileged he is to be there and, more poignantly, that the great man was coming toward the end of his life. Such reverance, respect and love. I've clocked up at least a dozen of the 47,000 views so far, and it still gives me goosebumps. The adulation from the public goes without saying, but the adulation from his peers is truly something special. What luck indeed but not for him - for us.
Just one of a kind. We'll never have another one like him. So incredibly moving to see him choke up because his two best friends were with him. Humility is such an endearing quality.
didn't think Ronnie really knew how many people where so inspired by him and loved him . a true legends he and his partner Ronnie are. up there was laurel and Hardy. R.I.P
We cherish Sir David while hes still with us but for me when he goes his death will hit me very hard as his programs have gotten me through many hard times so to you Sir David Jason I will forever be grateful for your prescence on this earth.
watched this about 3 years ago......and yes....flanked either side...tears me up every time.....the biggest tragedy is that no filmmaker has bothered to do a bio pic about Ronnie's extraordinary life on television and making us all laugh our arses off every single time....his comedy is timeless as well as genius...my father was a Geordie and moved out here to NZ as a young man....met my mum and I a result of that....fond memories with my Dad watching Open all Hours and The Two Ronnie's...all those years ago....I cherished my old man as much as "The Governor".....a true comedy genius who is sadly missed...
I’ve seen this at least 10 times and I tear up everytime. I remember watching it when it was aired. I’ve watched so much of Mr Barker’s work, like Porridge, Open All Hours, The Two Ronnies, Seven Of One etc. I started watching them around 2002 when I was 15 and fell in love with them. Totally deserved bafta it was. Love David Jason’s work too
What LUCK to have a British Legend keep our homes and families entertained throughout the years and now we are left with nothing but happy memories and a lifetime of programmes to enjoy - Thanks Ronnie
I am not ashamed to say I cried during this presentation, and the three Ronnies together meeting on this prestigious gathering of their peers. The adoration [figuratively ]of the audience to the Ronnies honoring their work with so much love and appreciation. And the ‘magnificent trio’ in their maturity displaying their own love, affection, and admiration for each other, I hope they have time to spend giving of their genius for many many more years and years to come. God bless them for all the laughter they gave to us all. Lubna Choudhury ( from Bangladesh )
Until recently I thought that they only starred together in Open All Hours , but then found out that one of David's earliest roles was playing the old fella Blanco in Porridge . As an aside I seem to remember Ronnie appearing in a sit com with Nicholas Lyndhurst of Only Fools and Horses and Butterflies fame . My memory could be playing trick with me on that though !
There can be only two words for us, who witnessed and saw his work. "What luck". We were blessed to see his work, I'm 20, but I still watch Open All Hours and Porridge. Why? Because its funny, witty and requires no flammatory material. May you rest in humble peace Ronnie Barker, you are my hero.
I was very lucky to have been brought up watching this great man in Open All Hours, Porridge and of course The Two Ronnies. The words legend and genius are often over used I feel but in Ronnie B's case is totally justified. RIP Ronnie!
I'm only 28 but i was brought up on reruns with the likes of the two ronnies with my late nan and watched open all hours and porridge with my late dad. Ronnie Barker was pure gold, everything he done was the best and the stuff he came up with was just amazing. We will never get writing calibre like him ever again. The only thing i'm annoyed about is the fact i was not around when it was all going out for the first time, i missed out on a lot of great TV.
Very nicely said. From someone who did see it first time round, (I'm 67) it was more than just the comedy itself, it was that connection with our Grandparents (or parent in my case) too, that made them such unforgettable memories. You're very young to have lost your Dad, I'm sorry to hear that, though I'm glad you have those precious memories, because they will stay with you forever & bring you wonderful comfort. Take care 😌
What an absolutely wonderful and moving clip of the late Ronnie Barker. It was sad to see that Ronnie's health was obviously failing. Yet, he still had his sparkling wit. The world needs more The Two Ronnies. Thanks Ronnie for all the laughter and love.
intelligent, wordsmith, great character actor and of course comedy legend ,Arkwright and fletch are two of the best comedy creations there's ever been, rip Mr barker
Sometimes, the following words are said maybe too quickly and perhaps without realising the significance of them. But you know something - "There Really Will Never Be Another Ronnie Barker". Such a genius yet so humble. An example to us all. "What Luck" .... that we were able to be entertained by the many talents and many guises of the great Ronnie Barker. RIP.
A very moving tribute, I confess I have a lump in my throat when he says "..flanked on either side, by my two best friends", and you can see the true bond and friendship between the 3 men.
Not too long, not too short, remembered everyone he had to, linked them all together perfectly, kept it funny and made it moving............ If Carlsberg did accceptance speeches . . .
I know right .wat it is about the old stuff that makes this new crap today so shit .3 legends there that never had to swear or anything t Like that to get a laugh they were just really funny .i think in todays world ppl are just trying to hard to be funny
Another thing Tommy is if you watch any of Ronnie's shows like Porridge , Open All Hours and the Two Ronnies Show they were all extremely funny with lines delivered with great timing . I am not a prude , but the whole family could watch these shows and laugh at them and obviously there was a lot of innuendo and double entendres , but no bad language or deliberate offence .!
No one in the modern era can hold a candle to the bright flame that these three gave to the comedy world. Such a beautiful speech.GGGGranville learnt so much from old man Arkwright. LOL. Thanks for the memories gents.
I teared up when I watched that on the night, and I teared up when I watched that again now. Such a wonderful talent, and such a wonderful man. RIP Ronnie Barker, we miss you.
3 great legends all on the same stage and as tommy britton has allready said no one else comes close how very true and what great comments there. ill allways cherish the great laughs with little ron and big ron and every time i see them on here the great memories come flodding back. they say the worlds a stage and believe you me these legends here the stage was their home. and of cause david jason here as well what a moveing tribute from david and little ron here i was in tears. and thx to the uploader for this great job.
I love this video. Barker was always the actor on TV. He always played different characters. This is the only video were I saw the real person. The real Ronnie Barker. He was a sweet and kind man.
This makes me cry, bless him. Three of THE BEST of British comedy!! You can truly see the love they feel for each other. What fantastic talent. My childhood was fond memories of The Two Ronnies and Only Fools.
This was so moving. The word "great" is so overused these days but Ronnie Barker truly was. I don't think there was a comedy role that he couldn't play. He is right up there with the best that this country has produced. A comedy genius if ever there was one. If I had to name one entertainer who should have been knighted,he would be the one. I doubt we will ever see his like again. One of the all time greats and a true gentleman. A comedy legend. RIP Ronnie.
What a legend :) One of the funniest I've seen in my lifetime and yeah I choked up a bit at the end too. I think all three of them realized he was quite poorly at the time and new it was a special moment for all of them x
What a wonderful person! Humble, funny and greatfull to those who allowed/ gave him the chance! And recognised those who helped him get there. RIP!. Niff said.
This speech is the best ever acceptance. Definitely bought lots of emotion and tears, I don't know him, just goes to show that a truly genuine person can have profound effect. I have the dvd box set of the 2 ronnies, absolutely brilliant English writing and humour.Sadly no more gems left in this world.
Here here Syrahrose! Apart from quite possibly being the greatest all round comic genius the world has ever seen; Ronnie was also a real gentleman and very humble about his achievements. A wonderful man who left us with so many gems. RIP Ronnie, sadly missed by millions.
