Most people don't know that this was the first video by a country artist to ever get played on MTV. This was a groundbreaking achievement in Milsap's career and unfortunately it flopped on the charts. This song proves what a flawless rock singer Ronnie Milsap is and should've been a big hit on rock radio in 84. Sadly, the "country" label has kept too many music fans from realizing just how versatile Ronnie is. This man can sing everything from hardcore country to pop ballads to R&B to classical music to pure 80's rock like this. One of the most underappreciated singers on the planet whose remarkable musical diversity has never received the widespread recognition it deserves.
Great comment. Would have never guessed he was a country singer. Came here for Mariska (so glad) but the song is playing well in my head. Sometimes you have to trust the fanbase, they were the ones who got him notoriety. Still a fun song.
I remember in the 1980's when Ronnie Milsap's songs had more of a light rock/pop sound to them, yet they were played as country. I had to ask myself "is this really country?" Don't get me wrong I still like Ronnie Milsap, but this song and a few others (Stranger In My House, Prisoner Of The Highway) should've been classified more as light rock.
This was the most expensive video we made for RCA, Nashville. Came in on a budget of 125K. Had a blast making it, I’m actually in the black vette going down pacific coast highway in Malibu. Brings back great memories. Directed by David Hogan….Produced by a 25 year old me.
Herv’e Villechaize is the gas station attendant (Fantasy Island) Britt Ekland is in a driving shot (James Bond girl) John Doe and Exene are driving by in a car (the punk band “X”) Of course a very young Marisa Hargitay and an awesome Ronnie Milsap.
Incredible video. The summer of 1984 I was fresh out of High School. MTV played the hell out of this video that summer. 1984 was my endless summer, discovering myself, the world, love...this song would be on the soundtrack of my life. Thank you for your part in it.
Ahhhhh.......1984. When life was less complicated, Mariska was under 21, and first gen Vettes were under 20 grand. Although those days are long gone (forever), Mariska (and first gen Vettes) are still gorgeous!!!
1977 I was 17 years old I met Mr Milsap I worked at Hertz rent a car and I was asked to drive him across the field to his private airplane one of the nicest man I've ever met so genuine
OMG!!! I have loved this video since it first came out & I am just NOW finding out the hot chick was Mariska Hargitay!!! I knew the guy was Scott McGinnis but never knew that was Mariska! I was familiar with her acting back then (she was in a silly 80s movie where she was a party girl but I can't recall the name & she also was the gal Jerry wanted as Elaine for his pilot but George didn't like her since she made a crack about all the bald guys waiting to audition for his part) but never knew this was her! What a hottie she was back in the day!
I was a senior in H.S in 1984 listened to mostly rock and new wave, but knew Ronnie's county hits very well. It totally blew my mind and could not believe he made a song like this the first time I saw this video in 84.
The guys wore mullets, skinny ties, Miami Vice suit jackets and cool sunglasses. I could not and would not sport a mullet because I was in the Army in 1984 And the ladies, teased hair and pantyhose! Almost wish I could go back.
Where to begin... 1. Mariska Hargitay, in the pre-Detective Benson days. Wow! 2. A wildly unexpected and wonderful cameo by John Doe and Exene from X!! Holy crap!! 3. As a child of the 80s, please allow me to declare this to be one of the most hilariously and painfully 80s videos I've ever seen. Takes me right back to my childhood! The Bottom Line: The song? Meh. Not awful. The video? Brilliant!
After all of the times that I watched this video on MTV, it's amazing to think that the brunette in the video would become one of the biggest stars ever. I think it would be something her mother would have loved And who knows if Jayne Mansfield were alive today and Young maybe she would be in music videos too or doing television herself.
Thanks for your love and support towards me on my page I really appreciate you and can’t thank you enough. Write me with the address above to be among the lucky few who stand a chance for a meet and greet when I am in your city or city nearby 🇺🇸💕💞❣💓💗💘💗💗💗💗💗💗
I started working in radio when I was 16 at the country station in my small west Tn. hometown in 1984. This is the first song I ever played. Soft spot for it to this day.
@@davidhouston414 ….. Oh, I was in Union City for like a billion times. Every week went to Pickles Records, owned and operated by Robert Olive, to buy bunches of records. Then went to the Shenanigans Club on the weekend. I’m from nearby Dresden, TN, a much MUCH smaller town. Actually, Union City was the biggest town around. You had to go to Jackson, Paris or Dyersburg to get bigger, and I’m not so sure Paris and Dyersburg were that much bigger.
Ronnie was out of his head when he wrote stuff like this, and the unfortunate result of being painted into the country corner is it didn't go over with country fans nor rock fans. With the right marketing, and a sustained effort with this kind of writing and production, he should have given all the 80's pop/rock/electronica artists, including The Cars, Gary Numan, Human League, et. al. a serious run for their money. Unbelievable to me how well this song has aged. Ronnie is a genius.
Yes. What's amazing is how no other country singer of 1984 could have pulled off a song like this, but Ronnie's amazing musical diversity shines thru as he belts this song as well as any rock vocalist could. Sadly, the country label kept this record from being the Top 40 smash it was meant to be. This would've been a hit for any rock artist on MTV at the time. Ronnie is simply the most versatile singer since Linda Ronstadt.
for me the song is very good, but it was not written by ronnie but by Bobby Caldwell with Roy Freeland and Billy la bounty, and it appeared a year before on Bobby Caldwell's album "august moon".
This is the most 80's video ever. Breakdancing, Max-Headroom knockoff, unknown model who later became a famous actress; Tatoo cameo, D-list actor who later starred in an early Will Smith movie, guitar solo while riding in a convertible, and a beach scene.
Anyone else see the bar tender who was slipping the cash register at the Double Deuce in Road House playing the guitar in the convertible @ 2:53? Jon Dough.

Wow. So I came here for Mariska Hargitay, but is this all a bizarro encapsulation of the 80s, or what?!? Lots of other celebrity cameos in this video (there's a great little article about it from 2009 on PopDose.com), but I had to do a double-take in the middle of the video seeing John Doe and a blond Exene Cerrvenka, from the punkabilly band X, driving past, (John is the one who performs the guitar solo before falling into the back seat of the moving car). Whoa. Incredibly kitschy all of it, what a great relic!
I read a news article today about Ronnie and this video. I had to check it out. I don’t remember this at all from then but I didn’t have MTV…. I’m a car nut so this is a new favorite song and a great video too.
Mariska hargitay is like 18 in this and she still looks exactly the same in 2018. Up till now I thought she was like 35 and my dad just told me that's she is over the age of 50 and showed me this...WHUT

One of your better songs you had out. I still love this one today. Keep on singing brother from Stormin' Norman of the Nashville Musicians Association.
