In this video I look at the components of a typical roof. Ridge, Rafters Hips, Valleys, Purlins, struts and Strutting Beams all go into the make up of most roofs. This video shows you where they are in the roof and how to reconise them. I have also included links to other videos that i have on the major components.

Cheers for this, I have been researching "what type of wood is used for roof trusses?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Beybigail Nonpareil Breakthrough - (just google it ) ? It is a smashing one of a kind product for discovering how to create better sheds and improve your woodworking without the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my brother in law got excellent results with it.

I’ve never heard of a jack rafter. I am new to roofing and I’m in the process of getting my roofing license. I have the booklet for the class and on the diagram it shows hip jack and hip rafter, doesn’t state anything about jack rafters. At first I was wondering if it was different terminology because we are in different locations but everything else you said was on point. New to the channel and Fs gonna look more into it🤟🏾💯

Hi Mate, 'Jack' is a term used in Australian Construction terminology for a member that is shorter than the standard or common member. www.constructiondictionary.com.au/term/jack-rafter Hope this helps

Request: Great series of videos, would you be interested in doing something on construction of dormers. Its quite difficult to find good materials on the net, especially re: Australian construction. I want to construct a 'wall' dormer with double doors leading to a balcony area.
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 6 лет назад
Hi Andre, yeah not a bad idea I have actually started to work on that in the past and might go back and have a look at it again, however, it won't be a quick process, I already have videos stacked up until June and am working on a few more already.
@andrestevenson6045
@andrestevenson6045 6 лет назад
Thats great news. I look forward to eventually seeing it. Not sure whether you will be able to include example wrapping and flashing for a dormer colorbond roof. Its another aspect that I think there are no sources for the Australian code.

What was the terminology for the house for The Unbroken hip roof wear the Gable rafters are broken? Does that makes them creepers since they're breaking into the unbroken hip and into the Gable Ridge?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 5 лет назад
Hi Mate is that cut into the Hip or the Valley if they are cut into the Valley they are called a Valley Creeper otherwise the only other name that might apply would be a Cripple Creeper. Hope this helps

How long does it take to replace an old rotting roof (iron roof, ridge, the whole component etc)? My house structure/roof type is a broken hip and valley
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 4 года назад
Hi Della, that is a very open ended question. It will depend on the size of the roof, how well it is constructed and how much rot is there. Basically it would be a full pull down and then rebuild. I guess on an average size house it would be a day or 2 to pull down and then 4-5 days to reconstruct with putting the iron, flashings and guttering etc on. Hope this helps.

Dear lord! At 1:28 I nearly lost it with “rafters always run at 90deg to external walls”. I was looking at that vertical plan and wondering how the heck I was not seeing 90deg- also knowing that the pitch varies by architect specs. - then upon seeing plot view it became clear. Phew 😅 time/space warp narrowly averted.

i always thought that purlins are between the actual roofing and the roofing framing system (Rafter or Truss)?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 6 лет назад
Hi Ilyn, on a traditional pitched roof the Purlins are used to support the rafters. however, on an industrial type shed construction the Purlins do span from the truss, or rafter to truss or rafters, acting more like a batten to support the roof material.
@Brandon-no3vc
@Brandon-no3vc Год назад
So that broken hip and valley rafter holds each other there?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum Год назад
Hi Mate, the hip and the valleys really only serve as a connection point for the rafters and are supported by the rafters.

@Buildsum
@Buildsum 4 года назад
Hi Lawerence, I haven't come across that Abreveation before, Is it refering to a truss or a part of the truss or roof? I could be for a connection between two trusses but cant be sure.
@hbar057
@hbar057 2 года назад
Hey mate. Does a strut going dowm to a wall plate make the wall underneath load bearing? And so to remove the wall, you need to add a beam to transfer the load from the strut to the edge walls?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 2 года назад
Hi Mate, you are 100% correct, a strut sitting on a wall does make it load bearing and you would have to install a beam to take that load if you want to remove that wall.

hi Buildsum, still loving your content i've learned heaps !! wondering if you could help me out, iv'e got an old school ready reckoner and it says the 'jack edge cut' is 37.5 degrees on a 40 degree roof, i cant picture this ? surely it would be 45 ?
@Buildsum
@Buildsum 5 лет назад
Hi Jordan, this is where it can get confusing, if you wanted to cut the angle by hand you would need to mark a 37.5 degree angle on the timber however if you are going to cut it with a power saw or mitre saw you just set them to 45 degrees and cut along the plumb cut then If you then measure the angle on the timber it will be 37.5 degrees. Sounds weird but trust me it works. Hope this helps.
